Who could we realistically hire tomorrow if Sark was hypothetically fired?

You saw what happened on 3rd and 1 right? That's exactly why they called 2nd and 1 that way. Get the ball away from your problem to someone out in space who usually can make a play. OSU was blowing our line up play after play. We just trotted off our starting center. OSU is playing off the ball. The problem wasn't the playcall the problem was the execution. Casey, instead of putting the ball right on the receiver where he has time to stick his foot in the ground and make a man miss, leads the receiver right into the incoming tackle. Here it is for you to see. 2:14.10 mark if it doesn't load at the spot. Then on 3rd and 1 the end clearly crashes on the read play, but instead of Thompson taking it outside like he is supposed to he decides to go inside where traffic is. On 4th and 3 as soon as he starts to scramble his eyes are down. If not he sees the easy dump to Brewer for a 1st. Casey was clearly rattled. The calls weren't the problem.

I also saw what happened on 1st and 10.

“You gotta recruit players who can play better than you can coach.” - John Cooper 10/11/21

I should probably add that there’s a lot of irony in that quote because Coop recruited some great teams but couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag when it came to beating Michigan.

You are missing the point. It's not the play calls. It's the folding mentally of the players. That was the same play that X takes to the house first play of the game vs OU. You get it to him in space with a single dude between him and the 1st and he is making that dude miss. That's a good call vs the look that was given, just a horrible horrible throw. Defender that made that tackle was 14 yards away from X.

If you’re suggesting that 2011 is evidence that Luke Fickell is a bad coach then you’re as dumb as a lot of Buckeye fans I got into arguments with back then.

1 year isn’t indicative of any coach but it is a small glimpse into what he did when handed an audition for a big time job and proceeded to shit all over himself. What makes him all that different than Charlie Strong at similar points in there career trajectory?

Bullshit. We are fucking Texas. The flagship of the 2nd most populas state in the union.   Our 4th largest metro area had more people than the entire state of oklahoma.     No reason we should ever Lose to their junior college.

Howdy!  I'm a Sooner fan living in the heart of the beast outside Austin TX.

I've been lurking on surly horns for awhile.

You are 100% correct.  Not only should Texas dominate Oklahoma, it should be a dominate national team.  You have everything.  You're a populous state.  You have the best HS football in the nation.  You have plenty of endowment to your school.  There is only one reason Oklahoma has been better since WWII.

Coaches.  Bud.  Barry.  Bob.  And now Lincoln.  Your coaches, other than DKR (who was a Sooner) have pretty much sucked.  Mack was pretty good, but Bob owned his a$$.

That has been the difference.  That's why an average university in a pretty small backward state has had more NC's, more Heisman winners and getting more RRS victories recently.

And Sark, ain't getting it done.

You left out the 3rd Mike, Mike Price who never made it to coach his first game. He was fired after a night/weekend of booze, hookers, and blow at the beach. At least no hookers were killed on that weekend.

yeah I know.  I didn't include him because he never coached a game.  what a buffoon though.

How about instead of spending $20M a year on coaching staffs, we (big money donors) just use our war chest and newfound NIL and pay the best OL, DL, and QB prospects we can find?

This. If our BMDs really wanted to win, we could turn it around in a season with an investment of under $5M in NIL contracts. It’s a lot cheaper than paying coaching buyouts. Start with $250K offers to 5* OL/DL recruits and highly rated portal transfers.

Eh coaching is one reason and a case could be made it isn’t even the biggest reason. Much of it has to do with culture. You could swap Lincoln and Sark today and the records are the same. Texas as a football program has been apathetic for a decade and it started when Steve Patterson and Chris Plonsky did their best to tear down the program and suck the life out of it.

Culture trickles down from the top and although the administration has turned over largely it’s almost impossible to fix it over night. Sure would Nick Saban fix it quickly? Yeah, because Nick could flash his 7 National Titles and tell everyone to sit down, shut the fuck up, and this is how it’s going to be.

The last 2 weeks is indicative of the culture of the program for the last decade, not any one coach. Success as a coordinator doesn’t mean anything necessarily in terms of being a successful HC but Bud, Barry, Bob, and Lincoln’s first HCing jobs were Oklahoma. How were they successful? There is a culture that doesn’t accept losing, sure everyone wants to win but at Texas there is a culture where when you lose on the field did you really lose? Those losers have to go back to Ames, Stillwater, Norman, Manhattan, Lawrence, you’re getting a degree from The University of Texas in one of the most lively cities in America, with endless possibilities. That kid across from you who just kicked your ass that wasn’t as highly recruited as you has to go back to a dump.

Recruit the same kids, one wins every year, and the other loses. You think Sark just forgot how to fucking coach? Herman? It’s a top down culture problem that has infested the program.

No it’s not. You don’t know what you’re talking about and all the evidence since then contradicts that position.

What did I say that was wrong? Him and Charlie are eerily similar in terms of where they were at at similar stages. People thought Charlie was a pretty damn amazing coach too until he laid out all the evidence that contradicted that position during his 3 years at Texas.

