Again, I know nothing of the source material beyond the “main four” books/movies, but it appears they’re setting up another fellowship?  You have four hobbits that will hook up with a wizard, an elf with one man and I’m sure they’ll find Isildur, but I don’t see how they get a dwarf involved unless old Durin kicks out Junior for insubordination and they scoop him up. Otherwise, his spot will be taken by Theo.

youtubers continue to absolutely dump on this show but I’m enjoying it.

So what's the timeline on season 2?  Season 1 finale is next week (episode 8).  We looking at Christmas time, or after the first of the year in 2023?  Or a year from now?

Would guess end of summer 2023

They just started filming, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's 2024.

I liked Galadriel in this episode. Hopefully this version sticks around. And I'm glad we got a Celeborn shoutout. So far I'm pleased with the show, but not acknowledging him and the near-flirts with Halbrand was one of those things that had me teetering on the edge. Waiting until the penultimate episode of season 1 for that throwaway line about Celeborn seems like the writers just trolling us bookfags, which I sort of respect.

Elrond and Durin continue to be the best part of this show. Especially Durin. The Balrog is the most fan-serviced thing they've done. Not only that they're introducing it thousands of years early, but also the design. It's a testament to the Peter Jackson films that one of the biggest (not really, but still) criticisms you can levy against it is that he messed up the design of the Balrog. And this show just piggy-backed off of it.

At this point, I'm just hoping that meteor man isn't Gandalf. Coming to Middle-earth this early and hanging out with halflings is too on the nose. There have been enough subtle references to the deeper parts of the lore to convince me that the writers have a deep respect for Tolkien's work so they won't swerve too far out of the lines, but they also had that weird Galadriel sword fight scene in Numenor that's been in every show ever, so I'm also not sure how mature they are as showrunners.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, The Rings of Power showrunner Patrick McKay said that he and fellow showrunner J.D. Payne expect to work on season 2 for “another couple years.”

Well that seems like at least 2024.  Fack.

The sexualization is annoying and a distraction. And a serious departure from the movies. I'm probably posting this take in the wrong place so go ahead and neg me - but Earien is too hot. It's fucking stupid. If I want to watch porn I'll go watch porn. She's extremely pretty in a very sexual way and her big tits only compound it. It just feels out of place.

I was definitely thinking about this post during at least one scene in the last episode

They are at least trying to make you think he’s Sauron. I haven’t read any of the books, but the show is dropping hints:

He’s made the king of the south lands right before Mount Doom is created?

And he was mad that Adar didn’t recognize him when Adar thinks he killed Sauron?

And he’s a smith when Sauron forged the rings of power?

I don’t know if ultimately he will turn out to be Sauron; but that the vibe I’m getting so far, and especially this episode.

on point

I've no idea how the people who are thoroughly educated in all the Tolkien canon are gonna feel about this stuff, but I thought they provided a plausible origin for the elven rings, and they reintroduced Sauron pretty well.  I'm not sure having Galadriel keep it a secret (although apparently not from Elrond) is wise.  But I suppose in the source material Celebrimbor knew that he was Sauron when he forged all the other rings, right?  Except the One Ring, obviously.

I loved the Morgoth cultists--or whatever they were--having their Oh Shit moment when the wizard said, "From shadow you came, to shadow I bid you return!"  Oops, that's not fucking Sauron you fucking morons.

Did everyone else assume that they were mistaken when they hailed him as Sauron at the beginning of the episode?  It seemed obvious to me, in that moment, that Meteor Man was not Sauron, and therefore Halbrand was.  I lost that bet, as I didn't believe it was Halbrand.  "I've been awake since before the first silence was broken" was a pretty cool line.  For some reason, I think Galadriel is getting hotter each episode.

I'm still hoping he's one of the blue wizards and not Gandalf.  We don't know anything about the blues so they can do whatever they like with him.  Making him Gandalf is so unnecessary.  Glad Nori's going off to the east with him.  The Harfeet were a little annoying in the early episodes but they turned out pretty cool.

Looks like Adar wasn't lying.  He really hates Sauron and thought he killed him.  Will be interesting to see what happens when Sauron arrives in Mordor, currently ruled by Adar.

Spoilered so some odd doesn’t stump across by accident

Spoiler

Sauron feared Galadriel according to Tolkien (he saw her as an equal), and we had the scene with Frodo offering Galadriel the ring in the movies, showing how she’d become the dark queen, so I like where things are headed, but they still have 30+ episodes to go.

Also this is bugging me so I’ll ask how others saw it.  Elrond or celebrex said they need pure metal for forging the alloy and wanted nimrond’s dagger. But they melted it down in one pot, thereby mixing the gold, silver, and whatever the blade is made of together.
but somehow end up with 3 ingots that are pure, and different colored?

none of that sequence made any sense to me.  Why is her dagger the only source?  It felt like a clumsy way to get to some sort of closure maybe with her brother and that she is doing these things for her and not for him anymore?

