2022 Texas Softball - Locked and Loaded

It's interesting the 2 transfers Texas added both have 3 years of eligibility left. If you know OU is going to win the national title maybe this is the right strategy. Build for the future instead of 1 year rentals.

Maybe it will still happen but I was expecting more transfers based on playing time from last season. I thought Texas might be in danger of losing Mya Holmes and Ashton Maloney based on playing time. That probably played some role with transfers. Do you want to run off two highly ranked recruits for 1 year rentals in a season where you aren't going to win a national title?

True but I thought UCLA had the 2nd best roster last year.

I view it as OU way ahead of everyone, then UCLA slightly ahead of some other teams, and then a group of other teams.

And they have the second best roster again.  They matched OU at 2 positions (Perez-Lee and Yanez-Storako).  The difference is Sanders.  Which means jack shit, because it's just Alo -> Sanders.

OU will win it again and UCLA will likely be their opponent unless they have another WCWS clunker by starting off in the loser's bracket again.  Hopefully courtesy of us, again.

This has seemingly become the new thing. These old coaches ride out the summer and wait for fall season to kick off, and then announce their retirement. It allows them to somewhat control the narrative on the replacement. Same thing happened at Illinois State.

Also a good way to screw over athletes from leaving.  Hard to find a landing spot / money in August when the new transfers/freshman come in, money is allocated, playing time is/was promised, etc.  Basically stuck with new coach for a year before you can get into the portal, unless you can figure out how to graduate and transfer mid-year.

The AD knows and helps prep friendlies so that they do not catch heat for the handoff. Kids are pressured to not disrupt the program.

'23 roster.   Hailey Dolcini will be a grad asst.

Article about McClennan game.    Pitchers in order of appearance,  Czech, Simpson, Hulon, Morgan, Gutierrez, Day

AUSTIN, Texas – On Saturday afternoon at Red & Charline McCombs Field, Texas softball christened its 2022 fall season by banging out 24 hits, including 11 of the extra-base variety, and six pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Longhorns rolled past McLennan Community College over 12 innings of action, 22-0.

Major Players

Sophomore transfer utility player Baylea Brandon (2-for-3, sac fly, double, five RBIs); freshman infielder Viviana Martinez (2-for-4, double, three-run HR, four RBIs); junior shortstop Alyssa Washington (3-for-6, sac fly, double, two RBIs); junior utility player Courtney Day (1-for-3, sac fly, double, two RBIs), sophomore third baseman Mia Scott (2-for-3, two walks, four runs scored, triple, RBI); redshirt freshman outfielder Ashton Maloney (3-for-6, three runs, two steals); junior designated player Jordyn Whitaker (2-for-5, double, two RBIs)

The Details

After a quick one-two-three first inning behind UT junior left-handed pitcher Estelle Czech, the Longhorns offense got right to work. Maloney kick-started the outburst by driving a leadoff single to left and quickly swiping second. With two in scoring position following a Scott base knock up the middle, a sacrifice fly from Brandon and a Day RBI double to left boosted UT in front, 2-0.

A walk and a hit batter got McLennan CC in business against Czech during the top of the second. After a grounder moved the runners up 60 feet to second and third, Brandon and senior outfielder Lou Gilbert made consecutive grabs to leave the pair stranded on the base paths.

Gilbert kicked-off Texas' second by beating out an infield single and advancing to second on an error. That set the stage for a Whitaker RBI as the Jacksonville, Texas, product hit a run-scoring two-bagger to center for a 3-0 advantage. Following a Maloney single up the middle and a Scott walk, Brandon laced a two-RBI single to center to make it 5-0.

Sophomore pitcher Sophia Simpson entered the circle for the Burnt Orange & White starting the third and struck out three Highlanders over two strong innings of work.

Texas added three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to stretch its advantage to a commanding 11-0. The effort was keyed in the fourth by a Brandon RBI single and consecutive sac flies from Day and Washington, while a Camille Corona RBI knock to left and pair of run-scoring groundouts highlighted the fifth.

Facing UT junior reliever Logan Hulon in the top of the fifth, McLennan CC got two runners into scoring position courtesy of a walk, a passed ball, a single and a steal. A pitch got away behind the plate, but freshman catcher Katie Cimusz raced back to recover the ball and tossed to Hulon for the tag to preserve the shutout.

