Can someone explain this to me like I went to Texas A&M? Crayon drawings will suffice. I've been checked out from even loosely following the market for months.

Big evil greedy sheep make bet old, decrepit sheep about to die. Other regular sheep who hate big evil greedy sheep take bet and start giving old decrepit sheep tons of growth hormone. Old decrepit sheep get big and strong. Big evil greedy sheep go crying to farmer that other regular sheep make him lose.

If all the trumpy people were to finally realize that Trump was nothing but a charlatan and banded together with their  sane brothers and sisters to stop fighting each other over republican vs democrat and racism then go after the big money assholes and the politicians who enable them this shit could get really crazy.

when i was a junior we were in the im softball semi's and i got ejected for yelling at a (girl) umpire for not understanding the infield fly rule correctly.

so yeah, i'm right there with you, bud.

I once fouled out of a freshman intramural basketball game.

The ref at the scorer's table told me, "Congrats, I've been doing this for three years and have never seen anyone pick up more than two fouls."

We know who is losing here, but who is winning?

That's the rub. the people who are blowing up these hedge funds aren't doing it to make money for themselves. They're doing it for the satisfaction of blowing up hedge funds. They're willing to take financial losses to stick it up the rich evil fucks asses. That sort of motivation isn't exactly accounted for in financial markets.

I agree, most of these folks are losing a little bit to fuck a few hedge funds.  But someone is winning.  Those billions are going out of one pocket and into another.  And its probably other rich funds that are selling their shares for massive gains or the ones who "lent" the hedge funds in the first place.

Go to the wallstreetbets subreddit. There's plenty of people set up to make a fuckin killing if everybody holds strong.

The can't make a killing if everyone holds strong.  Or at least for them to make a killing, they would have to be the ones to not hold strong.  Are they all going to start fucking each other over?

Yeah somebody is going to make the money. But I don't think it's the majority of the people causing this to happen. This was initiated off of a sense of anarchy and lulz.

Eventually some are going to bail and make the money while blowing it all up.

I, too, have been wondering how does the actual firm, you know the crappy business known as GameStop, legally and ethically and savvy-businesslike take advantage of this. It's surreal. You can't issue for stock, dilutes and will help the HF's, and you can't sell a ton of stock, undermines the whole thing. They are like a Thomas Crown thief who successfully got a $100mm Picasso but can't sell it. There is potential but how?

That said, politically, I have never seen such a unifying force. Everyone from Ted Cruz, AoC, prominent business people, celebrity CEO's, Hollywood, 99% that we always hear about that aren't 8-9 figure rich, is united against RobinHood and the 1%.

This is amazing. RobinHood might have said ourselves from ourselves and saved our republic.

Honestly, I don't know how this shit works. But I assume that the shorts eventually have to buy, and they're going to run up the share price again. Then people will start selling once the hedge funds are good and proper fucked. So I wouldn't really call it turning on each other as much as accomplishing their stated goal and then racing to cash out. Also, a lot of the folks who are only in for a small amount of money are openly expressing their willingness to lose their investment, and they're cheering on the dudes with millions on the line. I guess they see those big players as having made all this possible, and they're willing to let them reap the huge rewards.

This thread is a good example of what I'm talking about.

I got ejected for getting in a fight* during an intramural soccer (yeah, I know) game. The kicker is that the fight was against my own teammate.

Ref said something like "I've never ejected a player for fighting his own teammate".

*fight = wresting around on the ground, not actually throwing punches. Thrown punches happened later in the season during another game, against the opposing goalie. I was banned for the season after that.

I would imagine they've sold some stock

Now this (heh heh, NowThis) is a fascinating end game:

The S&P 500 Index is an index of, roughly speaking, the 500 biggest U.S. public companies by market capitalization. GameStop is not in that index, because a month ago it was a small company, in the index of 2,000 small companies. Now it is—measured by market capitalization, though nothing else—a big company.

If the redditors can hold on long enough, can they get GameStop added to the S&P? Can they turn it into a big company just by bidding the stock up? If they can, then S&P 500 index funds will be forced to buy it, no matter the price, and all the redditors who brought it here can get out at a profit. And they will have a big and permanent win, and also the current version of financial capitalism—the index-fund version—will collapse in absurdity.

Nah.  Doesn't have 4 quarters of positive earnings and meeting the criteria doesn't ensure it has to be added.  That's fantasy.

And....yeah.....Robert pretty much nailed it.  The people gathering their individual resources and using them for a publicly stated common purpose -- bad, should be illegal.  A much smaller group of people gathering their individual resources and using them collectively through a single actor (hedge fund) -- totally legal, totally cool.....AND, should be bailed out if they fail.

Individual investors, though....make a stupid bet, bear the consequences.

If you'd like to know what the definition of an Oligarchy is, look no further.  You're in one.

In high school and college, I could never figure the stock market out.  It just didn't make sense to me.  Then one day I realized it was because its' real reason for existence is to make rich people more money.  It doesn't make any sense because it's a fucking scam.  It's the lottery or a casino that us regular folk provide the money for.  Sure every once in a while one of us gets lucky, but that's just to keep us pouring money in to it.

It's essentially a new subset of capitalism that I refer to as United States Capitalism.

The United States has not been a true capitalistic country since prior to Reagan. Reagan's policies destroyed the true capitalism we had and have devolved into what I now refer to as US Capitalism.
