I've definitely moved further left over the last decade of watching private healthcare fail my dad repeatedly in the management of his Parkinson's disease and ultimately kill him WHILE sapping away what was left of my parents meager savings that survived getting wiped out by WorldCom.

chart?ec=-4.0&soc=-6.67

I'm pretty sure the main questions that moved me further left were around regulation of corporations, not imposing my religious values on others, and access to healthcare. Go figure.

Make that two, not one, left libertarians.

You're usually going to vote for authoritarian since they're most likely going to run for their own power.

Three. Not shocked. But the hot button Karl Rove social issue focus is not an accurate measure of philosophy, imo

I'm about here but you're right about the social issue stuff. This quiz hasn't changed in 15 years.

or the candidates are shit.

There hasn't been a remotely viable libertarian candidate in my adulthood( election of 92- present, missed '88 by like 12 days...)

The Dems and GOP count on the fact we have to vote for somebody, right?

You know this, but so everyone else is on the same page - we agree Libertarian does not equal libertarian.

Ron Paul ran on a right libertarian platform.

I did say viable, as a qualifier.

For me at least, that also includes being fiscally conservative.  In my little quiz, that's almost certainly what takes me to the right, because on the moral/ vice issues, I'm basically "leave people the fuck alone until it affects someone else."

I think we just accidentally stumbled onto the pro-vaccination campaign message.

It’s a bad one. CR has very few moderates, conservatives or Never Trumper Repubs. Every time I go in, or someone like me goes in, we get scalped and rarely return. This is after caveating that you hate Trump and carefully apologize for your beliefs. Progressives and leftists and actual crazies (bt, the prolific LSU dude and other admitted socialists) have free reign there, and it’s a wasted board for true political discourse. There’s also this really trendy thing there where you claim you used to be a Republican but are no longer. So many people there do it, here, and in DT. And they actually buy their own bullshit.

Yep, a great way to get negged into Bolivia is to post a divergent viewpoint like "hey what if all conservatives weren't actually racist?  Here me out."  It's not a crime to be moderate or not fit exactly under the democrat or republican banner.  For the record, I consider myself a never Trumper libertarian.  Low taxes, social freedom and mind your business.

But I still have a lot more in common with J Sack and futureman than anyone else on this board. And I’m just fine with that.

I got my first job in Austin through my experience ratfucking (it turns out) for Clements, stealing White yard signs, (for the political service I needed to graduate hs.) I worked on Bob Richardson’s first campaign. He went on to thrice be voted worst legislator by Texas Monthly.

I don’t remember ever voting Republican, though.

And, Dr, the damage that’s been done is not only to your party.

Jump back in time 20 years and you'd see a much more serious libertarian bent.

I'm not talking about people like me who went from Republican to libertarian/Libertarian to independent, or even other people who went that route and ended up moderate/liberal.

When I discovered usenet in the early 90s, holy shit it was a hotbed of libertarianism, and I feel like most of the 90s internet had that bent, simply because the industry attracted that type. Once the walled gardens (CompuServe, AOL, etc.) started merging their users with the rest of the internet, it was diluted a bit, but I still think a lot of internet discussion forums attract the libertarian types.

Holy shit, I just looked and CompuServe is still kinda around, and they still own cs.com (well Verizon owns it technically).  Why they haven't sold off cs.com....that's got to be worth a shit-ton of money.

Disagree, respectfully.

CR is filled primarily with moderates and conservatives - RINOs, neo-conservatives, PMC (professional/managerial class), Never Trumper Repubs, Centrist Democrats, and deficit hawks (Pete Peterson devotees).

Trumpers battle primarily with the moderates and conservatives on the CR.

Progressives have a small voice.

There may be one or two actual leftists.

I know of one left-libertarian on the board.

Just an opinion.

This is pretty accurate. Rex Beeper doesn't want to believe that Brisket used to be a dependable GOP voter. Or any of the others. Back at the old place it might as well have been pre conference alignment. Shit has changed.

He is bitching about going in CR and getting pushback.

Well, so the fuck what?

slorch gets plenty of flak. But, not a lot of negs. Some yeah. And so do I. But, he keeps slorchin. I gotta give him credit.

And that quiz is terribly dated. Has a euro bent too. Some intrepid phd candidate should give us a better.

I took a religious quiz that must have been designed to make me think I was a liberal Quaker. Haven’t found a congregation, but I bet I’d like their services. There’s a very high bar to anyone opening their mouth.

Well, so the fuck what?

