such a candidate will be called a socialist and a lib by the MAGA wing of the party, and you won't know any better but to believe them

I should have been more clear. I meant a center R.  If you don’t have enough sense to drop the D in Texas, you don’t have enough sense to legislate.   Plenty of local stuff to get involved in, I suppose.

someone else coined the phrase, i just recognize its accuracy and appropriateness. but it's good that you fully embrace your zealotry, people deserve to know who the child-sacrificing cultists are among civilized society.

of course, it's Texas, the cultists are in charge anyway.

Texas sucks. 40 something in education, bottom in infant mortality, bottom in Medicaid/ Medicare, bottom in health care… run by white Christo-fascists. I mean, it’s great for a land owning white guy, but man, outside of that, this place sucks shit.

oh you mean the democracy that one party is trying to destroy and in Texas is actively passing laws to circumvent, the party you keep voting for bc it protects your child sacrificing cult status above literally everything else, that democracy? yeah, it might be in trouble.

Rs never use the slippery slope argument for more guns would create more homicides and/or more AR-15s would create even more mass shootings.  Nope, the slippery slope argument only slides the way of if they start taking away ARs, where will they stop?  Because Rs love guns and winning hypothetical gun right's arguments more than the lives of their actual, very real children that they were supposed to swear to protect.  They didn't--they failed them, horribly.  So horribly were their failures, that they can't even hold an open casket service.  That's how bad the pro gun argument failed to protect their children.  But hey, those slippery slope gun rights arguments are holding solid.  And that prayer game is doing something, somewhere, I have to believe, or mass shootings would stop.  How's the wild pig population coming--are they winning that yet?

The feral hog population is actually increasing inversely in proportion to AR15 sales.  Do you know why, Texas?  Because the only thing that can overcome prayers to Jesus about mass shootings is the one animal he could not consume.

you outlawed feral hogs.  Now only non-kosher outlaws have feral hogs with guns.

if this isn’t making any sense, imagine how fucking dumb our gun access is.

Our culture is so sick, folks kill others with guns. Don’t you dare blame the guns.

I think about this with the "guns are inanimate objects" argument.

Hey, should we legalize fentanyl? It's an inanimate object that does no harm until someone uses it.

NSIAP. Chronicle editorial about how the Santa Fe (TX) school shooting has been ignored or forgotten.

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/editorials/article/santafe-uvalde-shooting-anniversary-guns-18108481.php

2018 school shooting outside of Houston. 10 died. School district has done very little to acknowledge it. Unlike how the school was torn down in Uvalde, sounds like Santa Fe got a new paint job and wall tiles in the shooting/death rooms.  The article blames politics and the strong GOP local base.

What shocked me the most was that victims' families still haven't been allowed to learn details of their loved ones deaths. Texas passed a law this session to allow families access to autopsy records. I haven't heard whether Abbott will sign it. Can't have activist parents doing something to inform the public about these deaths.

Point of clarification, the school has been scheduled to be torn down and replaced, but a year later it still stands.

There is currently no scheduled date or budget for the demolition of the school, but the district and Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin have assured residents that plans are forthcoming.

Construction is set to begin on a new school adjacent to one of the community's existing elementary schools in August for students to attend as early as 2025. The district has set a fundraising goal of $50 million, which will be the sole source of funding for the school.

Usual back and forth.  Blacklab wisely closed it because it's just another mass shooting with no news updates or lessons to be gleaned, just all shouting at one another.  The one pleasant surprise was Fondren&Main chimed in to question my mental health, mention my wife, and his firearms collections.  But called me the crazy one.  I mean yeah sure, that's true.  However, I consider it to be a line crossed to mention my marriage, well-being, and his guns in a couple of posts bookending one of mine.  I was gonna report it but in real life, I found out he's got some issues (as we all do) including treatment for low-T and erectile dysfunction so I let it slide.  Him and HandCruser, they can't tell the different between internet bullshit and true mental illness yet are called upon in real life to ascertain whether or not somebody should be able to purchase an AR-15 with real world (not neg rep points) consequences.  And they failed to see the irony.

Anyway, back to mass shootings.  Not to make light of the tragedy, but if every Surly asshole were gonna chime in on an event:  The Klymax Lounge?"

https://www.kmbc.com/article/kc-police-identity-victims-shooting-klimax-lounge/43962191

Horrific tragedy.  Since several involved were under 25, we can talk about age restrictions, right?

An 18 year old and a $2K gun able to inflict property damage at more than $50 million... in addition to 19 kids and 2 teachers murdered, injuries, psychological trauma, and forever linking a sleepy town into a place forever linked to one of the worst tragedies the nation has seen.

