Virtual Slave Trading in Aledo

I can't even.

Spoiler

Some parents in the Aledo Independent School District say the district has not done enough after an online game was discovered in which 9th-grade students were “slave-trading” students of color and labeling the group chat “Slave Trade,” “N” Farm, and “N” auction.

Students at the Daniel Ninth Grade Campus were communicating on Snapchat, and playing a “game” that put prices on children of color at the school and “trading” them.

Stop sayin “we.” We all know who does this.

This is our state, our country.  It's happening on our watch.  We're all culpable.  We are responsible, and we all need to be responsible for trying to fix it.

I mean, we should....but we won't.  Instead, we'll simultaneously get angry at anyone who dares criticize the greatest country ever, the US of A....as we threaten to secede from that country.  We'll say that the flag of a treasonous movement is about heritage, not hate.  We'll tell black people to shut up and get over it, slavery ended 160 years ago, etc. etc.

We are dedicated to our awfulness.  It's become a renewed national passion.  I guess we've got one, so we've got that going for us.

Nobody is telling black people to get over it or saying it’s not wrong

But.....ummm.....they are.  All over the place, loudly and proudly.  We are a board of college educated (mostly) men of a certain age.  We are not reflective of society as a whole.  And as a whole....we are just fine with shitting on minorities, telling them that racism is bullshit, you can't prove it, blah blah blah, I didn't own slaves, some of my best friends are black, same old shit.  Pretending that isn't a loud and seriously large contingent of our society who thinks this way serves nobody but them -- giving them free reign to do this shit.  This shit isn't isolated.

Oh, and as for us being a murderous people.....I mean, if the shoe fits....our homicide rate is pretty shitty, SUPER-shitty among supposedly developed democracies.  Yeah, there's something fucking seriously wrong with us.

Privileged 9th grade kids are doing this because the culture they come from empowers it.

Your doom and gloom rage porn fetish has just taken a different form than the guy who watches Tucker Carlson 24/7.

I'm not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your police work, there, Lou. In your immediate circle perhaps not, but I have heard that "get over it" comment regarding slavery a depressingly high number of times.

I looked up the demographics for Aledo ISD on the TEA website. According to 2019/2020 TAPR, the district ethnic distribution (all grades) is as follows:

African American: 94/1.5%

Hispanic: 997/15.6%

White: 4,981/77.8%

American Indian: 26/0.4%

Asian: 45/0.7%

Pacific Islander: 3/*

Two or more races: 253/4.0%

So, out of 502 students listed for their report for 9th grade, about what? 7 students are African American maybe? Maybe a few more depending upon the two or more races demographic and how the ethnic distribution is scattered across the entire district population.

I'd say the District is not meeting the needs of some of it's students in how to adapt for the future in a multicultural global world. The leadership and parents can stick their heads in the sand all they want, but doubling down on hateful behavior is bad for the human race.

When this story was announced on local television here in DFW as "a North Texas school district is dealing with racism towards black students", every Southlake parent was chanting "please don't be Southlake, please don't be Southlake, please don't be Southlake".

This has to be a byproduct of the example being set by adults currently.

@Brisketexan, I was spending my evening as I always do, I lit a huge fire in my old Victorian fireplace which is in the middle of my dark, hardwood master bedroom, and sat in my velvet sitting chair as I perused the The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. I ran across a word that personifies you; or at least your online persona:

Kuebiko

n. a state of exhaustion inspired by an act of senseless violence, which forces you to revise your image of what can happen in this world—mending the fences of your expectations, weeding out invasive truths, cultivating the perennial good that’s buried under the surface—before propping yourself up in the middle of it like an old scarecrow, who’s bursting at the seams but powerless to do anything but stand there and watch.

What are they supposed to do?  Some politician from Florida is dating all of their potential girlfriends, so they've got to find an outlet.

I tend to be slow to react in my old age, but this is pissing me off:

District leaders sent a note home to all parents, explaining that the students were disciplined. However, some parents were upset with how the note was written, as it didn’t once use the word racism, but instead called the behavior “cyberbullying.”

I'll admit I'm slow to throw out the "racism" charge but what the fuck?  [Caveat: Maybe they were trading white kids as indentured servants.  If so, I stand corrected.]

His shit is tired. Like I get it eventually but now he’s just crying wolf for whatever reason. Basically turned into an Alex Jones type. Although I do appreciate his steel shank contributions.

That would still be racist.

Not to go all Matt McConaughey, but...

I'm sure you'd respond the same way if they were auctioning off white female students as sex slaves? Or maybe just going public with who's a skank, a slut, or a cum dumpster? I mean it's just teenagers doing stupid stuff, right?

Anything goes in Malign Idiot World.

So are you saying these kids will eventually grow out of racism?

It’s a lot different than drinking, smoking or sexing as a teenager.  As you grow up those things become more socially acceptable.  In don’t think you grow out of racism.  Racism is not acceptable at any age.  (Well maybe when you are 70 and your wife dies and your sons are pussys and a bunch of and Asian gangster move into your neighborhood)

The kids involved should get a hardy punishment.  In my mind a good amount of community service would be very appropriate.

But, I am not going to adjourn to the ledge and start pissing down my leg because a group of high school freshman did something extremely stupid.

Definitely blame a lot of adults, but I also think the influence of social media in the lives of youngsters has emboldened certain behaviors as well.  I do deal with some younger people fairly consistently, and while this specific example isn't really anonymous, there are so many avenues/outlets for behavior/statements most people - even a lot of teens know better - wouldn't dare do without the safety of anonymity.  The worst I have seen personally is actually on Discord.  (probably because I'm not really using SC) Plenty of racial/offensive (mostly memes) content everywhere.  The sad truth is that some parents need to be really vigilant about the types of groups/servers your children are on sometimes...and that's not even considering how many parents are already failing their children with how they talk (or don't) about other types of people, etc.

Yea, as a parent of young kids, I can see how you really need to have a conversation in the pre-teen years with these hyperconnected, online generation of kids that what their cohort or community of idiots might think is funny or contrarian or even sarcastic/parody, is not cool, will be put in the worst light possible, and whatever they do online will outlive their idiotic teenage years and will come back and cancel them in life. Jobs, schools, scholarships, careers, future careers/goals they might not even have thought about.

And even then, like teenage pregnancy and drug use, some might still be hardheaded or stupid enough to engage in risky behaviors that lead to life changing consequences.