I'd take it further: This is a sports forum. A shit-ton of threads in the sports forums are half the thread bitching at the other half about their hot takes, and nobody is whining about their feels getting hurt (well a few do).   I could go post a thread about how wonderful Bud Adams is for moving the Oilers and not relinquishing the name, and how Jeff Fisher's every single move was the right move, especially when it came to Vince Young, and I'm pretty certain I'd have Molotov cocktails being thrown through my windows within 24 hours.

Shit, sports forums thrive on conflict.  It's why they exist.  If everybody agreed 100% on this or that coaching decision or coaching hire or recruiting move, there wouldn't be all that many actual active sports forums - it'd almost resemble more of a blog with a bunch of comments agreeing with the blogger.

But people get sensitive about politics.

Shit, I haven't taken that test in two years.  And whoah, I've changed apparently.

I'll go back to my usual platform and voting/bundling tendencies someday.  In the meantime, I'm gonna enjoy watching some of the people that set us on this course die slow deaths.

The CR can be a terrible place.  I'll never be a Democrat in terms of party affiliation/straight ticket voter.  I've happily supported a number of them over the years and will continue to do so.

But the reason I went down the CR rabbit hole is this---there are two kinds of people on this whole site...those that understand that any other available Republican POTUS could have just as easily appointed those 234 federal judges, and we would have supported him/her.  And those who think that Trump was sent by God himself to perform the 234 miracles that nobody else could have possibly done.  Anybody else could have done that, and served the office with more dignity, competence, and patriotism than Trump.  People say cruelty was the point of Trump, his feature...not his bug.  But it wasn't cruelty.  It was stupidity.  It was the warm embrace of empowered stupidity.  I largely sat out the political threads the first 1-2 years on this site.  I jumped in because I could not believe a site populated with largely educated, successful, and engaged Texans would so proudly wave their flag of stupidity thinking that what this man was doing was a divine miracle.  Any other Republican could have done what he did and we'd have more dignity and less death to show for it.  But nope, the point was to sit back and be stupid for 8 years.  As if most of his supporters ever had a smart day in their lives.

I'm not sure I agree with your argument on the two types of posters. Hell, even in DT, with a few exceptions, most posters at least proclaim disdain for Trump. I'd rather say the two types of posters are those that see a gangrenous elephant and think that all it needs is to duct tape a few healthy squirrels and hope that'll save the rotting tissue, and those that say it needs to be shot and we should go get a new elephant.

I went down that rabbit hole because our football team went to shit and stayed there for way too many years and politics was more entertaining during that time and I do it now because shit our state pols are doing affects me personally, but ummm...that's a lot of words there Lobo.

On that last bit, I sometimes think people overthink it - I think it's a lot more transactional with a lot of the folks you mention - they get tax breaks, judges, whatever it is they want, and so they are willing to overlook a lot of stuff.

I really don't think as many folks here went as far as you think they did in embracing Trump - witness the fact that we never had a proper Q/Qanon thread, like those fucking idiots at TexAgs or SECRant/Tiger Droppings, etc.  And it wasn't because the mods here saw right through it for the grift that it was, and it wasn't because we were crowdsourcing anybody who started up a Q thread. I just don't think anybody here was dumb enough to go chasing the Qanon rabbit, or at least publicly admit to it.

And it's not like we don't tolerate conspiracy theory stuff - we have a healthy UFO thread with a lot of give-and-take (and have had plenty of others), and we've had plenty of JFK threads where I like to remind people that Lee Harvey Oswald's daughter served plenty of us while she waitressed at the Texas Chili Parlor back in the early/mid 1990s, not to mention all of the smaller conspiracy theory threads.  But Surly avoided the Q/Qanon shitshow.

I’ll say ability to reason was lost when the need to reason with one another was lost.

Without need for reasoning with another, there’s no need for reason; even fact becomes unnecessary. Authoritarian goals are not achieved through reasoning with another.

IMO, if you do not want authoritarian clusterfuck-up/future-damage-to-your -party, you have need of reasoning with another.

So you think threads about sports end with everybody sucking each other’s dicks and mumbling Kumbaya?

Even as a non-UT fan, I don't remotely encounter opposition and just good ole bitchassedness in any forum on here aside from CR.  Hell, we have had discussions about Beard leaving my school and coming to Texas, and yeah, there';s some banter, but most of it was pretty damned good natured and people just talking sports.  That's just one topic of many, but it was pretty damned emotional from all sides.  On the football threads, i can't remember getting negged for anything aside from some one off bullshit.

In CR, if you differ from the general mindset, here comes the negs.  Now, of course there are some great posters seeking conversation, and that is why I still go in there.  I took a one year hiatus, and returned JUL 4 of last year, FWIW.    It's like no other forum on this board however, in that there's a good handful of cunts who just ghost neg( drop their neg and never participate in the thread) or just want to yell for their team.   That part is a fucking beating.  Real debate and dialogue does occur,  but some of these fuckers need to be blasted from the site.

