And yet I’ve never seen one and I’ve never heard that any of my family who still live in Amish country have ever bought a dog from an Amishman.
Well I guess that settles it! Nothing to see here folks, Amish puppy mills is just a terrible myth created by Big Puppy to take the heat off their huge non Amish operation.

Shut the fuck up you fucking dolt.

Weird. When they rank just US National Universities, Rice (17) is much higher than UT (38). In world rankings, Hahvaad is #1 while Princeton is #16. In US National Universities, Princeton is #1. Further solidifying my opinion that the US News & World report rankings are arbitrary & full of shit, although I guess global reputation  wouldnt factor into the National rankings.

Those national rankings are based on criteria that are significantly different than the global rankings.  The global rankings are significantly weighted toward publication/citation criteria.  The national rankings are more heavily weighted toward graduation rates, student retention, faculty resources, student resources, and student selectivity.

Last year, during lockdown, two UT undergraduates who'd never met were both suffering from severe mental health issues.  Even after on-campus services resumed in person, both were having an impossible time getting appointments with therapists.  Even at a campus of UT's size, there's just not enough resources.  They even tried to private pay with professional therapists in the great Austin community.  But between the patient background incorrectly matching specialists, insurance red tape, and long wait times before appointments became available, both silently suffered.  They met in the Dept. of Student Affairs lobby, both desperately thinking if they could make their appeal to get some help in person, they'd be scheduled faster.

Using tele-health technology to match therapists outside Austin who have both expertise and time available, an AI program that more accurately pairs you with potential therapists, beta test help from a couple of big insurance companies, and therapists/counselors who know that engaging a person in their 20's can significantly reduce customer acquisition costs as they may stay on longer as a patient.....they launched:  https://psykheweb.wixsite.com/website/services    PSYKHE (remember the name)

They gave a helluva pitch on Saturday and we awarded them $10,000 from the Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship.  They now have access to tremendous mentoring and early stage funding at McCombs/UT.  In less than a year, they went from mental trauma to a viable business model that will reach back for all the other young people our systems leave behind in this country

Impressive.  Most of the rest of us went from mental trauma to "drink and post on Surly more," so they seem to be ahead of the game.

I did a half-hour "coach-up" session with them and I did ask, "Have either of you considered unruly message boards and alcohol as a possible treatment solution?"  But they replied with something about helping others in need is the best medicine, or some lame-ass shit like that.  I dunno, I just wanted to hold up the oversized check for the cameras.  I still get choked up thinking about the opening to their pitch.  I've listened to several hundred over the years and this one was just absolutely captivating.   So proud of them.

Over the years, I have become more and more disgusted by college athletics and the NCAA.  Occasionally, a good story comes along and gives me a sliver of hope.  I know everyone has seen the videos of Jordan Davis directing the band.  But before last year's Sugar Bowl, he went into the stands and thanked the band.

I always love reading their updates each year.  So Sorry the grandpa died.  But sending this story to my family this year as we are scattered around the county as usual...but it should put a smile on everyone's face.

The black teen that was accidentally invited to white grandma's Thanksgiving a few years ago....is still going and set for year 6.

Unfortunately the grandpa in the story died of Covid in April 2020

That's actually one that gets me -- all the way gets me.  It's the good stuff.  Grab the kindness and opportunity for connection where you can, and share some humanity.  It's one of my favorite of the "feel good" stories.

Have seen a story last 2 weeks on ABC News about a deaf school out in Cali thats one win away from winning State in their Class, would be their first in 60+ years of existence.  Dig stories like that.

I went to junior college with a guy who played football at Smithville.  He said that he hated playing Texas School for the Deaf, because their offence always went on a silent count (of course), but the quarterback would make a weird noise at random times and draw the whole defensive line offsides.  Screwed up their timing something fierce.  He also told us that having a deaf player sign shit at you was funny, but a bit unnerving.

So this is the anti-Brisket thread?

Love the first post. We have an organization at our elementary school called Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students). A couple times a year we dads get to go to school and be the Watchdog. We help with carpool, spend time with a few different groups of kids doing learning activities, and then read to our child’s class. At lunch we wander around helping kids open their juice boxes and whatnot. You will never get more high fives than on you get on Watchdog day.

And this IG is a good follow:

College athletes are now able to profit off their name, image and likeness (NIL) and many are using the opportunity to make money. One athlete is giving back to his college's community. Iowa offensive lineman Tyler Linderbaum donated $30,000 from his NIL earnings to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

His mother, Lisa Linderbaum, shared a photo of her son holding a big check with the caption, "He kinda did a thing," and tagged the hospital in the post.
