We know McConnell is a calculating morherfucker, but would anyone here be surprised if she gets folks to turn on Mitch? The irony if his final undoing was at the hands of this lunatic. God help us.

I wouldn't count him out just yet. She has some of the mob on her side, but he's got the money.

In terms of manipulating procedures and politicians, McConnell will squash her from a big pile of asscrust into but a sliver of asscrust.

The guy's an evil bastard, but one of the most effective Senate Majority Leaders in terms of getting what he wants since I don't know when.  She might make some noise on the way down, but he will crush her if he decides to do so.

The electoral college is a form of voter suppression.

It is a form of pure plurality suppression. Which was it’s design by the Founders.

The minute Texas turns blue, Democrats everywhere will defend the EC to the death - and laud the Founder’s genius. As they should.

All this cancer talk. If only-- cancer is quite often treatable.

I'd say MTG is more like a severe form of dementia.

We'll see how this goes. This is the first real post-Trump GOP litmus test. MAGA already hates Mitch, and this statement is going to have them out for blood. Let's see who sides with whom. The old guard (knowing they'll lose Trump's base), or the MAGA trash.

MAGA is costing the old guard types a shitload of corporate campaign and PAC money going forward, not to mention the money flowing into Trump's coffers instead of the GOP proper.  Old guard ain't going to lie down over that.

Perfect timing ahead of the impeachment.

The scary thing isn't that she is going to beat Mitch. The scary thing is that there is someone crazier in the party waiting for her to make one small slip-up and out crazy her for the power of the party. I use to make the same joke every time some made a crazy statement that they were the favorite for the 2000 Iowa Caucus. But that is now more true than ever. Someone is going to take down Marj within the next 2 years for not being crazy enough.

PMC: The term was originally meant to refer to “salaried mental workers” who are separated from the capitalist class because they don’t control any means of production, but who are also said to have, in Ehrenreich and Ehrenreich’s words, “an objectively antagonistic relationship” to the working class because of the function of their work – reproducing capitalist society – and their high status within workplace hierarchies. The PMC was said to include “teachers, social workers, psychologists, entertainers, writers of advertising copy and TV scripts” as well as “middle-level administrators and managers, engineers, and other technical workers.”

Nah.   He's going to squish her like a bug.  You continue to underestimate the power of the establishment and the big money.  This isn't the same thing as the establishment falling in line behind Trump, it's the fact that they aren't going to let her take the front of the line.

This is the first time since the 2020 primaries that someone in the establishment has said anything slightly against Trump. Honestly, we have no clue how it is going to go down. However, we have a lot of clues. Most of them point to the establishment letting crazy people run amok so as not to alienate the people that support one of their own.

I don’t know. Mitch will turn on a dime if his political calculation changes. Trump has more than $30 Million in his PAC that he raised since losing the election. He can use that to support his loyalists. If Mitch was serious then wouldn’t he muster support for a.conviction in the impeachment trial? When he votes to acquit Trump, how will that affect Trump’s fundraising organization?

I don’t trust Mitch. Biden won the Presidency and Georgia elected two Democratic Senators so my pessimism isn’t infallible but I’m not ready to give it up just yet.

what is a "Hate America Flag"?  Serious question.

Holy shit, does she think that the embassy custom of also flying the flag of the nation in which the American Embassy is located is a "Hate America Flag"?  Honest inquiry.  Oh my god, she saw some photos and doesn't understand how embassies position their flags.  Wow.  Another proud moment for the Trump movement.

I am unaware of any Embassy where the host country nation's flag is flown alongside the U.S. flag. It just isn't done (other countries' Embassies don't do it either).

She may be responding to a tempest in a teapot that included some semi-disinformation from the left side of the aisle-- the "ban" of flying LGBT Rainbow Pride flags on the flagpole by the Trump administration.  For what it's worth, the Trump administration allowed (and even encouraged) the display of the Rainbow Flag during local Pride day or week, but just not on the same flagpole as the Stars and Stripes.  No flags except the U.S. flag were allowed on the "official" mast.  Also disallowed were U.S. flags redone in rainbow colors.  That really doesn't bother me much at all, I think it's fine to reserve the official flagpole for Old Glory.

Fuck The Electoral College. Always and forever.

LOL. If you want to see representative democracy updated, ask for more Senators per state as a tweak, with bigger populations than the Montanas of the world not getting just 2 damn Senators.

Your main beef with the EC is not getting the results you wanted recently. I have real issues with pure democracy, as we are indeed a nation of idiots and sorely need some checks on the emotional braindead unwashed masses. That is why we have (in theory) a six year senate term - to make the tough votes with time as a cover for doing the right thing. The House has always been more asshat, lighting rod, think of the moment.

Hank does not argue a position. He states a conclusion and gives examples that have nothing to do with the EC. You might as well say “The Founders liked slavery, so we should abolish the Executive and just have plurality vote on every issue so the people have a voice...!” But that would be stupid.

The purpose of checks and balances is ALWAYS hated by the side being checked. Your team not getting to do what it wants all the time by virtue of plurality vote is just the designed check on the ‘Tyranny of the Majority’.

If you want to get rid of a particular check and balance because it does not benefit your side politically, fine. I’d prefer a better fleshed out argument than Bama Chick’s “we lost Al and Hillary’s election” and Hanks “Old stuff is no good - ‘cause had slaves and women no vote.”

I agree that we get to use the Amendment process. What is the argument besides my team almost lost this time and did last time?

This attitude presupposes we couldn’t get someone like Trump with simple majority vote. Also, would-be authoritarians can come from the left as well.

Races would be run in completely different manners if the goal was 50% + 1 of the nationwide vote. One cannot assume Gore or Hillary would have won in such a scenario. They may not even have been their Party’s nominees. There are many valid arguments not to have purely democratic elections for the head of the executive. I prefer a parliamentary system, which actually gives individuals less direct control of the head of the executive but arguably ends up with someone more representative of the “will of the people”