We don't agree on many things in this board.  CR is neg central for folks who think nobody should think differently from their politics.  I agree that rep points don't make a shit, but by the same token, why can't the fuckers engage in the discussion and communicate their side?  Nope.  unpossible.

It's not the same on every forum on this board.  Not even close.

I think we should take this topic back to CR proper as this continues to be a decently honest thread about sort of how and why the CR is what it is now.

But seriously "Corporate Communism"?  Majorie, are you just looking around in the dictionary for alliterative terms?  Was S-Corp Socialist Communism not brief enough?  How about Keynesian Communism or Keynesian Corporations or Egalitarian Enterprise or "Majorie, you're a fucked up cunt who represents the worst of this country and we hope you get the 'Die in a Fire' suite a Mar-a-Lago during your next stay."  Is that anything?  Can we put that on a shirt?

Corporate Communism.  Say what you want about AOC, I don't like her policies and we can debate that on CR (they really don't like when you pick on policy).  The term "Corporate Communism" would never dribble out of her mouth like the thalidomide injected lips of Rep. Greene.  Really?  And Gaetz just looked at her like, "Okay, that's a thing.  From now, on that's a thing"

It's a condition of the CR.

If you don't want to acknowledge it, or remain in denial, IDGAF.  You don't post generally conservative POVs, you tend to embrace the anarchist side of things, and I don't say that remotely as a slam.  It's just a lot more palatable to the douchebages whom I am describing.

You and I disagree on many topics, but there's a respect there( not trying to stain your reputation, LOL)  I can't remember you ever negging me, do you?  No, you engage in discussion...

Not a Trumper, I guess that's what your 8-ball response system rolled up on that one?  LOL.

You are such a martyr. You don't get negged for being a conservative, you get negged for being mind-blastingly stupid. To your credit, negging you is a little mean because it's not that you are a troll, it's that you literally don't realize how incapable you are of anything approaching any level of critical thought.

You got negged for coming into the COVID thread and posting gems like:

"I still don’t understand the emotional attachment to getting a shot.  There were people in the spring just absolutely giddy that they got their vaccination. Neither the glee nor the regret are rational." and comparing the relief of seeing relatives with stopping at a red light.

Maybe you need a special badge that indicates you have extra special protection but don't pretend that your negs are due to being a conservative.

That shouldn't be negged.  It's just an opinion.  I still don't see the emotional attachment to getting a shot, whether it is elation or guilt/ defeat.

The opinion is an affront to people's political dogma, however, and there's the threat.  I should not even be allowed to say it, for crisakes.

Yeah, I totally stopped supporting GOP candidates in real life so I could impress chicks on this pretend message board.

I did it to own the Trumpers.  High Five me!

Obviously a lot of people keep their politics close to the vest on here, but it would seem that there are more ex-GOP-because-of-Trump political folks on the whole site than there are diehard Trumpers.  And we know that's absolutely not actually the case in real life, just based on numbers.

The Trump threads on CR could probably be consolidated into just 2 or 3 instead of the 10 or so there are.  The crazy/pedophile Congressional threads could be aggregated into just 1.  It could really be streamlined because when you log-in, it really does look like just 30 hard-left threads about shit.  Or could divide it into two sub-threads, "Trump/Crazy Congress" on one side and then just current policy (infrastructure/China/inflation/etc.) and judicial watch on another side.  Obviously the second side will still get political, but I think a lot of the rhetoric would be toned down once you remove Trump from the debate and also not force Trumpers to have to try and defend MTG or Boebert.  I would fall more right on more issues on such a subforum.

Yes, getting chastised for not partaking in groupthink is still the #1 turnoff.  I still get neg rep and shit for my stances on Hillary Clinton, progressive taxation, the neocon's blame (they were all progressive hawks) for much of the geopolitical landscape, etc.  But I think the #2 turnoff is that most Trumpers on here know there isn't much they can offer a thread about him, not because they'll be shouted down but because there really isn't much to say.  The hollow talking points don't ring true when there's educated people to fact check them.  It's fun to say at a rally when 10000 other people agree with you, though they're not sure why.

tl; dr---we should consider some  sort of revamp to the CR to be more 'bipartisan.'  Best example---it's insane that an attempt to overthrow our government at the seat of its power can't be discussed as "news" on DT.  It's the single biggest event to happen to the United States since September 11th, but we can't talk about it because apparently, "it never happened."
