They barely touched on hits like "We are the Champions", "The Show Must Go On" or Freddie's foray into opera duets during his solo career. As I posted above, we got someone's positive memories on how some of their major hits came about to be recorded.

This makes more more likely to see it. For me, News Of The World was their black album. I was already sick of them by the time they got big with goofy arena rock anthems, having barely been exposed to any of their stellar music that came before that. I had to rediscover those years later.

Yep.  Dusty as fuck. Saw it tonight.

Don't know why, but I felt similar to watching The Dark Knight and seeing Ledger deliver such a profound performance while we, the audience, already knew he passed away in real life. In Rhapsody, it's Freddie's own tragic meteoric story that kicks you in the gut.  He'll never be duplicated, and to the previous posters' point, hell, he cannot even be imitated on the mike.

I haven’t seen the movie, but what you are describing is being a witness to greatness.  The no shit, no hyperbole greatness that is a pinnacle of human achievement in some field.  Jordan’s flu game and VY letting his nuts hang are the two I’ve witnessed first hand.  You would have to put Freddy Mercury’s live aid performance in there, MLK’s expression of his dream, Patton’s response to the German offensive in the Battle of the Bulge, Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence, etc...

When someone dies early, it’s a tragedy for those that knew them. When someone who is capable of true greatness dies early, it’s a tragedy for humanity.  But the moment of greatness is a moment of transcendence.  The artifacts of and stories surrounding these moments of greatness are still compelling, years after they occurred, years after the death of those who carried them out.  In that sense, those capable of these moments have achieved a sort of immortality.

Here is probably the only person I've ever seen that even comes close, and he comes damn close.  Dude is impressive

I thought every Queen album up to Hot Space was worthwhile to varying degrees.  Hot Space was crap.  After that, The Works was a terrific comeback.  But after The Works, it was downhill, IMO.

Did anyone in this thread bother to see them with Adam Lambert? I heard good things but shied away because it just felt wrong.

Wife dragged me to that concert in Dallas a few years ago.  Her first concert was Queen back in 1980 or something like that.  Lambert was actually a pretty good sub in for Freddie.  I thought Brian May’s guitar playing was the best part about the show though.  As far as the movie, it was mediocre at best but they all did a really good job of impersonating the members of Queen.

Can someone clarify Rami for us? We aren’t deeply knowledgeable of Mercury. Rami’s performance was certainly captivating, but I feel like he didn’t capture the real Mercury. Rami came across not just as a flamboyant gay person, but almost too goofy for the real Mercury.

Thought this was a good video.

I'm a big fan of Queen so based on a lot of the feedback I decided not to go see it in theaters, concerned I would be disappointed. Finally saw it this past weekend and it far exceeded my expectations. Pretty campy at parts but I felt that they went into plenty of detail about Freddie's struggles rather than just being a story about the band.

Not best picture worthy but I thought it was very well done! Rami Malek did wonderful, the guy who played Brian May is a clone.

Mike Myers cameo was awful, really didn't care for that.

I do wish they would have had more of Freddie's decline in the film, but I get why they decided to use Live Aid as the finale.

I thought the film was a mess. Not because of the actors, but the direction and editing were just awful (apparently it won an editing award from editor’s guild which is receiving a ton of eyerolls). Plotting was cliche as well.

That said, Rami and the other band members’ performances and the LiveAid show made it worth the watch.

Still Cooper>>>Malek for this year’s award. That this movie is getting Oscar buzz is disappointing when A Star is Born likely get shut out other than Shallow.

I’m not sure why Queen’s performance at Live Aid is considered such a historic moment. I mean yeah, Freddie stole the show, but Freddie would always steal the show. Their concert at Wembley the following year was more epic.

From what I understand, it's generally regarded among their constituents in the music community as one of the greatest live rock n roll shows ever.

Crazy the Live Aid concert was the first shoot of the movie due to weather.

I saw this on  PPV over the weekend and thought it was good.  It was sort of like "The Doors" movie of the early 90's.

Frankly I was surprised they made a movie about Queen for the simple reason when you ask people who were the greatest bands of that era,  Queen gets kind of lost in the shuffle.    There were so many badass acts in the 70's and 80's.  Man I miss the era of music compared to the crap of today.

Saw it last week for $3.50 at the bargain theater.  Loved the music and stage show part, but knowing the back story of what happened to Freddie kind of ruined the rest of the movie.  Live Aid segment was outstanding.  With the pervasive LGBT lifestyle currently being shoved in our face across media outlets, just felt like this was more of the same.

The editing of the film was awful and the band should have not had any input into making the movie, every fucking scene they were the choir boys while Freddy was the selfish asshole and the only one with problems. He wasn't even the first one to go solo but you can't tell that from the movie. They held the music rights hostage to get a sanitized version of their life on screen, no one gives a fuck about the other members of the band yet they were in every scene almost. Sacha Baron Cohen wanted to tell the story of Freddy Mercury and he was cut out because the ego of the rest of the band wouldn't let them be in his shadow yet again.

