have you played with the new irons?  i am curious about getting some new sticks.  I literally have the same Ping Eye 2 BeCu set (2-SW) that i did when i was like 10yo in the mid 80s that have been re-shafted a few times.  I am pushing 50 now lol, but have never seen the need to get any new clubs.  Will probably just get some new fairway woods and call it a day, but was talking with a buddy as we played the other day and he was going in for a fitting after seeing another buddy improve after doing the same.

Has golf tech *really* improved that much?  am i missing out?

taylor made 3 wood hits smoother than my gf’s smooth booty. Highly recommend

id get the last model on close out, M4 stock shaft

the 5 wood also slaps

I’m of the camp that it probably helps but it’s still the Indian and not the arrow.  I upgrade every few years and I love my irons when I hit them well, but you still have make a good swing.  On the other hand, I’m 60 and I’m hitting my newish irons and newish driver/3 metal longer than I ever have.

First off, I used to play Ping Eye 2s back in the 90’s I think.  Loved those clubs but someone stole them out of my garage in Dallas.  To answer your question, I played yesterday with the new irons.  Overall, I hit really shitty with them.  That being said, our range was closed and I have never hit them before (picked them up Saturday) so I was hitting them on the course for the first time and really need to hit each iron at the range for a session or two to get the feel for them.  I was playing Taylor Made M4s and switched to Titleist T 300’s.  My clubs were like 4-5 years old but the tech has changed just in that time span as every iron I tried in my fitting went higher and farther than my Taylor Mades.  The best irons that I hit for my swing were the Titleist, but the Mizuno Hot Metals, Ping G425’s and Srixon irons were also really good. I will say I had a few mis hit irons on the course that I swear my Taylor Mades would have sent into the rough on the right and these stayed straight since the are so forgiving.  The Driver I switched to is a Callaway Rogue Max D and I have played that for 3 rounds now and I swear I don’t miss the fairway because its so forgiving.  Even a mis hit that should slice OB still ends up on the fairway so pretty happy with that.  I also got a Titleist TSR 3 wood which I have struggled hitting off the deck the first 3 rounds of use but that’s on me as I suck at woods off the deck and never hit them.  I figured I have to start trying to hit the 3 wood so I have to accept bad shots.

The best purchase I have made was getting fitted for a LAB Mezzo putter in July.  I was a shitty putter with my Spider and with the LAB I hit the putt straight where I want it to go 99% of the time.  I have been sinking 4-6 footers consistently when with my Spider I would literally go 0-10 on those in a round.  That putter is worth every penny to me.

i hit my BILs taylor made 3 and 5 woods and they were incredible.  soo much more forgiving than what i was playing (ancient Adams driver and taylor made 'Burner' 3W from late 90s)

Unless you are a great ball striker who hits the middle every time, I high recommend hollow bodied irons. I was gaming Srixons Z765/Z785 set. Loved the forged feel but was getting punished a bit for off center strikes. On a whim I bought a Tour Edge C722 7 iron and played with it a few rounds and hit it at the range to compare to my Srixon 6i and 7i. What a huge difference.

I bought a full set up C722 irons and absolutely love the forgiveness. It's a little stronger lofted so I'm not surprised at the small distance gains. But the forgiveness is off the charts.

Yeah if you are still hitting PE2, be prepared to recalibrate your distances.  I'm about 15 yards longer on short irons these days compared to when I was a better golfer 20 years ago.  Here is what I have hit since college.

Golfsmith Tour Model IV

Callaway Steelhead x14

Ping i20

Ping i210

back in the day, I probably built 50+ set of those tour model IV’s. We were a busy golf shop and those were damn popular. All had to do was glue them and grip them

apropos the recent discussions. imo, most clubs from major oems are about the same. with their r&d, they know how to make thin, light, strong flex faces which allows them to move the weight to the perimeter to offer forgiveness. all OEMs have and are still perfecting this. i don't think you can go wrong with any club choice from a major oem. it just comes down to personal preference. the real world results won't differ all that much.

