The worst ghost stories you've ever heard

So, my wife is into all kinds of hoodoo. Loves ghost stories, and believes way too many of them. But she also has an affinity for collecting the really bad, obviously stupidity-induced variety, too. A few exemplars:

Quote

"One day I was passing by the old hospital. I turned and saw a person looking out the window screaming with a knife stuck in her head. I thought it was weird because no one is allowed to go in there."

Quote

"A couple of months ago. While I was sleeping, I don't know why but I woke up suddenly. And when I looked up to the end of the bed a tall, dark figure. He told me get out, so I left. Oh and he was wearing a brown hat."

Quote

"He had on with what I think you would call a French curved mustache. He headed down from the stairs smile at me and run back up the stairs laughing. At this point I know something is seriously wrong with this house."

Quote

"I have seen this creature which looks like gargoyle around the area I live. They say gargoyles scare off evil spirits. I have caught on game cam a few times, and it seems like it had motorcycle vest, and it is creepy looking."

Quote

I saw the devil.
--Billy

I'm sorry, Billy, you're going to have to be more specific. What color hat was he wearing?

Anyway, share 'em if you've got 'em.

The Skirvin Hilton Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. I had a client in OKC and more than one of the employees swear they had ghostly experiences there. One guy said he woke up and somehow shaving cream was all over the bathroom mirror. I’ve heard that NBA teams refuse to stay there.

This one got a hearty laugh from me.

Told from a woman's perspective

My brother and I grew up near an old Native American burial ground. As kids we used to hear stories about Crazy Charlie who was allegedly the ghost haunting the burial ground. One night my brother said we should go out to the graveyard at midnight. Sure enough at midnight we went out there. Under the silver moonlight there was a freshly dug grave. My brother said we should climb in it. I said no way! Suddenly we heard Crazy Charlie coming. My brother panicked and jumped into the grave. He wanted me to jump in but I said no. The grave collapsed on him! As the dirt filled the hole it revealed a tombstone with my brother's name on it! I freaked out. Crazy Charlie was getting closer so I ran into his arms and he comforted me about my brother's death. We later got married and had 3 kids. He now works at the Guitar Center in Plano.

aggy was at a symposium about ghosts.  The keynote speaker, after his presentation wanted to know about the attendees’ real-life experiences with ghosts.

To begin, he asked if any of the attendees had ever actually seen a ghost.  They all raised their hands.

Moving on, the speaker asked if any attending had every spoken with a ghost.  This time only about 50% of the attendees, including aggy, raised their hands.

Pressing further, the speaker asked if any attendees had ever been on a first name basis and ongoing relationship with a ghost.  Only 4 attendees raised their hands; aggy among the four.

Now the speaker asked the million dollar question. Had any attendees ever had sex with a ghost?

aggy was the only one to raise his hand.  The speaker and the other attendees were both shocked and impressed with aggy.  The speaker was intrigued  and engaged aggy further, asking “you, good sir, have actually had sex with a ghost? Tell us about your experience!”

aggy, with a confused look on his face, replied “ghost?  Oh, I thought we were talking about goats.”

At this haunted North Texas house, the ghosts will 'freak' you all night long

The ghosts at this supposedly haunted house in Gainesville reportedly like to talk dirty. They're "sexual," the owner says. "There’s no other way to put it."

GAINESVILLE, Texas — No one would confuse a small house on Denton Street in Gainesville for a moving company. But if you do move in, you haul yourself right back out -- and quick.

“It’s like a revolving door,” said Linda Hill, the home’s owner. “The longest anyone stayed in this house was six months.”

Years ago, Hill and her husband bought several homes in the same neighborhood in order to rent them out. The one on Denton Street was the only one that couldn’t keep a stable tenant.

Hill said she and her husband had no idea why. Then, finally, after 10 tenants moved out in less than two years, someone told her husband the house was haunted.

At first, Hill didn’t believe it.

“No,” she said. “No. Not at all.”

