Well, it’s still early, so you can give it a little time.

Not until reading this thread and this story did it even occur to me that “smear the queer” involved a slur. We certainly didn’t think of the guy with the ball as a gay dude when we played it.

Exactly

The one that actually makes more sense is that you yell peter on a short punt so nobody touches it. Nobody wants to touch a peter.

I don’t think so but I am in a bizarro world where posters here think homophobic is a good description of what Bijan said.

The term (as it was used) is a homophobic pejorative. No one is saying that Bijan is. I'm not sure why that is so confusing. He apologized because of the accidental slight.

wasn't Peter a pumpkin eater?

Yeah, and a piper.
He was good at multitasking, as the pumpkins and pickled peppers could attest.

I never thought of "smear the queer" as "slay the gay..."

Is that what this is about?

Look, we are dumb boys. "Tackle the man with the ball" just didn't flow off the tongue quite correctly.

We apologize for not knowing we were making fun of gays... (if that is what this is about.)

I should probably preemptively apologize again, because I'll probably say it again. I won't be on TV, so nobody will care, but I'm gonna go ahead and apologize.

But still..... Y'all some hoes.

Queer hasn't always meant gay it's always meant queer it's an actual word with a definition.
Just because it was coopted by a group to self describe doesn't mean it's a slur in every context.

No kidding. They took the damn rainbow too.

Don't apologize as apparently you'll upset people. That is what this is about. People being mad that he apologized.

It's just a silly name of a dumb game that rhymes and is catchy. But if you really think about it, wouldn't willfully participating in the "smearing" of the "queer" also be gay?

Shit, it might be something they’re in to.

I'm not sure what the God stuff has to do with him maybe being gay. Plenty of gay Christians or gay guys that grew up Christian and didn't have a problem with it. Protestants especially don't really persecute the gays anymore.
I've thought that he might be gay for awhile now, though.

Wait, you think Bijan might be gay, or one of the posters above?

I like how two posters said they think Bijan is gay and y'all are still tied up in the "Smear the Queer" debate.

This site is 1 of 1.

This is very funny tbh. For my part, I have no opinion whether Bijan is gay or not. It’s possible I guess? To suggest he could be isn’t offensive to me.

Posters saying he’s weak for apologizing for saying something that could be hurtful to a group of people? Fuck that.

Enticement to pick up the ball?  Be the toughest MFer - if only for a moment - in the game.

It helped with kid toughness pecking order and, to a lesser extent, kid smarts pecking order.

I was horrible at it and got crushed all the time, but it was fun as hell.

For any of you that think saying "queer" is no big deal, can y'all please start using that term around your office and then report back on what happens?

Anyone who still works in an office is queer.

I'm queer. I played smear the queer. I don't recall knowing what it meant as a kid. Bijan goofed in saying it, but it was innocent and good on him for the quick apology. He's welcome to smear me as penance.

Just to make sure I’m not totally ignorant here, we’re talking about wall-ball, right? Even 20 years ago it was half the time called smear the queer but I would agree that as a 5th grader or whatever, it was never thought of in the way that we as adults would think of it now.

Good for Bijan protecting his brand, and of course we (or most of us) don’t talk this way as adults, but geez what a non story.

also I grew up in rural east Texas so YMMV

Nah its basically unstructured rugby where one kid has the ball and everyone else tries to tackle him until he fumbles and somebody else gets to be the queer

Wall-ball is different from tackle the man with the football, which is different from buck buck

I guess STQ in its fully developed form hadn’t made its way to east Texas by then, because i definitely remember that being the playground name for wall-ball, but the point still stands. That was never a game we played during football practice but maybe we wee just way behind all the Dallas/austin/houston enlightened kids.

You’re referring to all the outrage about the apology right?

It just rhymed. That’s why I thought we said it

When we started playing this and calling it stq in our neighborhood around d the time I turned 6 or 7 we didn't even know what "gay" was.  But i understand why it's frowned upon now.  I definitely don't think Bijan had any ill intent but it would be a stupid hill to die on.

Same for us as kids. Needs a better name but “Tackle the Guy With the Ball” doesn’t exactly roll out.
