That was my first thought.  "Mixed drug toxicity" just like what did in Tom Petty when he was dealing with pain.

Huge losses of very talented people.

yeah I could see that.  damn that just sucks if that is it.  fucking drugs.

holy shit, I didn't realize they just played 4 days ago. they said he had a hip issue. something weird is going on.

I just heard this on the radio as well.  Hopefully it wasn't the same as what happened to Tom Petty.

Sad but true. Heroes of our youth ain’t getting any younger.

The show we saw 2 weeks ago was ZZ Top, John Fogarty and George Thorogood - they are all 71, except Fogarty who is 76. Figured we'd better see them while we can. Fogarty talked about playing Woodstock; made me think how many of those performers are alive, let alone still touring (I'll look that up someday soon)

Well shit, just found out about this. Was listening to their greatest hits yesterday and hadn't purposely chosen that CD in some time. Seems a message was trying to get through my thick head, unsuccessfully. RIP, may you find some tush wherever you may roam.

Billy Gibbons remembers Dusty.  Is somebody cutting onions in here?

https://variety.com/2021/music/news/billy-gibbons-interview-zz-top-dusty-hill-died-carrying-on-1235031028/

Love this quote:

Quote

Is there one overriding trait that comes to mind about him right now?

Yeah. In fact, just within the last couple of months, we were reviewing a couple of the rough tracks that were starting to come together from the sessions that we were conducting just a few months ago. I remember a night where they said, “Well, you’re the producer. You’ve got to tell Dusty to stick around or let him go. He’s delivered his parts.” And I said, “Oh yeah, hold on a sec.” I say, “Hey, Dust, thanks, man. Great job.” So off he goes, and no sooner had he left the parking lot and gotten well on his way down the freeway than we encountered a very short section that I had overlooked. It was only eight or 10 bars. And I said, “Gee whiz, that goes by in not even 30 seconds…” I said, “Bring me Dusty’s bass,” and I handed it to the engineer and said, “You’re a bass player… It’s only eight bars. Let’s just fill in.” Two hours later, we had passed the bass guitar around to every single living soul in the studio, and we still couldn’t match Dusty’s tone. He had something in that damn right hand of his that can’t be described, other than fierce.

This is so true.  I have not encountered many bass players with great tone.  It just seems to escape most who pick up the instrument.  They might fly across the fretboard, but when you encounter a bassist with deep, ballsy tone, you realize what has been missing.  I don't know if it's just pure strength, or more of a subtle technique thing, but I'll posit that @Paul Wesley would agree, among others.

I think Sammy Hagar had a similar quote about being at a sound check and Eddie wasn't around, so he plugged into Eddie's rig... and sounded like Sammy.

But yeah, we don't think about "tone" as much with bass players, but I'm sure the sound is just as much in the hands as the rig.

I wonder if anyone else ever on the planet had a chance to do that - plug into Eddie’s live rig. Pretty damn cool.

Unrelated to Dusty, but Frank Beard is a plenty good drummer.  I will never understand some of those pop era ZZ tracks with obvious drum machines.

Frank is the machine. I mean ... the guy is as precise as it gets. Pretty sure that was him on Simmons drums.

Either that or he was so strung out then that they had to do that. I find both possibilities believable.

I "know" the engineer (via email/newsgroups) who did the record with Billy Gibbons at Ardent Studios in Memphis.  He is not happy with the programmed drums -- that's not Beard playing an electronic kit.  Dusty Hill didn't do much, either.  You can get the basics from wikipedia.

A post from Dusty’s wife.

After 19 wonderful years of marriage that ended too soon, I’ve decided to step out into Dusty’s spotlight to thank all of his fans, colleagues and friends for the overwhelming outpouring of love for The Dust.  It makes me hopeful he will not be forgotten.

He was the kindest, most gentle and caring man a woman could ever Hope to find in a lifetime.   Many don’t believe in fairy tale marriages but Dusty and I truly lived one!    We were inseparable.

He wasn’t supposed to leave me or all of you.  That wasn’t the plan he and I had.   The plan was for another round of physical therapy, with a different approach,  to help his chronic bursitis.   The plan was he would return to the second leg of the tour in September.

Early Wednesday morning my world and yours would lose a great musician and I would lose my greatest love.   He woke me up and we talked and as he was sweetly chatting with me he suddenly stopped and he was gone in an instant.   So, while I feel numb and lost and alone and in a million pieces, I know he will always be with me in my heart and soul and I will join him when the Lord calls me home to be with them.   It is my hope you will always keep him in your hearts.   He loved his fans and always remembered that without fans music is not heard. So, know he truly appreciated each and every one of you.

Dusty was an avid tv and movie buff…always quoting lines and so I share an embellished quote from “This Is Us”  as my last love letter I send with him to his final resting place.

My Sweet Dusty,

The single most extraordinary thing I have ever done in my life is fall in love with you.   The single most extraordinary gift I have ever received in my life was for you to ask me to marry you.   I have never been seen so completely, loved so passionately and protected so fiercely.

I will be with you again.
Love you to infinity and back.

Your wife,
Chuck

I will lay my husband to rest tomorrow.   I would ask that you look to the heavens at noon and wish Dusty Godspeed.

With great love, respect and appreciation to Dusty’s fans, colleagues and friends,

Mrs. The Dust

Of course I do not know how accurate it is and it may have already been covered but I had read that he had a broken hip and dislocated shoulder that he was dealing with. That has to have been miserable.

Whatever he’s playing on I will never get tired of his drum break on Got Me Under Pressure.