Following a quiet sixth and a commanding top of the seventh inning of work from sophomore transfer reliever Mac Morgan, Texas' offense got back to work in the bottom of the frame. Scott did all the work herself by launching a one-out triple to left center before racing home on an errant pick-off attempt.

With Texas already up 12-0 in the bottom of the eighth, freshman infielder Leighann Goode lifted the Longhorns offensive output to an even baker's dozen. The San Antonio, Texas, native started her efforts by launching a one-out double to right. She soon demonstrated her impressive speed on the base paths by hustling all the way around from second to score on a passed ball and boost the lead to 13-0.

UT freshman hurler Citlaly Gutierrez took over in the circle and kept McLennan CC off the scoreboard by posting a combined two K's over a quiet ninth and 10th inning.

In the bottom of the 10th after a Mya Holmes double to right center and a Vanessa Quiroga walk, Martinez stepped to the plate with two down and launched a three-run HR to right to make it 16-0.

From there, Texas got two solid innings of relief work from Day and added a six-spot to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 11th to finalize its 22-0 score line. Holmes (sac fly), freshman utility player Maddie Pomykalski (double), Martinez (double), Washington (single) and Whitaker (single) all recorded single RBIs during the outburst.

8-1 over St Mary's last night.   Morgan started,  Goode started at SS.   2-1 till the 9th.   Good challenge,  St Mary's has a solid DII program.

Texas St on the 9th will also be a good barometer.     Check TexasSoftball on twitter for a good replay.

AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field, Texas softball improved its fall record to a perfect 2-0 by registering 16 combined hits while downing St. Mary's, 8-1 (10 inn.).

Major Players

Freshman infielder Leighann Goode (3-for-6, run, double, RBI); sophomore transfer utility player Baylea Brandon (3-for-4, double, RBI); sophomore utility player Vanessa Quiroga (2-for-3, two runs, double, two RBIs); redshirt freshman outfielder Ashton Maloney (2-for-5, three runs, walk, double); junior utility player Courtney Day (1-for-2, walk, RBI); junior infielder Camille Corona (1-for-2, run, RBI); freshman utility player Maddie Pomykalski (1-for-2, RBI); junior designated player Jordyn Whitaker (1-for-3, RBI)

The Details

After Texas left two stranded in the bottom of the first on a Brandon double to center and a Courtney Day walk, St. Mary's threatened by loading the bases against Longhorns sophomore transfer pitcher Mac Morgan in the second. The Creighton, Mo., native wasted little time battling her way out of the tough early jam, however, by registering two big strikeouts to leave the bags packed.

The Rattlers eventually grabbed the lead against sophomore reliever Sophia Simpson during the top of the third as free passes and a Texas defensive miscue combined to grant St. Mary's a 1-0 advantage.

The Burnt Orange & White answered right back in the bottom of the third to deadlock the contest at 1-1. Sophomore outfielder Mya Holmes kicked things off by drawing a leadoff walk. After Lou Gilbert fielder's choice, Goode stepped to the plate and launched a two-out, run-scoring double to center.

A combination of Simpson, junior relievers Logan Hulon and Estelle Czech and freshman hurler Citlaly Gutierrez combined to quiet St. Mary's bats from adding any more runs to the board the rest of the way.

With Maloney standing in scoring position, after a leadoff walk and a Corona sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh, Pomykalski delivered a clutch single to center for a RBI to push Texas back in front, 2-1.

Texas' offense finally erupted to take control of the game in the bottom of the ninth, plating four runs on six hits to boost its lead to 6-1. A Maloney leadoff double to left and RBI singles from Corona, Quiroga, Whitaker and Brandon combined to do the major damage for the Horns.

UT finalized its offensive output at eight tallies during the bottom of the 10th on the strength of a Quiroga RBI double to left and Day's RBI base knock to center.

Lost to Texas State 8-7. We were down 8-2 and scored 5 unanswered but not enough. Brandon and Day hit HRs. Unsure who pitched when they scored 8 runs, as SS started and gave up no runs before Czech took over. Unsure who pitched after that

21 -1 final.

Speed, athleticism, small ball.

No errors.

Gutierrez needs experience but will contribute. Not shy,  attacks the hitter.

Lot of talent.   Keeping ‘em all happy with PT may be a challenge.  Need to find a leader in the infield like Janae,  Bella has the outfield.

Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call. Would like to get my daughter some tickets for a high profile series for Christmas. I posted a couple from an LSU game and several from the WCWS. Hoping to see them in OKC again!