That changed when she happened to take a shower on the property. Through the curtain, she saw then heard a dark figure whisper "Lookin' good!" at her. At first, she assumed it was her husband -- until a few seconds later, when her husband walked in the bathroom.

"He said, 'Who were you talking to?'" Hill recalled. "And it was like, 'Oh my God, it really is haunted.'"

Rumor has it, the house, built in the 1840s, used to be a bordello. That’s why Hill said many of the ghosts here tend to reveal themselves in a particular nature.

“Sexual,” she said. “There’s no other way to put it.”

Hill said several people have recorded EVPs -- electronic voice phenomenon -- where the ghosts can be heard talking dirty in the house.

"'Oh baby, oh baby, yeah,'" Hill said, mimicking what has been heard. "'Yeah, I like it like that.'"

Not all the ghosts here are that way, though. There’s a door in the upstairs bathroom that regularly opens, even after it’s been shut tight.

Oh, and there's also a 19-foot-well underneath the living room. Some people believe it’s a spiritual portal, which they have said may explain how so many different ghosts and spirits have ended up in the house -- and particularly in the room right next door to that well.

"The murder room," Hill said that room is called.

Why that name? Because some psychics claim to have seen a dead man lying on the floor of that room.

No, really: “Almost every psychic that walks in here,” Hill said.

For those reasons, and many more, Hill eventually gave up on finding tenants to lease her property.

Now, she rents the house out exclusively to people who want to investigate the ghosts that reportedly live there.

Gateway to Hell?

My kids' former elementary school was the originally the only high school in town (built in the 1920s).  It is adjacent/connected to and makes use of a 1920s municipal auditorium.  Each year, the older elementary kids do a musical in the auditorium and I was volunteered to help build the elaborate sets (still volunteer some of my Saturdays for this).  Anyway, I've heard some very specific haunting stories from people who have been working in this space a lot longer than I have and are not the type of people to suffer the vapours or make this sort of shit up to fuck with people.  Whatever it was, they experienced something in that old space, which would have caused me, were I there at the time, to make a hasty exit.  Personally, I have been in this auditorium and it's adjacent spaces for years at all hours of the day and night and ain't seen shit.

This is likely a candidate for "worst ghost story", because it's not scary at all, just kind of baffling. It happened to me in Oct 18, 2021.  My wife and I, being retired, take little day trips during the week.  On that Monday we decided to go to McKinney Falls SP.  Had never been there before.

Got a park map and decided to walk to the "upper" falls.  We parked near the restroom. What I figured to be the trail (it was unmarked) made a "Y" as it came up the hill. One branch led to the restroom and the other to the parking lot. As I waited outside the restroom, I could hear someone coming up the trail.  I decided to ask them when they got there if that was the correct trail.

A Woman came into view walking up the hill.  She looked to be mid-30s, slightly pudgy, with brown hair cut in a pageboy style, box shaped face, wearing jeans and a pink polo shirt.

She took the path to the parking lot, and I took a step in her direction.  She went behind a "bush"

.... and disappeared.

Now the bush wasn't leafy; it was mostly stalk about the size of your forearm.  She just went behind it on one side and didn't come out the other.  She didn't leave the trail as she would have been in the bushes, and I would have heard her. She didn't go back down the hill, as I would have seen her.  I looked in the parking lot but there was no one.

When my wife came out, I had her watch me from where I'd stood as I walked the trail where she'd disappeared.  She could always see me; I was never hidden by the bush.

The woman didn't look like any of the "ghosts" you see on the videos claiming to prove ghosts exist. Wasn't a black shadow, or misty transparent. She was as solid as anyone you'd see on the street.

But she just disappeared.

this is my ghost story, which is a conversation I had with my daughter when she was 3 or 4.

Her: Daddy, what is my other mommy's name?

Me: What? Who are you talking about?

Her: I can't remember my other mommy's name.

Me: Other mommy? You only have one mommy and her name is Samantha. You know that.