Said simply:  It's rarely the equipment that's the problem.

agreed, but the equipment can help a little. having a newer driver and hitting it 10 yards further from the tee gives you one club shorter on the approach. hitting it off the toe on a hollow bodied iron vs a normal iron can give you that extra 5 yards thereby missing the front green bunker giving you an easier chip to the hole. it won't fix your slice or hook but may make them just a little bit better. it won't cure your chunks buy may give you that extra 5-10 yards that you otherwise wouldn't get.

Shaft choice is more important for me. The heads are more of an aesthetic thing, they're mostly all the same unless you find something that fell off a tour van. But being fit for clubs and finding the right shafts, with possibly a lie or length adjustment, can give you a lot of confidence.

Last time I got fitted for a driver the guy said that the shaft is the engine and the club head is the hood ornament.

but zip core!

Played with my CBX Zipcore wedges for the first time yesterday. Holy shit I have never chipped that well from 30 yards to right off the green (using the 52 degree).  Also, hit the full wedges really good (52 and 56 degrees) and straight (75-100 yards). Maybe it was flukey but I was getting spin like the pros get on my chips and approaches which I have never done before.  It felt like I was cheating compared to the way I usually hit my Volkey’s. Game improvement wedges are worth it to me if this will be the way they always play.

Nice!

Crash said chunk, and first thing that hit my head was that fucking song. Props on their advertising. It works.

I did look at those to fill the gaps, ended up with the Callaway Mack Daddies, but they’ve done really well.

I might grab one just for shits and grins.

I bought a 50 degree cbx2 gap wedge. I didn't like how wide the sole is. The wide sole may be great for a sand or lob wedge.

About to start playing golf again.  My folks are transferring their CC membership to me, which saves me significant dollars from what applying for a new membership would.  CC is a no brainer for both professional reasons and social aspects as we have a lot of friends and family who are members as well.  And it is close to our house.  I am mid 40s and have played maybe 10 rounds of golf in the last 15 years since I got married (I chose hunting and fishing as my main hobbies). I used to play a lot of golf.  Like several rounds per week in college, law school, and throughout my 20s.  I shot in the low 80s when I played but could not break 110 right now.  I want to get to where I can shoot in the 90s keeping legit scores and not embarrass myself.

I love my irons/wedges and do not want to change them.  But my driver and fairway woods are 20 plus years old Taylor Mades and basically dead when I hit them.  Should I just go to a golf store and try out a bunch of different woods?  Or is there some brand that is considered the consensus best right now?  I am at a loss. I have not read anything about fairway woods/drivers since I bought those Taylor Mades back in the late 90s.

Hit whichever club looks best to you at address. We all have out favorites but button line, you’ll have the most confidence in the club that looks best to you. I love Taylor made woods, especially their fairway woods.

id get new edges too, iron last but new grips. Where do you live ? I have a set of ping wedges I’d let go for just about nothing

good read on graphite shafts

Yeah I’m in pretty much the same boat as @Frank Drebin. Played a ton of golf up until 2000 or so and then didn’t pick up a club until last year. I’ve still only played about 10 rounds and have borrowed or rented clubs every time until last month when I finally got my clubs out of storage in Austin. Fitted Titleist DCI’s made in the 90’s. They suck compared to new irons. I will definitely be buying a new set when I figure out what I want.

Bay St Louis Police Chief Toby Schwartz claimed that Biloxi resident Mark Curtis Wells, 51, originally fled the scene in a dark-colored Tesla before surrendering.

I’ve been on board with super stroke putter grips since day one. I’ll upgrade as soon as these are available. If you’re still using an undersized putter grip, I highly recommend you give these a try. It really improves your stroke

https://golf.com/gear/golf-accessories/superstroke-zenergy-putter-grip-houston-open/?amp=1

. #csb back in the day I was OG ping grip all the way, with three wraps. Then I started wrapping the outside with tennis wrap.

Agreed.  My only complaint is that the end of the gripe wears out from the wear and tear of going in and out of my bag.  I’m about to get my third one in 4 years.  I may start taping the tip with some heavy tape.

Tape it up for sure. I chip in so many, I usually don’t have that problem