It's year one, no coach should be judged harshly until year three. Bunch of fucking people here that work in accounting but think that they know more about coaching than a professional coach.

Take a step back and give Sark some time to build a roster with players.

nobody thought Charlie Strong was a pretty damn amazing coach at all.  It was more "huh, OK I guess at least our D will be better and we won't be soft".  yeah about that.

nobody thought Sark was some amazing coach.  it was more "huh OK I guess at least our O will be great and hopefully Saban magic rubbed off of him".  his head coaching record is well known.

its gonna happen whether we like it or not. he's getting at least 4 years under CDC.  but it will end the same.  great OC.  not a HC.

Old Red McCombs would finally see his dream come true.

People who idealize Gruden as the ultimate football genius don't know shit about football. Fucker is, and always has been, all hat and no cattle, but he has the same appeal Dennis Cowher did. Rust Belt dude, mean-mugging skills 10/10.

Fuck, the dude's lifetime record is 117-112 but every time he's not in the NFL mouthbreathing boosters everywhere from here to Knoxville think he is just the cat to turn their ailing program around because it gives them a chub watching him glare at people on the field and then they can't help but furiously masturbate when they watch him break down film. He hasn't won a playoff game in the last nine full years he coached and only made it there twice.

Basically he's Dennis Green, except Gruden who a lights-out D (provided to him by Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin) to a Super Bowl win against a Raiders team quarterbacked by Rich Gannon. Twenty years ago...

Shit, his career win percentage is almost identical to the third decimal point with old fuckface Mr 8-8 himself. (Fisher.512 - Gruden .509)

This is the kind of thinking, at its extreme end, that prevents from taking a chance on a Jeff Traylor.

Everybody has their own opinion. I personally didn’t like the Charlie hire at all but he was exactly what Luke Fickell is now. The hot up and coming mid major commodity which was the point of the post.

His HCing record is more nuanced then many make it out to be, how you view it depends on how you feel about him as a coach. He took over a lifeless Washington program that was 11-37 the 4 years prior and winless the year before he got there, and Sark went 34-29 in 5 seasons finishing 8-4 in his last. Then at USC the plane never got off the runway because of his personal issues that are well documented that I don’t think are all that relevant now.

Royal was 17-13 in 3 seasons as a HC before being hired by Texas. Nick Saban was 43-26-1 as a HC before being hired by LSU. Oklahoma’s 4 best HCs had never had a HCing job prior so the *insert coach* head coaching record is well documented argument is a little hollow for me.

They are either going to be successful or they aren’t and there are many factors outside of a head coaches control that are going to help determine that.

That's a fact.

But Texas, state or U, isn't a united entity working towards a common goal. In reality it's a huge conglomerate of petty fiefdoms that loathe one another to the point they would rather see their neighboring rivals fail than succeed together. It's a rare thing indeed that will bring us together for more than brief moments.

Oklahoma, state and U, are comparatively simple: hate Texas and win. Doing so gives them purpose and validation. It's vital to their existence.

Texas doesn't have that. We're the Roman Empire. They're the barbarians.

DKR told Mack to put all the bb's back in the box, and that's how Texas wins. Get everyone on side. Those two had success because they weren't simply coaches - they were talented gladhanders as well. They could politick well enough to make all of those petty lords feel important and involved and get them to work together to bring in top level recruits and donate money.

That's why Texas isn't easy to coach at. And that is - like it or not - the type of coach we need to have success.

Sark's going to be here through 2023 at the absolute minimum, probably through 2024. The name I will be keeping an eye on that might line up with that timetable is Dave Aranda. We'll see how it plays out for him at Baylor and if he gets scooped up by a LSU or USC or something. He recruits well by Baylor standards, has plenty of experience in Texas/SEC, and has Baylor playing very physical, disciplined football.

This Coach FunkSoulBrother has won 59 national titles.  Seems like a no brainer.  I think at the age of 95 he'll also bring much wisdom.  And it looks like he won his 59 titles at Texas.  Let's no quibble about how he got away and just find a way to get him back.

But winning that much isn't good for the kids.

Not that Texas could hire him tomorrow.  But I have wanted Texas to hire Gundy for a while now.  Proven winner in the Big 12.  Main draw back is his record against OU.  But clearly better than any coach we have had in 15 years.

  • 3 weeks later...

Time to get this thread heated up.

It would be different if the Offense was progressing…..if players were showing improvement, scheme was evolving, players executing. Instead, we’re regressing on offense and showing no improvement on defense. Yes, we lack personnel. Player-wise we’re just not that good.

But this coaching job has been awful. Atrocious. Reminds me of the Charlie years where he didn’t know how to fix anything and he couldn’t identify what needed to be fixed and where to start.

We can’t go into the sec with this can we?

Can't.  We're Texas.  We'll claim academic superiority over the secsecsec knuckle draggers to make ourselves feel better.  This school has not been serious about winning since 2009/2010.