I’m trademarking Wizard in a Ghillie Suit for a band name.

Spoiler

The Sauron theory was spot on. Sometimes, we as the viewers, overthink it while the show runners are laying it on thick.

If The Stranger isn’t Gandalf, people are going to be deeply pissed off/confused. It must be him with The Hobbit connect.

It feels like the Elves want to defeat Sauron, but they need him to survive and vice versa. A very muddled combat.

Well done. This is an excellent show and beats the hell out of The Hobbit films.

All of this guys videos are terrific--and he's done a ton of them related to all things Lord of the Rings.

But if for no other reason, this video is a winner based solely on his calling the mystic priestess chicks the Naz-Gals.

He did point out something that didn't occur to me.  I'd assumed they were human followers of some cult of Morgoth and therefore had transferred their loyalty to Sauron, but given the wraith-like appearance when the Stranger banished them with the staff, they appear to exist in the unseen world so they might be higher beings--I think he suggests lesser Maiar.

Probably won't be important in any way but that's cool.

I also didn't notice Halbrand's pupils turn to slits when he was yelling at Galadriel.

Not everything is making sense, but I don't really give a shit.  This show fucks.

I'm with you.  There's some stuff I thought could've easily been avoided/done better, but on the whole I really enjoyed it.

I'm going to be really disappointed if the meteor man is Gandalf and not one of the blue wizards because they'd be sacrificing some real creative liberty just to try to market to casual fans who would likely watch regardless.   And it would straight up contradict Gandalf's claim that he never ventured into the east.

Sauron’s indestructible blood sword key that turns a mountain in to a giant forge - a plan that is clearly hundreds (thousands?) years old - and y’all think adar is behind this or Halbrand is Sauron in disguise?  This is Sauron’s long fucking game. As Adar says, he was missing some small but if dark magic. I bet he is bound to the sword, “killed” by Adar so he could wait. Last bit was figured out, so Adar is lighting the forge up and bringing the master back.

That didn’t age well.

The metals came from Valinor where her father went to ask the Valar (Gods) for help, I believe.

I still think the Wizard is Radagast the Brown. They aren't going to fuck with the canon too much and Gandalf doesn't show up in middle-earth until the TA. So this motherfucker is narrowed down to a good guy who wears brown.

If you look back at Sauron being Halibrand, that is a twist not quite pulled off well. I don't know but I felt left wanting. What the fuck is his deal to just wander around middle earth? Or did he intend to be on the raft so he could meet Galadriel so she could eventually take him to where Celebrimbor was forging shit? That should have been made more clearer that he was on a mission, otherwise...meh.

Galadriel proves that she is the real fucking deal. She is passing tests left and right and is the one that comes up with the idea of 3 rings for only elves to balance out the power and keep them right. These 3 rings don't really amount to dick in the later LOTR story...don't factor in at all because the elves won't wear them until the one ring is destroyed. So I don't get why it helps them stay in middle earth?  I don't really know enough Tolkien shit to know what the fuck, so I guess I'll just say that I am very entertained but confused on this ring part. I need to watch it another 2 times to maybe figure it out better.

It’s power from the Unseen world. I’m not sure we can make assumptions here

They weren’t trying to make it a twist.

They do wear their rings of power.

Halbrand being Sauron was a twist to me. Like I said I have to see it a couple of more times. And I thought I remember that in the LOTRs that the elves created the 3 rings without Sauron knowing, in a different way than he conceived. Not to rule but to elf magic kumbaya middle earth.

It definitely looked like, in the show, Sauron knew they forged the rings before he walks over towards mount doom in his holocaust cloak. Bad guys always wear these things.

Yeah, they are fucking with the timeline.  We need to just get used to it.  The end result will be the same.

He hauled ass before they even started. He doesn’t know.

It was a surprise to me as well, so only because I assumed they were going to try to hide him. I also thought that he should have already been pulling strings with the elves, but they condensed that a bit (so my own fault for being a minor book nerd and not just watching what they’re showing me)

The writers said they weren’t trying to make it some unseen twist because that only works one time when you watch it. They also said season 2 will kind of be Sauron’s origin story.

I enjoyed how they mirrored / foreshadowed some of the books and movies with Galadriels line about being a queen that could shake the foundation of the earth and Gandalfs line about following your nose

I’m hoping that Galadriel is forever put off by men due to Halbrand’s betrayal - and next season she’ll have a lot of lipstick lesbian nude scenes with Earien.

Celebrimbor invents the internet,  but is killed by the Eldar when they discover his hand in Dwarf/Harfoot porn.