I suppose you are a little surprised at the academy award for best editing?

Saw it over the weekend.  Huge Queen fan so had read a few articles on the movie and was disappointed that so many of the plot points were creations or exaggerations of the truth and like many here, disappointed they didn't hit some of the real drama in the band around issues of commercialism vs creativity, their feud with American radio and the press, and the real lashing they took over playing in South Africa during Apartheid.

In the end, this was a Freddie Mercury movie, supported by the rest of the band, not really a Queen flick.  I mean they fictionalized how the band fucking met for god's sake.  An article stuck with me how as May and Taylor were so intertwined in the movie being made (they rejected SBC's ideas to the point he left the project) and how this felt like a bit of white washing their own histories.  Freddie is presented as the only one who were having issues with his excesses or causing drama within the band (the total bullshit about going solo being the most obvious example), but in actuality the other 3 were train wrecks themselves, especially with women, egos and alcohol.  It felt like someone explained to them that they weren't all that interesting as musicians go and this had to be about the rise and fall of Freddie Mercury, even if they had to fictionalize and create much of the drama.

Now.... that doesn't mean I wasn't entertained because I was.... Rami Malek was incredible as was much of the actors in the movie.  The Live Aid performance was crazy and although i would have loved to seen more reaction to the performance in the credits, it was still a great scene.

One thing that I don't think has been mentioned and although he's a prolific supporting actor.... I loved that Deacs was portrayed by this guy!!!!

Just 2 pages, wasn't TLDR.  Finally saw it, Doors was better, Rockstar was better and those two were ok.

I first noticed Rami in The Pacific, where I thought he was an amazing actor.

I haven't seen Bohemian Rhapsody yet but in watching that video above I was like:

Fucking A I recognize that guy!

Joseph Mazello, who played Eugene Sledge in HBO's The Pacific, alongside Rami Malek, who portrayed Merriell "Snafu" Shelton, also played the part of John Deacon in Bohemian Rhapsody.

If you haven't seen HBO's The Pacific I highly recommend it. Snafu is hilarious.

(I see this has been posted previously but I didn't read it until now)

It was nothing like The Doors besides the fact that it was a movie about a rock group. The Doors was an artsy fartsy caricature of what moviegoers wanted Jim Morrison to be made at a time when fact checking was more difficult. Bohemian Rhapsody was a formula story that took loose facts and good music and intertwined them to avoid tarnishing Queen’s legacy. As was mentioned above, the personal and professional conflicts were completely eliminated from the story. (Why they quit touring America, the band breakup, Deacon retiring from music after Mercury's death, etc.) Both had impressive performances by their leads and are therefore memorable. Neither one is "good", albeit, The Doors is better due to Oliver Stone's visuals.

Well that and Juice Newton when she sang “playing with the queen of hearts” at Kmart arena in Buffalo New York.

I know.  I wish we could go back to a time when them queers was forced to stay in the shadows and suppress themselves so bigots like us wouldn't be so uncomfortable.  Just a matter of time before them queers make me go gay.  I'm not looking forward to it, but there's apparently nothing that can stop them queers from making us all queer now that John Wayne is dead.  Amirite?

Watching the side by side comparisons of the Live Aid performance, it really comes across that the guys are just actors playing musicians. Remi Malek also came across as a straight guy trying to be gay. While he mimicked FM's moves, you could tell they weren't natural and much more exaggerated. The actual band had much better stage presence, which is be expected.

In the movie, the rest of the band is taking cues and watching FM's every move. When you watch the actual performance, they are musicians doing their own thing

So just saw this tonight on HBO and while it was an entertaining couple of hours, I can’t believe Rami Malek won Best Actor for this. Also, I thought Bryan Singer got fired as director. Why does he still have the credit on IMDB?

This is such a yawn comment. There’s shit in every decade. And there’s fantastic in every decade if you look for it. I’ll kindly get off your lawn now.

I mean...this is who Freddie was.  I thought the movie depicted it pretty damned even-handedly, without shoving it in anyone's face.

Wanna watch a movie about Muhammad Ali with his brashness and confidence? and then say they overdid how black he was?

While that is true, you have to go look harder for the good these days, thanks to radio and record producers. The best music does not find it's way to the radio nearly as much as it did back then. Back in the 70's and 80's, you had some "rebels" at many of the stations, ones that would play the better, less mass friendly music. That led to it getting heard much easier. It it easier today to find the music, with everything on the net, but you have to actually put in the effort. Very little of it will get airplay.

I don't get it. How was this film nominated for Best Picture? Malek is great, but the film completely glosses over the fact that he's gay. It also glosses over his family issues. They could have developed his character better, but they went for the red meat and featured Malek as more of a performer than actor.

Oh well, I love Queen's music. There are worse ways to spend a couple hours.
