Desantis is a POS and needs his own thread

Maybe he didn't want to get in the mess but DeSantis didn't do himself any favors by staying out of the House Speaker drama. Trump did some phone calls that earned him some public gratitude from McCarthy.

Anything could happen but I could see DeSantis falling into the Scott Walker or Jeb Bush trap of thinking the nomination will be easy especially if you do little.

I know there's a very real possibility he could be our next president. But then I sometimes watch him and think no way. The guy is just kind of a dork.

Say what you want about Trump, but he was himself. With DeSantis, it just comes across as he is playing a character to pander.

He has zero charisma. I can't stand Trump but you can at least listen to him talk, for at least a few minutes. My guess is that many of the people polled about supporting DeSantis have not heard him utter a word.

Why would DeSantis weigh in on the House Speaker vote? What did Greg Abbott have to say? What did any other Republican Governor have to say? It doesn’t involve them.

Also, speak for yourself if you can stand listening to Trump speak. Listening to him is like nails on a chalkboard. I’ll usually tune out and wait for a transcript. Looking at him is no picnic either.

If you want to be the leader of a party, you weigh in on solutions.

What the GQP folks outside of Florida know about DeSantis is a few small soundbites, and that he was doing stuff that they believed Trump should have been doing about COVID and vaccines and opening stuff up, and he was doing stuff that Greg Abbott wouldn't do until it was too late.

Now how many are willing to pick him over Trump in a hypothetical primary, hard to say, but there are some GQP folks who are still pissed at Trump over COVID and his bragging about inventing the vaccines at warp speed.

DeSantis kind of has to strike while the iron is hot in '24, because he runs the risk of one or more states flipping blue in '28, or the battleground states that flipped blue for Biden in '20 doubling down on staying blue and increasing the margin.  More importantly, he won't have another Florida gubernatorial win to campaign off of since he's ineligible in '26, and if the Dems flip Florida in '26, that would fucking hurt him pretty bad.

Not to mention that in '28, he would run the risk of a few more high-profile Republicans joining the race, Republicans who have laid their own groundwork.

Do you think that’s what motivates Trump? Do you think Abbott has no aspiration for higher office?

I've been in that office, Capitol elevator doesn't go up any higher.

Oh wait...you meant.

If a Republican wins in 2024, Abbott is going to take a cabinet position or possibly a U.S. Courts of Appeal appointment in 2025.  That's as high as he goes.  I mean, he run through the primary process but that's only to jockey for position for one of those two above spots.  Don't forget, he'll be 67 going on 71 when the next presidential inauguration/cabinet overhaul takes place.  I think we're done seeing 70+yo SCOTUS appoints in our lifetime...too risky.  But CoA or Cabinet?  Certainly.  If were to fade into judicial or administrative obscurity...I think Texas would be better off.........until of course (checks notes)...24 hours later...Dan Patrick assumes the Governorship.  At least he'd get his cruel ass outta the Senate?

You downplay the significance of having our first lesbian governor.

that really would be progressive on our part.

If I was drinking, I was gonna attend the Inaugural Ball but I can't do that sober.  And I wanted to be outside when Dan Patrick walks in and stops for the media photos so I could shout like I was in the press, "Lt. Gov., who are you wearing?"  And no matter what he says, I hold one ear out like I can't hear and just shout, "You say 'Lane Bryant'?  Thank you Mr. Patrick! (scribbles pretend notes)"

DeSantis is doing every thing he can to only appeal to a small group of voters. That may work for the primary where he has limited appeal but not on a national level. I've read he has a terrible personality as well as being a bully. Might work for MAGA, Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, just not sure who else. That doesn't sound like national appeal to me. But, the one thing he has going for him right now is his age.

he’ll quickly crawfish if he wins the primary. Also, 100% he’ll have a moderate as VP

independent trump will easily suck away that radical 15% from desantis

Florida teachers forced to remove or cover up books to avoid felony charges

Quote

School teachers in Florida’s Manatee county are removing books from their classrooms or physically covering them up after a new bill went into effect that prohibited material unless deemed appropriate by a librarian, or “certified media specialist”.

If a teacher is found in violation of these guidelines, they could face felony charges.

The new guidelines for the Florida law, known as HB 1467, outline the books be free of pornographic material, suited to student needs and their ability to comprehend the material, and appropriate for the grade level and age group.

In order to determine if the books meet these guidelines, certified media specialists must undergo an online training developed by Florida’s department of education.

With only a few or even one media specialist present in each school, the process to vet books is lengthy.

Scrutiny of teaching material in Florida schools heightened under the leadership of the rightwing Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, whose administration says it is actively working to “protect parental rights”, which includes a prohibition on childhood education on gender, sexual orientation and critical race theory.

DeSantis has emerged as a legitimate rival to Donald Trump in the Republican party. The former US president has already declared his 2024 candidacy for another White House run, while DeSantis is widely expected to do so later this year.

As part of his appeal to the party’s rightwing base DeSantis has sought to portray himself as a culture war warrior, cracking down on LGBTQ rights and taking conservative stances on the fight against Covid-19 and a host of other issues such as immigration.

In 2021, he announced the Stop Woke (Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees) Act to “give businesses, employees, children and families tools to fight back against woke indoctrination”.

Teachers have condemned the new guidelines.

The Manatee Education Association union president, Pat Barber, told local TV station Fox 13: “We have people who have spent their entire careers building their classroom libraries based on their professional and educational experience and understanding of the age of the children they teach.”

Barber added: “Now, their professional judgment and training are being substituted for the opinion of anyone who wishes to review and challenge the books. We’re focused on things that cause teachers to want to walk away from education because they can’t focus on their mission of educating children.”

Some teachers are even covering up their library books with paper.

Don Falls, a history teacher at Manatee high school, told the Herald-Tribune newspaper: “If you have a lot of books like I do, probably several hundred, it is not practical to run all of them through [the vetting process] so we have to cover them up.”

More school districts in Florida are expected to follow suit as a result of such policies this year. The state’s education department issued a deadline of 1 July 2023 for when “the superintendent of schools in each district must certify to the FDOE Commissioner that all school librarians and media specialists have completed this training”.

Just once I’d like one of these people to show me an example of “pornography” in the classroom or the school library. I assume it’s like with the litter boxes they claim are being used by little children to go to the bathroom in class. They can’t point to anyplace where that’s actually happening. I saw some RWNJ standing at a podium at a school board meeting or something screaming about there being Playboy and Hustler in the school library. Oh bullshit, Karen. Let’s stroll down to the school library and you show us where the Hustler magazines are. How can you be so gullible as to even believe such a thing? Go fucking look for yourself. There’s no way you’re going to find Playboy and Hustler in the school library. (I know, I know...because they’re always all checked out, right?)

Jesus Christ is he a fucking whiner. Can't listen to his bullshit voice even if he weren't lying to the public.

He says "o" like a steh-OH-ner. Or maybe like a Marylander, maybe Philadelphian. Seems like too much of a wuss to have Philly ancestry. Maybe that's why his people fled to Jacksonville. Do people in Jville whine when they talk? I don't remember.

Teachers need to leave Florida in a mass exodus

I wish they would, there's a shortage in a lot of other states that would treat them much better.  But a big problem is that there are a ton of school districts in Florida that are wildly more affordable than much of the rest of the country.  And that's unfortunately probably worth eating a lot of shit over for these educators and staffers.  Yeah, there's some expensive parts and of course the beachfront communities, but most of Florida is $275,000 tract housing and relatively new, clean schools with a decent quality of life.  The problem with Florida is the fucking people in it.
