Wait, what are you using that 5wt for? You started off talking tarpon. And then you’re waiting on a Scott repair. I need to know what you’re fishing where!

To clarify, I don't catch bass/panfish on the 5wt in central Texas, where I broke my Scott not catching fish, hence the repair and ordering the backup TFO.  I plan to use that to not catch trout in a couple weeks in Salida and Gunnison.  I am pumped because thanks to this thread, I also put together a 3wt fiberglass setup I hope to use to not catch some brook trout in some small alpine creeks.

I guess I could probably successfully not catch tarpon on a 5wt as well, but I have never tried, and if someday I do, I'll probably go ahead and buy some expensive heavyweight saltwater gear to not catch them with.

I think that about sums it up for me.

Got it. Yeah, I have several rods across a full range of weights, for salt and fresh, and a dozen reels and spools all of which I dearly love using to not catch fish.

But I was out there today at dawn and will damn sure be out again tomorrow, greeting the morning with waders and sunglasses on, standing waist deep in some body of water or ‘nother.

I’m in beautiful stunning La Porte for work today and tomorrow. Any tips on spots to freshwater fish for bass/panfish/etc? Not my normal fishing grounds so I’m all ears.

I’m not much on freshwater, but you could probably head up towards equally scenic and beautiful Channelview and fish the Sheldon Reservoir. I think there’s a State Park there.

Be extremely careful about emptying your car before you hit Sheldon.  It’s a great fishery with tons of big ass largemouth, but the parking lots are…not monitored for shitbag thief motherfuckers scum.

Damn, that’s heaven. What were you throwing at them? Assuming dries on the creeks? That’s some mighty still water in the lake for trout!

How many days were you out?

We were throwing a Letort hopper style fly that I tied for the cutts in the lake.

Rio Grande Kings and Sparkle Duns on the small streams.  Size 14-18.

I highly recommend making the trip someday.  It’s quite an undertaking to get to the lakes where they reside.  I’ve learned quite a bit about the Rio Grande Cutthroats from Chris at Living Waters in Round Rock when we lived in Austin.  He has a film they’ve put together that’s on their website and he had a seminar before Covid with the biologist from Colorado Parks & Wildlife.  Colorado Parks & Wildlife put out a lot of information about their restoration efforts (Rio Grande Cutts occupy less than 10% of their historic range due to non-native rainbows cross breeding and browns and brookies which out compete the natives Rios):

We just got to fish Sunday evening and Monday.  Unfortunately didn’t have more time as I had several projects I needed to return to work on.  I could spend all summer up there.

Anyone know if you can wade walter E long lake? Considering going this evening can’t find any info other than boats are good and the fish are at about 10 feet deep.

You have a big ass truck. Pretty easy throw a couple of kayaks in the back and get in just about any water anywhere. Surprised you haves bought any yet. You can put them in the back of that panther wagon too.

Household politics … actually not really she’s a whatever kinda woman as long as I put out. I want a skinny saltwater skiff anyway. Will end up with a yak eventually I’m sure. Going to brushy creek tonight.  But pics of those bass on WEL lake may hasten the purchase. I’m going to need to rent a garage I think. Fuck the haters.

Fishing trip with my son after picking him up in camp.  Rio Grande cutthroats caught last Sunday evening at an extremely isolated lake in southern Colorado.

Yes. Catching huge <INSERT TROUT/CHAR SPECIES HERE> on dries and/or streamers.

On that note, in a week, I'll be chasing the bulls on an extended camping trip. I'm like a kid the night before Christmas--so wound up, I can't think straight or focus on anything else beyond five minutes.

Ironically I fish barbless only now. Ironically because this barbed hook happened …

someone’s line was on the shore and I didn’t realize when it wrapped around my ankle and I pulled on it there was a hook, furk. In my pinkie.

I did pick up a 3 wt set up today though. Ross and TFO, man the TFO action is spectacular at 3 wt.  Caught 10 or so sunfish, 2 small mouth bass. It was a blast on my new rod and reel.

I learned about 20 years ago to never fish without a pair of something that can cut whatever hook you might encounter, out. My last experience was also someone else’s, went through the knuckle in my left thumb.  When I go offshore I upsize to a pair of dykes that weigh about 10#, and have since added a cordless dremel.  I’m never going to go the full day with a hook buried if I can help it. Those little perch hooks have the barbs up top too, oof.
