Have fun solving this Surly... 😁

Big 12 ChampIonship Game Qualifier Tiebreaker Procedures

Tiebreaker Procedures

Effective July 2017
Conference Competition.  All teams will be scheduled to play nine games as part of the Conference schedule competing in a round-robin format.

Championship Game Participants. The two teams that complete the regular season with the highest winning percentage(s) will be the representatives in the Conference Championship Game.  The team that wins the championship game will be the Big 12 Champion.

Tiebreaker Procedure. If two teams are tied for first place both teams will participate in the championship game and the winner of the head-to-head will be the #1 seed.  If more than two teams tie for first place, the tiebreaker procedures below will be applied separately, to identify each participant in the championship game.

In the event two (or more teams) tie for second or any subsequent position, the tiebreaker procedures below will be used to break all ties as necessary.  For the avoidance of doubt, only Conference records will be used throughout the process:
a.    If two teams are tied, the winner of the regular-season game between the two tied teams shall prevail.
b.    If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 4 will be followed until a determination is made.  If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the regular season game between the two tied teams shall prevail.
     1.    The Conference records of the three or more teams will be compared against each other in a “mini round-robin” format.
     2.    The Conference records of the three or more teams will be compared against the remaining team(s) in the Conference
            standings from top to bottom.
            a. When comparing against the remaining teams in the Conference standings any two-way ties will be broken by head-to-head
            competition before the comparison begins.
            b. If more than a two-way tie exists amongst the remaining teams in the Conference standings, the record against the collective
tied teams as a group will be used.
     3.    Scoring differential among the tied teams. The team or teams with the lowest difference between points scored and points
allowed in games vs. the tied teams is eliminated from consideration.
     4.    Draw (In the event steps 1-3 cannot break a multi-team tie the prevailing team or teams will be determined by draw at the
            Conference office).
In the event tiebreaking procedures are unsuccessful and a draw is necessary in determining any portion of seeding,
the following procedures will be used:
            a. The draw will be conducted in public or with media attendance.
            b. Institutions involved in the drawing have the right to have a local representative in attendance at the drawing.
            c. A single slip of paper for each institution (with name or logo) will be placed in a container and will be drawn in order
of seeding from highest to lowest.

In the event that scheduled regular season contests cannot be played as originally scheduled, every effort shall be made to reschedule such a contest at the earliest possible date, provided that such rescheduling does not interfere with classes, examination periods, NCAA rules, or other sports prohibitions. If contests cannot be rescheduled and in the event of a first-place tie, the Conference tiebreaker system will be utilized to determine championship game participants or a Conference Champion.

Unbalanced Tie-Break Procedures to Determine Conference Championship Game Participants

In order for teams to be considered in a tie-break scenario to compete in the Big 12 Football Championship Game, teams must play no less than one fewer conference games than the average number of conference games played by all conference teams (rounded up/down at .50). For example, if the average number of conference games played in the 2020 season is 8.25 (value of 8 when rounded down) a team would be eligible to play in the Championship Game if that team played 7 conference games.

The Championship Game participants will be determined by the best winning percentages within the conference. In the event of an unbalanced schedule where there is a tie for the best, or second best, record in the loss column, head-to-head results will take precedence over winning percentage as long as the required number of conference games were completed. If the teams remain tied, the following procedures will be applied to determine the Big 12 Championship Game representatives:

Two-Team Tie.
1.   Record against the next highest placed team in the conference standings (Based on winning percentage in all games played within the conference), proceeding down the standings.  Two-way win percentage ties down the standings will be broken by head-to-head results.  Absent head-to-head results or if more than two teams are tied in the standings with the same win percentages, results against those teams will be considered collectively.
2.   Record in common conference games.
3.   Cumulative winning percentage of each tied team’s conference opponents.
4.   Highest ranking by the CFP Poll following the last weekend of regular-season games.
5.   Draw.

In the event tiebreaking procedures are unsuccessful and a draw is necessary in determining
any portion of seeding, the following procedures will be used:

The draw will be conducted virtually, in public or with media attendance.