Her: No, I'm talking about my other mommy. She has long black hair (my wife is blond) and wears long black dresses. I only see her at night when you and mommy are asleep.

Me: Uh, ok, I think you were just dreaming.

Her: No, I see her every night.

Me: Lets go watch Paw Patrol.

Shifting gears here ...

About 5 or 6 years ago, I attended the wedding of the son of a good friend of mine. The event was very nice, wedding held at the Pharmacy Museum. We did the strolling through the French Quarter, on the streets with a police escort. Nice event.

The next night, I had booked a room at the Columns Hotel. The Columns is a beautiful hotel in the Garden District. Originally built in 1883 and restored to its former grandeur. Naturally, rumors about ghosts, hauntings and apparitions since the Columns had gone through some very tough times in the past.  Particularly, Room 10. So naturally, I requested and got, Room 10 for the night.

That room is opulent in an old N'awlins way. Well, my then current lust interest and I walk up the street, watch the Game of Thrones episode that night at the bar and return to the Columns. Rather tepid, uninspiring swapping of bodily fluids. Then sleep.

About 2:00 a.m., I wake up ... a bit. You know when you are in a half awake, half asleep state. But, I become acutely aware of this ice cold sensation slowly going down my arm. And I sense ... I know, I absolutely know, that there is some... presence, right there. The room is dark of course.

But, I slowly lift my head since I hear something in the bathroom... some noise that to this day, I cannot identify for sure. I try to turn my head to look toward the bathroom but it is almost as if a presence is holding my head in place, refusing to let me turn my head. And this fear just permeates every aspect.

I wake up around 6:00 a.m. ... covered in sweat. The sheets are soaked with sweat. And the room is peaceful. When asked, she has no idea at all of the "presence."

Just thinking about it brings reflections of, perhaps some of the feelings that night.

I had an extremely similar experience in an apartment I rented in Houston back in the early/mid 90s.  However, this apartment couldn't have had any spooky history, as it was a brand new complex; I was the initial renter.

My gf and I had gone out on a Saturday night with friends, similar time frames as yours.  Got home, did the dirty and fell asleep/passed out somewhere around 2/3am.

A couple of hours later I kinda woke up as you described.  I sleep on my stomach/side, and my head was facing the left side of my bed, the side my gf was sleeping on.

I immediately felt this evil presence from the other side of the bed, away from where I could see.  By now I was awake and petrified.  I mean, I don't really get scared of anything and I was in a panic to turn around and see what was in my room.  But I couldn't move a muscle; my arms, legs, head...hell everything were all plastered to the bed, like some enormous being was sitting on me.  All I could do was get this guttural scream/noise to come out of my mouth.  I really don't know how long this went on; it felt like minutes but probably just a few seconds.

My groan/scream woke up my girlfriend who turned over and shouted "what's wrong?' and that "woke me up."  All the sudden the presence was gone and I could move freely.  Freaked me the fuck out.

I later read up that I was probably experiencing some kind of sleep paralysis episode.  Still kinda freaks me out, though.

It's fascinating that all ghost encounters are people that died between 1 and 101 years prior.  They only visit middle class people, mostly white...some hispanic.  And mainly in the United States.

Having said that, I got a goofy one that's fun to share out loud after all these years.

When I was about 13 or so, I still couldn't tie a tie.  My dad had moved out 4 years prior and it was just one of those things you learn from an older relative.  I had to wear one to something the next week at school.  Hadn't seen him in months, but grandparents were in town so dad wanted to put on a good appearance in front of them since they didn't believe in divorce.  Dad picks me up to meet them for dinner at this banquet hall, and I wore a dress shirt and crunched a necktie in my pocket.  Before dinner, I ask him to help me so we go to men's room and he's standing behind me walking me through the windsor and double windsor.  Guy with broken arm in sling leaves stall and while washing his hands laboriously says something to the effect of, "How nice, a father teaching his son to knot a proper necktie."  My dad, ever sarcastic with lucky strike dangling out of his mouth says, "Well, he couldn't very well ask you for help with your arm in a sling." Man chuckles and leaves.

