Would love for him to run. I just don't think there are enough middle of the road folks who will vote for a gay president, which is very sad.

I’m not sure the gay thing matters too much anymore. Especially since he’s former military and masculine. I think him being a white boy from Indiana hurts him more.

You of all people should know it will always matter to a certain group of people.

I still think he would be a fantastic presidential candidate if Biden doesn’t run in 24. Unfortunately progressives will attack him for being a white guy.

Progressives will attack him for being a corporate shill.

My very Republican parents like him.  I don't think they'd ever vote for him, but I was still surprised to hear that... and have no idea how to translate what that means.

There is not much NOT to like about the guy if we are all deeply honest.

The guy is whip smart, extremely articulate (not in a jokingingly using that word way) and just flat out one of the best communicators and public speakers I've ever heard in politics though I haven't been around that long.

He has rational positions which he defends with equal persuasiveness and sound logic and he lets those factual basis and positions speak for themselves. He's not too extreme one way or another and doesn't play identity politics.

He has military experience. He has governing experience, as small as it may be via South Bend, IN, and he has strong business experience and acumen.

The problem isn't that he's gay. The problem is he is a young, white, affluent male with obvious brains and ambition, thus he was born 25 years too late because the Dems, via the progressives and far left of the big tent, will never embrace him fully.

This is incredibly dumb. Democrats prefer a white affluent male with brains and ambition. See Biden, Clinton, Gore, etc.

The issue is popularity with minority voters, specifically black voters. Was it because Biden already had them in the bag? Was it because black culture historically has shunned homosexuality? Who knows

The super progressive and far left love him

The first part before that was all correct, however.  Had to double check the author of that post, since he's usually such a knob.

He doesn’t believe any of it. He said it as bait for the last sentence. You have to soften the target before you advance

I like Mayor Pete for all the reasons I stated above. I also liked Andrew Yang a lot too. But I do believe the last sentence fully— and you bringing up white men from 25 years ago (Clinton, Gore) and an obvious compromise candidate in Biden (who has been surprisingly good as a President) isn’t a very strong rebuttal.

Is that why he’ll eventually end of being the party’s standard bearer?

He is getting the DC and Federal experience he needed. He is not going away and I would be happy to listen to his policies. When he ran it was easy for others to beat up on him for being only a Mayor.

I could see him becoming an accepted moderate voice for the Dems.

100% this.   He oozes leadership and pragmatism.   Top characteristics for a president imo.

Him being an amazing public speaker and debater is just the cherry on top.  I mean, can you imagine him debating trump or desantis?  He would destroy them

Uh, no. He was widely castigated by progressives during the primaries because he was McKinsey trained, white, and because in reality he isn't really all that progressive, he's a centrist.

He just seems progressive compared to Republicans.

Today I posted the Carville conversation with Kristol.  Carville is convinced that a Dem must have street cred in the black churches of the south.   Pete ain't got it.

One of the reasons I love him (no homo).  We could use some more centrists around here.  Of course many such people are still labeled socialists, so it's hard to tell sometimes.

He's very good at sussing out the opposing positions to his policies and nullifying them.

VERY early on, before he really made his right turn back to the center, some progressives (including me) were cautiously optimistic about him because he focused on the need to fix political structures (e.g. he was the first to support structural changes to SCOTUS) before addressing specific policies. He threw all that shit out as fast as he could once he determined that triangulation was in his best interest though.

The far left were doing dirty work to sully his name to progressive leaning voters by digging up his McKinsey work and making him reveal it as if they were tax returns. Then they castigated him for doing "centrist" things like management consulting work like streamlining operational costs and increasing working capital and helping to re-organize businesses more efficiently (his work with BCBS comes to mind that people were especially appalled at because it led to a RIF, even though I think his project was before or after that).

They’ll embrace him enough to put him on a presidential ticket and vote him into office.

When I asked this board who was the closest to an R out of the cast, because Trump 2 wasn’t happening, this was the far and away most popular answer. That was the clear #1  from progressives to ever so slight left leaning posters.   Difficult  to come to grips with what could have been.

I don't recall you asking that, which doesn't mean it didn't happen. I do remember Bad Teammate and Bama Chick were his most vocal opponents, who do not represent the full universe of progressives/liberals on this board.

Had I seen your question then, I'd have answered Tulsi Gabbard followed by Andrew Yang, and I'd have most certainly been correct.

I ask that during every major election, try as I might, I don’t follow the D candidates closely. Tulsi was probably the #1, now that you mention it. And yes, Bad Teammate was one of the most vocal against him, as Bern was probably still entrenched.  I don’t recall Bamas stance.  I don’t think many (other than a few) would have minded had he been elected. But there’s also only a handful of folks here that claim they are truly progressives.  I wouldn’t have ever guessed that in regards to Yang.  Either way, I would be considerably happier if Pete was in the office.

Based on policy? I would say Biden is more conservative. Is there a policy position where Joe is left of Pete?

Or it more of a personality thing?

I would wonder about Pete being more pro-business, given his background. Maybe he would be more conservative on trust-busting and appointments in DOJ with respect to M&A. Other than that, I don't know.

I think he would be more conservative than Warren or Sanders, but there is nothing I have read that would imply he is more conservative than Biden. During the campaign, in response to Warren’s antitrust statements, Pete said the FTC needs to be given additional tools to fight big Tech monopolies. It isn’t terribly controversial, but it’s more than Biden said.

My guess is you’d prefer Buttigieg because he’s on the bench. 2nd string quarterbacks are frequently popular.

I would also prefer Buttigieg. But I don’t believe his familiarity with the military or corporate America would translate to a more generous deference for either. Like a good butcher, his familiarity with the pig means he knows where to apply the knife.

He mishandled the police killing of a black man who only had a knife while he was mayor- the body cam “wasn’t turned on” and I believe there were other criticisms, but I don’t think it was a secret that was a major reason he had trouble getting black voters’ support

The railroad industry is weird.  Maybe it's just gone further down the road of capitalism lately, but they paid my grandfather a pension from when he retired at 55 to when he died at 96.  His pension was longer than the time that he worked for them.

It is weird, and there's an explanation.

In the late 19th century, the law of negligence was being developed here and in England, spurred in large part by railroad accidents of all types.  The railroads were anxious to limit their exposure, so the railroads got the first workers comp program in history in FELA.

Then in the 30s, they got the Railroad Retirement Act, which is siimilar to Social Security but more generous.

The railroads have run to Congress for various things early and often, and, particularly in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and Congress responded because of the perceived importance of the railroads to national infrastructure.