Institutions involved in the drawing have the right to participate virtually or have a local representative in attendance at the drawing.

A single slip of paper for each institution (with name or logo) will be placed in a container and will be drawn in order of seeding from highest to lowest.

Multiple-Team Ties.
The following procedures will only be used to eliminate all but two teams, at which point the two-team tie-breaking procedure will be applied.
1.   Head-to-head (best record in games among the tied teams).
3.   Record in common conference games.
4.   Cumulative winning percentage of each tied team’s conference opponents.
5.   Highest ranking by the CFP Poll following the last weekend of regular-season games.

Example 1
(Average number of conference games played is 8.25 (rounded down to 8), thus teams must have played at least 7 conference games to be considered as a Championship Game participant.)

Team A: 8-0 (Championship Game participant)
Team B: 7-1 (loss to team C)
Team C 6-1 (win over Team B)

Teams B and C have both played the required number of conference games in this scenario (7).

Team C has the same number of losses as Team B and has a win over Team B.

Team C would be the second participant in the Championship Game due to the head-to-head win over Team B.

Example 2
(Average number of conference games played is 8.25 (rounded down to 8), thus teams must have played at least 7 conference games to be considered as a Championship Game participant.)

Team A: 7-0 (Championship Game participant)
Team B: 6-2 (loss to team C)
Team C 4-2 (win over Team B)

Team C has not played the required number of conference games (7), thus would not be eligible to participate in the Championship Game despite the same number of losses and a win over Team B.

Example 3
(Average number of conference games played is 7.50 (rounded up to 8), thus teams must have played at least 7 conference games to be considered as a Championship Game participant.)
Team A: 8-0 (Championship Game participant)
Team B: 6-2 (loss to team C)
Team C 5-2 (win over Team B)

Teams B and C have both played the required number of conference games in this scenario (7).

Team C has the same number of losses as Team B and has a win over Team B.

Team C would be the second participant in the Championship Game due to the head-to-head win over Team B.

Not sure what happens if:

  • 4-way tie between isu, okie lite, blOU, TEXAS
  • 3-way tie between isu, blOU, TEXAS

In your 4way scenario, Texas plays ou.  OkSt and ISU would be out as they’d be 1-2 against the other teams.  Ou and Texas would be in because they’d be 2-1.

in your 3way scenario, it assumes OkSt loses another game in addition to bedlam.  This scenario is trickier as I think it would be determined by best record against next highest ranked conference team, which would likely be OkSt and Texas/ou would both have beaten them while ISU did not.  So it’s probably Texas ou ccg again.

Martin: How about this, guys? Bart can have it Mondays and Thursdays, Milhouse will get it Tuesdays and Fridays, and yours truly will take it Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Bart: Perfect!
Milhouse: Wait a minute! What about Sundays?
Bart: (suspiciously) Yeah, what about Sundays?
Martin: Well, Sunday possession will be determined by a random number generator. I will take the digits 1 through 3, Milhouse will have 4 through 6, and Bart will have 7 through 9.
Bart: Perfect!
Milhouse: Wait a minute! What about 0?
Bart: (suspiciously) Yeah, what about 0?
Milhouse: Yeah!
Martin: Well, in the unlikely event of a 0, possession will be determined by rock scissors paper competition, best 3 out of 5, how's that?

The Big 12 really backed itself into a corner this year. Doesn’t really matter to us. We win out and we’re in. Unbelievably, we are in the driver’s seat. We would hold the tiebreaker over everyone but ou, who also has 2 conference losses. But, if ISU’s only remaining loss is to Texas, things get messy. ISU would hold the tiebreaker over ou. But OSU would hold the tiebreaker over ISU. If ou wins Bedlam, they would hold the tiebreaker over OSU, but not ISU.

So our opponent would be ou, OSU or ISU. Beating ISU and OSU made the TCU loss irrelevant since they aren’t challenging for a spot.

The tie breaker isn’t hard to apply once the results are in. Currently the top 5 teams all control their own destiny (ISU, OSU, OU, UT, KSU). Here’s a breakdown from DMN.

Thanks...