That's pretty weird.  I bet if you walked around with a ziploc bag full of tic-tacs in downtown Austin or near the Capitol.  And printed off a massive label that just said "Fentanyl" or "Opiates" and kinda held it up waist-high, you'd be tackled by LEO within 3 minutes.  Maybe even shot.  But you walk around with two AR-15's with live ammo and finger on trigger, you'll get "Way to go Patriot!" high-five.

Watched one of the “one year later” specials on Uvalde and was not surprised to learn the dominant culture citizens sided with the school district against the parents of the murdered children who wanted the superintendent fired.

Well, they also sided with the governor that should have been fired.

Today is the 1 year anniversary where 19 kids got a one way ticket to the afterlife and a few closed caskets funerals in Texas at Uvalde. So any changes were made?

One year, and if you go to the Lives Robbed Twitter feed, they've set the birthday to May 24, so Twitter animates some happy balloons.

https://twitter.com/livesrobbed

I usually find myself emotionally detached from most news events. Or maybe it's better described as emotionally muted as I don't like attempts to sway me emotionally. The pictures of the children in the context of their at-home lives featured in the tweet has really hit me this morning. For example:

image.png.98c09bdb1a08df8993f05dae5f441eff.png

Maybe it's because the school photos of child victims become generic to me. I see now that the photos in the grids published by the media are not all school photos, but the effect is the same. School is a generic setting. Settling for generic pictures may be another example of the laziness of most TV "news" outlets. The smiling faces, all the same size in their uniform rectangles, become like the neutral dots that form a pointilist painting of a bloody, monstrous event. I respond with outrage to the event, but the victims become just a roster.

Looking at a picture such as the above shows an individual girl and father in their version of a generic event. The people stand out. The girl now torn and in pieces by the devastating passage of high velocity bullets through her person in her elementary school classroom. See the father's arms from which she is forever removed. It gets to me.

Compare it to this:

image.png.23b2949348a6fe96b59c5639035450b7.png

I'm not looking for heightened sentimentality in the choices, just something more distinctive: something more individual.

This may stem from my recent feelings about referring to the enslaved American always as "slaves." I've wondered if doing so ingrains a notion of these individuals as part of a lesser class which has maybe fed subtle racism in whites and bred resentment in Blacks.

If I may carry on in tedium for a few more lines, I think I finally get the connection between genericizing and acceptance. This event would have mobilized action across the entire country 50 years ago. This is not because those alive 50 years ago were any better at being humans but because this would have been an astounding, shocking event then. Surely the word unthinkable would have been accurately batted about.

No more.

You should see the short videos that some parents have posted. Just seeing the kids actually talking, smiling... and then reading the absolute heartbreak those parents have gone through.

Even if you're against more gun control and think hardened campuses and bullshit like doors are the answer know that Abbott and the rest of the jackoffs in this state haven't done a single fucking thing in the last 365 days to keep this from happening again and again.

Some incredible (and infuriating) reading here:

https://www.expressnews.com/projects/uvalde/victim-obituaries/

Quote

Xavier James Lopez was always dancing.

It ran in the family. His parents would break out their own moves, and Xavier — often called “XJ” — was quick to follow. He especially loved dancing cumbia. His mother often posted videos of her boy on her TikTok account.

Dancing “was his DNA,” she told CBS News. “That was his blood.”

Xavier was born on March 12, 2012, to Felicha Martinez and Abel Lopez. He died May 24, 2022, at Medina Regional Hospital.

The 10-year-old boy was extroverted and funny, with a smile that would cheer anyone up, his mother said.

Quote

He then posed for a picture with Annabell Guadalupe Rodriguez, his childhood friend and longtime crush, who had recently become his girlfriend.

Annabell had come home on the first day of fourth grade talking about a boy who smelled nice and dressed really well, her mother told ABC News.

In pictures that his family has shared over the past year, Xavier is often sporting a stylish getup — button-down shirts, Adidas sneakers, his hair slicked perfectly to one side.

Xavier and Annabell would pass notes in class. Annabell wore a picture of Xavier around her neck — it was a gift from him, according to ABC.

Quote

He’s now buried next to her.

I'd love it if Uvalde Activists snuck fireworks into the chamber gallery and set the all off to sound like a fusilade.

I first thought AR-15s with blanks, but I prefer the absurdity of these idiots diving under their desks, pulling out their pistols, and wounding each other fighting off the sound of firecrackers.

(Not digging at your man, @safe sex, just thought the visual applied.)
