Exactly. Isn't being a congressman better than being Texas AG? I mean, he's a dumb motherfucker but apparently, he's not losing that seat any time soon.

Trump asked him to run in anticipation of 2024.  You know, keep the vote straight and all.

I didn't realize he was 68 -  I figured he saw AG in Texas as a more visible stepping stone to something bigger down the road, since he seemed like he was going nowhere as a Rep.

Can think of a few reasons -  trying to keep the Dems in Texas down through voter suppression, and putting his boot on the neck of the liberal cities being at the top of the list.

But it also means Paxton's fucked, because Louie, etc. aren't jumping into this race if they didn't smell blood in the water.

He knows his district is safely red. He supported the Stop the Steal campaign, and even though he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, he likely knows about hanging on to power and this is the way to do it for the GQP. The AG spot combined with the Republican governor and redistricting will take care of Texas for the rest of the foreseeable future.

There's nothing wrong with millions of assholes.  There's nothing wrong with millions of stupids.  There's actually even not much wrong with stupid assholes.

Our real problem is being a Stupid Asshole is now a source of pride, nothing to be ashamed of or try to keep quiet.

Somebody gave them a seat at the table and it's gonna take a generation to get them back to the kids' table.

Be grateful for Florida, my fellow Texans.  Be grateful.  They're all that's keeping us from being the national punchline.

He is an aggy.

He's about as aggy as you can get. throw in a little 70's era Baylor influence, and its easy to see how he developed his enlightened worldview.

Gohmert enrolled in Texas A&M University, receiving a U.S. Army scholarship and earning a B.A. in history in 1975. He commanded a cadet brigade in the Corps of Cadets and served as class president. He was also a student leader for the MSC Student Conference on National Affairs alongside future U.S. Representative Chet Edwards, and a member of the Ross Volunteer Company.

Gohmert received a Juris Doctor degree from Baylor Law School in 1977

Is it possible that he will drain off votes from enough stupid assholes in the primary to let someone like Bush or Guzman to sneak in?

That's a real possibility.  The Stupids split their vote between Paxton and Gohmert.  One of them advances to the runoff against Bush.  I think this is actually beneficial to Bush to have Gohmert in the mix.  I like Eva, but she's not gonna get to the runoff.  csb/ She came to speak at the academy we started for first generation college students.  She brought a clerk of hers who was this gorgeous 20-something.  Anyway, sitting across from the two of them at lunch...was uh...awkward.  When she got up to speak, everybody stood to applaud her except me due to a fantasy I was having about them.  /csb

What were we talking about?  judge-on-clerk porn?  I mean, AG race.  Yeah.  Fuck Louie.  But I bet George P. is okay with this.

They didn't change the rules about runoffs, did they?  Where if you pull a GOP primary ballot, you can't pull a Democrat runoff ballot...and vice-versa?  I should know the answer but it's 2021 and I stopped giving a fuck.

Picking who to vote for in that primary is like trying to pick between runny shit sandwiches because one has mustard, the other has relish, and the other has sliced onions., and ending up in a vigorous debate over which one is better.

Who gives a crap?  They're all just shit sandwiches.

Maybe I'm wrong but I feel Paxton is far more dangerous than Gohmert, who almost seems like the proverbial village idiot. (I just now realized that SOB made it through law school. Torbush.) Maybe Gohmert is dangerous in a different way -- he'll just do whatever the governor/lt governor tell him to do. Paxton is a criminal AG. That seems bad. Real bad.

So we're going with degrees of bad we have to live with now? I'm going to hang out on the lanai. It's a bit breezy today with a chill, so I have a thermos of Irish Coffee....

It's what everybody is thinking in the Texas Governor thread. As bad as Abbott is, it could be monumentally worse if Huffines somehow won. I mean, we all want Beto -- or even Wooderson -- but the chalk is definitely pointing toward whoever wins the GQP primary in March.

This is exactly why I'm voting in the Republican primary.  Abbott's a pandering pussy, to be sure.  But Huffines is pure batshit crazy evil, and I shudder at the idea of a majority of voting Texans electing him as our state's leader.

Paxton is scum.  But for whatever reason, the thought of him remaining as AG worries me so much less than having Huffines as our governor.

What this presupposes is that.....maybe there is???

And like I said in the Louie thread back when he announced - I think he already had the $1 million lined up, and was just wanting to pull in money/gauge interest.

Huffines won't win.  I'd like him to be angry enough that he runs third-party/MAGA in the general, but he couldn't win.

Abbott needs enough of a close race that either Huffines runs third-party, or Abbott needs to be scared he'll lose MAGA and keep up the hard right bullshit that could push a lot of people away.

MM wins R primary in runoff against Abbott due to strength of name recognition and Social media/celebrity.

Beto coasts thru primary.

Huffines feels slighted about two “libruls” on ballot in GE and declares third party.

Beto win.

I think a lot of D's would cross over and vote for MM in the general.

isn't this a step down from his current position?

Depends.  He's 68.  Where does he go from being in the House? If the Rs can't retake the House next year or in two years, he'll still be a member of the minority party, and his effectiveness is muted.

He's never going to be President, VP, or even a cabinet member.

If he's some kind of "Team Player" type that cares more about the GOP and/or Texas than himself, you could see this as his attempt at trying to help the GOP stay in power/relevant in Texas long past the demographic changes the Democrats need. But he's never struck me as the team player type playing a long game.

If he wants to make a wider name for himself in Texas, given the shit that Paxton has jumped into in the past few years (Trump's lawsuits, etc.), this certainly gives him a springboard to do that.   His background probably has better connections for an AG run as well.

I'm kind of wondering if he's setting himself up for something in 2026 - either Governor or Lt. Governor.  If he jumps into a crowded AG race and knocks off the incumbent next year, that gives him a solid 2-3 years to make a statewide name for himself and build up a base (and to show BMDs that he can knock off an incumbent) before he has to start campaigning in mid or late 2025 for the 2026 primary.

His stupidity has taken him about as far as it can go, leadership-wise, within the GOP House caucus.

If he wants to advance further politically, his only choice is a state wide position and rely on the stupidity of Texas voters to put him there.
