What the fuck is wrong with you, Houston?

Reading this morning about at least 4 deaths due to DWIs over the weekend in west Houston. Cmon people, plenty of options to not do this.

one case involved an off duty sheriffs deputy escorting a large load on the tollway around midnight. He was blocking an entrance with his motorcycle and a drunk ran him over. Horrible. However I wonder if cop motorcycles should be used at night. I can’t recall ever seeing that.

Were there any deaths on 290? I drove back from College Station at about 3 am Saturday and the highway was shut down in both directions at Pinemont. Before any one asks why I wasn't in an Uber, I was the designated driver.

How? Had they been locked up at that time on a proper bail amount, they would not be able to commit said crime.  One thing (low/no bail) led directly to the ability for them to commit their next crime.

First of all, the post you responded to dealt with mass incarceration.  Pretrial detention, to which bail applies, doesn't count toward incarceration figures.

Second, people on bail, of exorbitant amounts even, have committed crimes.  People are going to get bail people are going to be denied bail, and "mistakes" will be made, going both ways.

The logical conclusion of your statement is every criminal of any sort of violence, and may some not violent, should be detained pretrial, lest someone get victimized.  That's just not tenable.

WTF indeed.

Saturday - stabbed a police dog attempting to escape arrest

Sunday - out on bail

Monday - killed his father and successfully escaped police pursuit

Tuesday - found and arrested

Quote

A man charged in the stabbing of a Houston Police K-9  over the weekend will be questioned in the death of his father, whose body was found early Tuesday in the garage of his Memorial area home, police said.

Police have not identified the man found dead at the home in the 14700 block of Carolcrest, but HPD Homicide Commander Kevin Deese said he was the father of Ryan Mitchell Smith, who faces three charges from an incident on Saturday that led to an attack on the dog. He posted bond Sunday on those charges.

Smith was back in police custody later Tuesday, captured in Waller County after eluding authorities.

Smith, 26, is accused of stabbing a Houston police dog named Nate Saturday morning during a robbery pursuit. Several witnesses earlier reported seeing Smith stealing merchandise from a Memorial-area business. Smith was arrested and charged with evading arrest, interference with a police service animal and robbery bodily injury. Relatives paid for his bond and he was released from Harris County Jail, Deese said. Court documents stated he was homeless.

After posting bond, Smith was taken to what police said they believe is his father's house. Deese said family members had become concerned about the father after not hearing from him. During a search of the home Monday, officers noticed a suspicious pickup truck parked at the end of the street and confirmed Smith was behind the wheel.

Smith fled and officers chased him to Memorial Park, where he ultimately crashed and evaded officers on foot. Police found a weapon in Smith's truck.

Deese said Smith's father died "from apparently not natural causes," and that he was found in a location that made his body very difficult to find.

Deese said any new charges against Smith will depend on autopsy results. A tip helped police locate Smith walking along Highway 159 in Waller County, Houston police said in a Twitter post. He was arrested without incident and will be questioned about his father's death, police said.

The case for the three charges in connection to the stabbing has been set for April. K-9 Nate is recovering at home with his partner after receiving emergency surgery.

Police cruisers remained outside of the residence Tuesday afternoon, near the corner of Pinesap and Carolcrest drives, along with family and neighbors who gathered out on the front yard.

Rex Casanover, a nearby neighbor who moved to his home on Carolcrest Drive about seven years ago, said he was saddened to hear about the incident being so close to home.

“We have constables that come and patrol here often,” Casanover said, adding that although law enforcement have a visible presence in the neighborhood, crime can affect even the most secure areas. “That was one of the reasons why we moved here but it just goes to show you the signs of the times we live in.”

A coworker had to duck out of a call because the cops knocked on her door searching her neighborhood for that guy. Wild shit.

That is far and away the most common heavy haul escorts, around Houston anyhow.  I managed heavy haul for several years, and we only used bikes.  They are faster, can whip around and run someone down who blows past the barricades, etc.  Since the super heavies in Harris and surrounding counties are almost all night permits, you get ALOT of drunks.  You absolutely wouldn't believe the amount of people that would pull up to the line to stop, wait about 90 seconds, then start honking and screaming obscenities at the police escorts.  We had one drunk run into one one night.  I always had between 12 and 24 of them, depending on the load and route.  One night, drunk lady pulls up and starts honking, screaming, etc.  She gets out and starts to physically harass the police, she's noticeably intoxicated.  Dude walks over to her car, pulls the keys out of the ignition, and hums them about 100' off into the woods.  She just got back in her car and sat there, defeated.  We eventually just left her there as the load passed the next intersection (usually stops were due to lights having to be removed/lifted to pass under).  I never had any fatalities but it happens, not uncommon actually.  Don't drink and drive.

Don't know if true or not, on AM radio this AM they said it's been 150 "violent crimes"  or murders, don't recall how they phrased it, that were felons released on bond awaiting their felony trial.  I'll see if they mention it again in the AM, but 150 is the first time I've heard a number.  They were very specific to mention out on bond for felony crime.   Don't know what timeframe that encompasses, but it was a police/sheriff doing an interview about the guy shot by the Hispanic guy that they can't find.

There is a lot to unpack on this issue. It's always a good reminder that Harris County was found by a court to be unconstitutionally applying burdensome bonds on people accused of misdemeanors. Harris County was effectively keeping people in jail because they were poor.  That practice can cause greater harm on them and their family. To meet the court's requirements on that issue, perhaps the pendulum has swung too far the other direction.

