Markets still falling like whoa

Recommended Posts

semiconductors been really rolling over -- about to hit the 200 day moving average (bold white line) -- if anybody wants to take a punt.  industry is in obvious secular growth and short term is heavily undersupply/in-demand.

big bulls can also go long using SOXL which is leveraged.

im all squeezed out of juice tho 🤒

September jobs report misses expectations with just 194,000 new payrolls

Counterpoint:

Quote

The headline jobs number in the September employment report was well below expectations, however employment for the previous two months was revised up significantly.   The participation rate declined, and the unemployment rate decreased to 4.8%.

Leisure and hospitality gained 74 thousand jobs in September.  In March and April of 2020, leisure and hospitality lost 8.2 million jobs, and are now down 1.6 million jobs since February 2020.  So leisure and hospitality has now added back about 80% of the jobs lost in March and April 2020.

Construction employment increased 22 thousand, and manufacturing added 26 thousand jobs.

NOTE: State and Local education lost 161 thousand jobs, seasonally adjusted, versus expectations of a solid gain.  This was a key contributor to the weak job report.

2nd straight month of hard-to-explain large declines in state and local education employment. Suggests BLS having trouble with seasonal adjustment factors and that numbers will be revised higher in subsequent reports.

dont look now but SPX futures are rallying after hours, and just breaking out of the local top from last week (4370).  a ride to 4480 would be nice to end the week

Some of this is teachers (a field dominated by women) who are not returning to the workforce post pandemic. Most of it is bus drivers, cafeteria workers, janitors, etc. who are getting better deals elsewhere or are staying at home.

I know my kid's school is short on drivers

Same here. Signs at literally every school where my kid goes to in VA says now hiring bus drivers.  He said his buses are so packed and the routes have gotten so long he’s just started walking to school 2 miles away.

Any insight into why? Lack of applicants? Lack of qualified applicants? Pay too little? COVID fears?

A lot of people left the profession over the last couple of years. People with enough years to retire chose to do so in larger numbers than usual. It’s always been a hard job in relation to the pay, but it’s gone too far and people are bailing. It’s actually true for administrators as well.

Ah, wasn't thinking that way. So people jetted and having trouble refilling spots. Been hearing that retirements have gone through the roof, along with the oft-mentioned quits.

A lot of teachers walked into new state expectations they weren’t expecting this year and have announced they are retiring in December. Don’t see it getting better for a while because there won’t be enough new grads to replace them.