Just not sure about a 3-way tie situation with isu/blOU/TEXAS.  (Assumes TEXAS and blOU win out, and isu's only remaining loss would be to TEXAS).  May end up as some margin of victory between the 3 team's right?

So in this scenario, does TEXAS need to win by at least 8pts vs isu??

  • isu beat blOU by 7pts        (37-30)
  • blOU beat TEXAS by 8pts      (53-45)

No I think it depends on who ends up 4th, 5th, and sixth, etc. so if OSU is 4th, ISU is knocked out because you and OU beat us and ISU lost to us (again this is assuming OU wins out including Bedlam). So you and OU play in the championship game. If KSU is 4th it’ll depend on the ISU-KSU game still to be played amd beyond that you may have to see who places 5th, etc. it’s almost impossible to get to the score differential. The odds of all three having identical records against all of the other teams in order is astronomically low.

In that scenario Oklahoma State is likely involved in a four way tie at two losses bc they’re almost certainly not losing again after they play OU. Then it’d go to Texas and OU via 2-1 records in that group.

As it says in the link you quoted, in a three way tie, it is head to head in the triangle. After that it’s h2h vs #4, 5, and so on until someone wins, then resets at h2h vs the remaining two. Your scenario requires ISU to beat K State so OSU is basically locked into 4th even if they drop a random game somewhere. The language is wired but as I read it, in that scenario, OU and Texas beat OSU while ISU didn’t. So it would be Texas and OU. If it somehow ended up with KSU at 4th, OU would get the short straw.

But the most important thing to remember here is lol at Texas winning out.

There's no excuse why Okie State can't beat OU this year. It might be us(if we win out) vs Okie state in a rematch.

Did any of you actually read the entire OP? Come on....be honest.

No, but I’ll explain why.

We do this every fucking year only to lose to some slap dick team with less talent when it did matter (past tense) or when is does matter (present tense).

Let me know when we win the Big 12 because at the rate we’re going right now, I don’t see it happening for at least another half decade.

Other than they always lose to OU, sure. If you hold your breath waiting for Grundy to not Gundy that game, you’ll suffocate.

Also there was no reason Texas shouldn’t have beat OU and they proceeded to get dominated for 3.75 quarters.

I mean, the circumstances really don't matter, we will always lose to OU. But even in your scenario, there are plenty of excuses, mainly injuries on the OL, possible injuries to our two best offensive players (Hubbard and Wallace), and a young oft-injured QB who is still struggling with turnovers and pocket awareness. There is no reason to believe we can win Bedlam this year, even if you ignore the history and its baggage.

It’s happening. You’ve spent so much time here, you’re starting to think and talk like a Texas fan.

If it comforts you at all, at least we do a lot less with more here at Texas.

We're the slap dick team with less talent you need to beat this year, so you're good.

At least there's a rational excuse for losing Bedlam with OU being a blue blood that lands 5 star talent every year.

We're going to lose Farmageddon by less than a TD for the 12th time in 13 years, and I'll bet my left nut that KSU does it with less than 150 yards of total offense.  Right now I'm predicting a 24-21 KSU victory and the following qualifiers:  They will have no offensive TDs, they will have under 150 yards of total offense, we will have (at least) one score taken off the board by the refs, and they will convert at least one 3rd and 15+.

Might have found a scenario where blOU wins out and misses B12 Championship Game....

K-State vs Okie Lite in B12 CCG scenario...

  • K-State        7-2     (losses to Okie Lite and WVU)
  • Okie Lite      7-2     (losses to TEXAS and blOU)
  • Iowa State   7-2    (losses to Okie Lite and K-State)
  • blOU              7-2    (losses to K-State and Iowa State)

What sucks is that TEXAS would have to lose to both Iowa State and K-State for this to happen...

It's like we're competing for which fanbase can be the most sadsack of all. OU's fanbase is the trashiest in conference and they have no doubt whatsoever that they'll win the conference yet again.

Go deep dive into the Farmageddon results since Ron Prince was canned.

You really can't make some of that shit up.

I hear you. It's just that we always gift wrap championship appearances to OU. Doesn't matter how we fare against them head-to-head.
