Did I ever tell y'all about the weekend I had some Wendy's chili and got a hug from Susanna Hoffs?  Good times, good times.

Hopefully you had the chili after the hug, or else she likely got gassed.

Bell is definitely a guilty pleasure for me, and I'ma have to disagree on that one. You can get a supreme luxe box (chalupa supreme, beefy 5-layer burrito, taco, choice of chips & cheese or cinnamon twists, and a drink for $7. That's wild. And everything at Bell tastes the exact fucking same, so no need for anyone to say they don't order those particular items

$7? Get outta here!

file_0000000076507230a3ab125816a3780b.jpg

But in all seriousness, "cheap" generally was the wrong word.  Not as cheap would have been a better description.  On average, the cost has increased by around 81% over the last six years with some items increasing by as much as 132%.  So when the nearby mom  & pop will sell me some bangin' tacos for under $6, I've just been less likely to run through Taco Bell for their variation of the same.  That's not to say I won't hit up Taco Bell or that I think that it hasn't maintained what it always was way better than a lot of fast food places out there (looking at you, Wendy's).

Taco Bell is FINE if it's nearby and I'm leaving a bar and am a little bit hungry.

But for the most part, that taco truck on the corner where I get 4 banging pastor tacos for $10 by a guy who doesn't speak a lick of English or a fat ass burrito for $12 that will put me in a coma is where it is at.

Taco Bell sucks now unless you do a group meal deal or one of the crazy box deals. Their burritos are nowhere near worth $6-7 like they charge.

And I was a cheap-ass mo-fo; I NEVER departed upward from the 59 cent category.  You could get 5 items for $3 plus some change from the sofa cushions to pay the tax.  Sober, drunk, didn't matter.  It was the value deal of the era.

I'll do the box, but that's pretty much it.

$.59 Bean Burrito with some fire sauce was the definition of the gift that kept on giving.

That's what I said about Taco Bell above.  Even if these restaurants weren't all less mediocre than before, now they want to charge us a pair of Lincolns for the privilege.  Nah.

Actually, inflation adjusted....the $7 box is close to on par with the old 59 79 99 value menu.

Even so, to quote Willie, I remember when a dime bag cost a dime.

It hurts my soul to pay $2.49 for that 59-cent bean burrito.  That thing is outpacing inflation assuming the former price was around 1995 or so.  And don't tell me labor cost on that item.  I've seen that squirt gun.

Man fuck y'all I want taco bell now.

My qualm with the $7 box is that I don't like the chicken chalupa that comes with it.

The $5 one is okay you get a taco and a beefy 5 layer and a drink.

I don't always need a drink though.

The Taco Bell Cantina down the street from me is pretty good, the in app cantina chicken specials are always solid and cheap.

The Carls Jr is pretty decent also but I miss Braums and Sonic burgers at times.

The meximelt was fantastic, as was pintos and cheese.

The OG JITB bacon cheeseburger on the Kaiser roll, fries and a drink was $3.63 in one era.  That was in the days of dig in the couch for loose change so I could eat that night.  I was almost killed in a car wreck on Riverside Drive at 4:00 am on the way to JITB for that very meal.

We always marveled in college (early 90s) that it didn’t matter what you ordered at Taco Bell it was always about $4. That and the $2.99 two-cheeseburger meal at McDonald’s were staples, drunk or sober. Back when you could pay for dinner with the change in your car’s ashtray.

If not already stated, McDonald's chicken nuggets with hot mustard.  You can get 20 and a basket of fries for like $8.

McDonald's honey mustard is mayonnaise based.

I usually do BBQ/ranch or Buffalo/ranch for my sauces.

And I don't care if they are made with the tears of Fillipino children I'll still eat them.

I hit up a Braum's last year and left feeling that, like everything else, it really had lost a step.  The next week, for the sake of research, I hit up a DQ and was pleasantly surprised to get a pretty decent fast food burger.

I killed more than a few of those back in the day. Only thing I ever really ordered at McD other than egg mcmuffin meals. Numerous drunk conversations with buddies about how there was no way in hell a $100 meal was 33 f'n times better than that $2.99 cheeseburger meal.

At one point in college, BK ran a promotion for $1 Whoppers.  I had buddies borrowing money, so they could buy 50 and put them in the fridge and freezer.  Folks ended up eating multiple Whoppers a day for weeks.

Was it good?  I dunno.  Was it cheap?  Fuck yes it was.

At some point when I was in high school, JITB and Wendys were both doing 25 cent or 29 cent promotions for a couple of weeks. JITB allowed substitutions to theirs. So you could add bacon and swiss for about 25 cents, substitute the bun for sourdough, and just like that you created a Sourdough Jack for for under a buck.

Fast food bargains are indeed a creature that young men specialize in, and Americans are experts in it.

My son tells tale of road trips with his baseball team in Scotland.  On drives back from out-of-town games, they need to stop for food, and the UK doesn't have nearly the roadside food options that we're used to.  McDonald's is their main option.  After a few trips, his teammates were amazed by the difference: they spent 10 pounds on a combo meal.  My son got a big sack of food for 8 pounds.  "How did you do that?"  He explained the art of engineering your value menu order.  He could get 4 snack wraps for 4 pounds, then add a double cheeseburger for 2 pounds, etc.  The art of "acquire sack of food for minimum money" is an American skill, and a valuable one.  I may be past those days, but I get to chuckle and re-live them as the boy tells his tales.

Shit, there's a Taco Bell in downtown Glasgow, and he's converted a good bunch of his crew to appreciating its late-night attributes.  Funny as shit to hear a couple of cute English girls talk about how they LOVE going to Taco Bell after they leave the bars now.

I worked for a guy who had been a big deal at Taco Bell.  He oversaw the double decker taco project.  Quite proud of it.

he always said the challenge was making something new out of the same 7 ingredients and could be assembled quickly and correctly  by a 17 yo who was worried his girlfriend was cheating on him, that could be sold for 49 cents.