Second, Harris County is still unable to adequately handle court cases due to flooding damages from Hurricane Harvey. If people are out on bail or no-bail for longer and longer times awaiting trial, some of them will probably end up committing a crime even  murder. Whether someone is guilty or not, we shouldn't require they sit in jail for years awaiting an open courtroom.  I believe the Constitution addresses that, and the absence of a courtroom shouldn't be an excuse. This issue is solely on the Harris County govt and every citizen.

Third, there is a political component that some want all bonds to come back even for misdemeanors. They want to punish the accused because frankly that person is probably guilty of that crime and perhaps others. Let's teach them a lesson even if the law isn't on the side of teaching them a lesson.

Finally, I agree that it's good to hear #s (ex. 150 murders) but even that alone doesn't give someone enough info. How many murders occurred for this same scenario 5, 10 or 15 years ago. All murders are wrong but is this normal? I don't know.

All fine points. I wasn’t able to listen this AM for clarification, so while there is a # being reported, it may or may not be accurate, or twisted for political reasons.

If people are being freed with no bail or extremely low bail on violent or multiple felonies, I have no problem keeping them in jail awaiting trial. I find it hard to believe that almost anyone would disagree with that. I don't want to see Houston become NOLA where urban lore is that murder was basically 30 days in jail before you were released awaiting trial.

As I cited several pages ago, there's a specific portion of the Texas criminal code that requires bond to be made available if someone is not able to have a speedy trial. Bill of rights and all that.

The root issue here is the backup of Harris county courts and the failure to seat more judges

Given the thread title, this is probably the single most relevant post of all 970 that have been previously made.

Donald Trump charging $100,000 per couple for Houston fundraiser ahead of Saturday rally in Conroe

Former President Donald Trump will hit two big-dollar fundraisers on Saturday before he takes the stage in Conroe.

In Houston at an undisclosed location, Trump is charging couples $100,000 to attend a private luncheon with him. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who lives in Montgomery County, is listed as the chairman of the event.

And later there is a reception at Lake Conroe where guests are paying $5,000 per couple to attend. Prices climb to as high as $50,000 to participate in a round-table discussion and have a photo opportunity. Co-hosts for that event include former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Both fundraisers are for his new political action committee called MAGA Again! When the PAC was created last year, Trump’s political team said it would be used to help candidates “who have proven to be fighters of the MAGA movement and President Trump's many accomplishments.”

FIRST TEXAS MAGA RALLY SINCE 2019:Trump’s Conroe rally will be like Coachella for Texas GOP candidates

“We look forward to building on the success of MAGA Action with our new committee, Make America Great Again, Again!” said Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida who chairs the PAC wrote in announcing its formation.

The fundraisers add to a busy day for Trump that will also include speaking at a political conference with his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. And at 7 p.m., Trump is scheduled to take the stage at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds for a rally that will include Gov. Greg Abbott.

A bunch of my friends that went to Memorial knew Cam (the dad) well. One says that they put his son on Zoloft (or something similar) last week and he went batshit crazy.

Really tough couple of days for the Houston Law Enforcement Community. Rest in Peace officers.

"Oscar Rosales" is a huge piece of shit, and I have real concerns they find him. Ugg admitted they don't know his real name, nationality, citizenship status, or criminal record. He has the most non-descript appearance that a fugitive could ask for. If he cuts his hair short, he'd look like tens of thousands of dudes in Houston. He's probably going to have to do something stupid like try to get on a plane or cross an international border to get caught.

Sgt. Gutierrez's death sounds pretty tough. He was struck by drunk driver Lavilla Spry, and dragged for over a mile, and the drunk bitch just drove off. I'm glad they caught her so quickly. I doubt she gets life, but she deserves to spend several decades in a cell without air conditioning in Huntsville.

Happy to be wrong on Rosales. That SOB is going to get the needle.

Fuck cops.

I’m lying in bed, my wife went to a concert with a friend. She comes in and say there are 4 cop cars in our cul-de-sac. She asks me what’s going on…fuck if I know. So I walk outside, and ask them what’s up. “We are doing an investigation. It doesn’t involve you. Things are ok”. I reply, No, things aren’t ok, I have 4 cop cars in front of my house”. He just turns and walks off and I hear his buddy reading the Miranda to someone in the backseat the car. Guessing one of the neighbor’s adult kids (and doesn’t live there) is getting arrested.

Fucking pigs. I bet that douche got picked on in high school for his little dick. Just tell me what the fuck is up.

Fucking sick of this place. I don’t live in some fancy fucking village in memorial, but only a few miles from where I grew up in Cypress. Shit was pretty calm back then. Now I got people shooting off guns into the air angry at girlfriends, realtors being shot at, and this fuckery tonight. Ready to get the fuck out of here.

My one experience of living in the suburbs was in the Copperfield area for a year or so. Made me have a horrible impression of Cypress.

Fuck living inside the loop Houston. Shitty schools. Even shittier roads. Too much crime. Too many pompous jackasses. Fuck that shit. I bet that poor little white woman will be rethinking her ownership of one Midtown condo after her carjacking. There was a shootout/killing on Westheimer a couple months ago too, as well as one in SE Houston. I am good on that shit. I am also good on living in a neighborhood where I have stereo Johnny Sacks. Give me somewhere where its safe for my 13 year old to walk/bike to her friend's house, decent schools, and a nice balance of income from middle to upper middle class. My wife's Audi has 17k on it. I have had to replace two bubbled tires, a cracked windshield, and one with a nail in it. All incidents happened inside the loop. I have talked to at least 3 people who have had their cars stolen inside the loop in the last year.

I live inside the loop and don't know a single person who has had their car stolen in the last year. According to my anecdotal evidence, no cars get stolen inside the loop. Crazy how that works!
