This is obviously the wrong thread - but all of the futbol threads bleed into each other anyway - how much power does the FA or PL have over each team? Like what steps could they take against Roman?

I am not sure that the FA/PL can do anything. But I'm pretty sure the UK government can push him out of ownership due to not letting him conduct business there. He's can't go to London as it is now.

If they had stones or spines, FIFA wouldn’t even question it and toss Russia out. There is little reason for them to care about Russian participation in the World Cup.

Plus Russia sucks. They rarely ever qualify. For invading Ukraine FIFA should ban them from the World Cup if they manage to qualify.

Dang. You got that up before I had a chance to make fun of them for banning their flag and anthem yesterday. It is good to see FIFA doing the right thing here.

There is some chatter that this might be a way to get Italy and Portugal away from each other and they might reshuffle the groups or something.

  • 2 weeks later...

So most confederations start qualification on Thursday. But Oceana started last week.

And it's a freaking mess.

Group A is a cluster as there are now 2 teams, Vanuatu and The Cook Islands, that had COVID outbreaks. The Cook Islands had already played The Solomon Islands. They have cancelled the rest of their games, leaving only The Solomon Islands and Tahiti to play a game for seeding in the next round? And that assumes that The Solomon Islands don't have a COVID outbreak.

Group B has gone how you would expect with New Zealand already advancing to the 4 team playoff. Fiji and Papa New Guinea play for the next spot, winner advances, tie goes to PNG.

As a whole, I don't see how this doesn't just go to New Zealand, but you never know.

If they keep having outbreaks, maybe they just put together an all-star team from the federation to see if they can win the playoff against the CONCACAF #4.

  Country GP Pts GD Max
1 Canada 11 25 +14 34
2 United States 11 21 +9 30
3 Mexico 11 21 +6 30
4 Panama 11 17 +1 26
5 Costa Rica 11 16 +1 25

Times Eastern
Panama v Honduras 9 PM
Mexico v US 10 PM
Costa Rica v Canada 10 PM

El Salvador v Costa Rica 5 PM
US v Panama 7 PM

Panama v Canada 9 PM
US v Costa Rica 9 PM

Just a little more on the help.

Along with the US or Mexico faltering, both Costa Rica or Panama need near perfect windows. If they drop points in their opening game of the window, it makes the margin for error pretty much 0 the rest of the way for them. It would also make a point against Mexico huge.

Fans in Lebanon caused the Lebanon-Syria game be stopped for a long while. Syria jumped out to a 0-3 lead and the fans started throwing stuff on the field around the 70' mark.

They game just resumed with the stands emptied.

The result would just about put UAE in to the Asian playoff slot against Australia.

So there was a near 40 minute stoppage. The scoreboard on the Paramaount feed shows 78' minute, but online you see it as 90' + 28'.

UAE entered the day 3 points up on Lebanon in the standings. The GD was UAE 0, Lebanon -3 (now -6). It would take a near miracle for Lebanon to make that up.

So yeah, they just had Vanuatu and The Cook Islands withdraw, giving group A to The Solomon Islands and Tahiti. They are currently playing (tied 1-1 in the 39') for seeding in the playoff, loser gets New Zealand, winner gets the winner of Fiji-Papa New Guinea.

Asia qualifying is almost done.

All of the automatic qualifiers are set: S. Korea and Iran from Group A. Japan and Saudi Arabia from Group B.

Australia has locked up 3rd place in Group B for the first AFC playoff spot.

The Group A playoff spot will come down to the final day because Iraq beat UAE to keep the race alive.

Standings:

            Pts GD
3 UAE 9 -1
4 Iraq 8 -6
5 Lebanon 6 -6

Their matches on the final day:

Iran v Lebanon
UAE v S. Korea
Syria v Lebanon

The Solomon Islands won 3-1 seeding them #1 in Group A.

Papua New Guinea beat Fiji 2-1 knocking them out. New Zealand continued rolling winning 7-1 over New Caledonia.

So coming next is the KO round:

March 27:
Solomon Islands v Papua New Guinea
New Zealand v Tahiti.

March 30 are the finals.