15 years later, Dad dies unexpectedly halfway across the country in PA.  They ship his body to Chicago for burial (where we all grew up).  I fly up and stop off at Marshall Field's to buy a black tie for the funeral and the experience reminds me of my late father who I hadn't see in the flesh in years.  Few days later, burial, and reception at this NW Chicago joint that has been our family go-to banquet hall for funerals going back generations.  people start filing in and I'm overwhelmed for a moment since I don't know what to say (everybody was kinda shocked how fast he went).  I retreat to the back, back bathrooms where nobody will be.  I piss, and am slowly combing my hair, getting it together, etc.  A flush, and an older man who wasn't with our group comes out of the stall to the sinks.  I am fixing my tie.  And he is singing an old commercial jingle for alka-seltzer to himself but kinda out loud.  My dad used to sing it at stoplights.  Pop-pop, fizz-fizz, oh what a relief it is.  He's obviously referring to the relief of a dump in this case.  As I fix my tie, I look at him through the mirror, he does not have a broken arm.  But he is missing an arm, his suit sleeve is pinned up as many veteran amputees do.  We nod at one another and I leave as he labors to wash, rinse, and dry his hand.  I'm white as a ghost when I return to the greeting line, wife asks me what's wrong.  I was in shock, didn't say a word.  And nobody walked out behind me.

Years later, I listened to a standup bit on CD or online from John Mulaney (coming from Chicago).  He talked about his girlfriend giving him shit for making up ghost stories in older restaurants in the City with this line, "John, that bathroom has been closed for 40 years.  Whoah.....!"  A few years after that, I met him through a mutual friend after a show.  I couldn't help but tell him the story of my bathroom ghost story and how I didn't tell my wife because she'd say something like his did "closed for 40 years whoah...."  He laughed a bit to be polite.  And I said, "I probably heard you tell it live years ago and the memory of your bit probably planted the idea in my head and I imagined that whole incident out of stress, shock, and booze."  He agreed.  To be polite again, he asked when my father died/when the bathroom ghost thing happened.  I said early 2005.  and to this day, i don't know if he was being sarcastic and fucking with me or he legit had to go to a paid meet 'n greet, but he said, "Couldn't have be me that gave you that idea, I didn't even think of that bit until 2009 or so and recorded it in 2012.  Nice meeting you though."

And that's why you don't go to the bathroom with one-armed men.

Oh, and for the record--that has since stopped.  We never had a mouse or a rat in a trap or anything.  Just stopped with seemingly no explanation.

I first thought this was going to be a sequel to Road to Perdition and you and your dad were mafia hitmen or something.  But after finishing, I think it's some high level joke about bidets and wiping your ass with one hand.

Back in the day, I was staying in a high-rise hotel in NY City and they gave us an actual room key. We were almost at the top floor like 50 stories up and the view was pretty great. We decide to leave our stuff and go out for the day and my friend decided to leave the key at the front desk for safe keeping. The receptionist tells us about the elevator maintenance that was going to happen in the early morning so we needed to get back before 1AM to use the elevators. Well, we go out on the town and forgot. So we get back and then remember when we see we can't use the elevators and we head for the stairs. We are going up the stairs and telling each other whatever stupid spooky stories we remember from childhood and soon we are laughing, and the time is passing pleasantly. We're up near our floor and I'm done telling a story about a black cat and all of a sudden, I hear a gasp and my friend's eyes are big and round as he wheels around to face me. "I've got the scariest story of all! We fucking forgot to get the key from the reception desk!"

These both sound a bit like sleep paralysis. Happens to me occasionally. Especially the part about trying to cry out. Sleep paralysis sucks and is quite scary even when you recognize that it's happening. For some reason it only seems to happen to me if I'm napping during the day and on my back.

I've had it, pretty scary.  But, I've had some pretty vivid enccounters where I'm literally pinching myself to see if I was dreaming.  Presences around my bed, one felt so real I threw my pillow at it.
