wouldn't mind a follow up series, maybe with Kim working as a paralegal or whatever and maybe that assistant prosecuting attorney from "Saul Gone" could team up with her and they could solve crimes and have pillow fights and stuff.

She might be in the follow up series, but they haven't shown any promo photos of her.  Looks almost like the dad from Malcolm in the Middle, but I thought he stuck to comedy.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you there.  The BCS scene where Mike kills Werner, the German construction foreman in charge of the team building Fring's lab, is the most gut wrenching, yet beautifully done scene in the whole BB/BCS series.  Film making/acting just doesn't get any better than this.

Half Measures and Full Measure back to back were just incredible.  The look on Jesse's face when he has to kill Gale is up there for me.

he couldn't do that during his 7 years in prison then live out the rest of his life as jimmy mcgill again?

Or while hiding in shopping mall.

I think the episode of BCS where Mike recounts the revenge for what happened to Matty was one of the best episodes of television I have watched ever. S1-E6 Five-O. I will miss this series. I will miss Jimmy. I will miss Kimmy. And I will miss Mike.

It's funny how no one seems to remember what Mike did in BCS S1.

on the Jimmy courtroom thing it is just one of tropes.  Plenty of times we see a character make a noble self sacrifice while thinking there were other options...

G & G are on record as saying that re: Breaking Bad, as they wrote the show they simply asked themselves, "what would this character do in this situation?" they themselves never exactly knew where the story was headed. they didn't have a vision for a finale that they needed to build towards, they just sort of let the story unfold and told it as best as they could. and that is why BB has what is generally considered to be the greatest conclusion/finale of the great modern dramas.

imo, for BCS they said, "how do we get to kim and jimmy smoking squares together in a way that throws things back to their best days together", and then made the story around that, which is why in my opinion this show, as great as it is, doesn't come close to equaling much less besting Breaking Bad. amazing show; meh finish. this is what usually happens with these shows, and it's the very reason that BB is so singularly amazing.

Well I was behind the whole time since I decided to rewatch seasons one through five in their entirety but caught all the way up tonight.  Damn that was a rough ending.  I know it was supposed to be feel good but shit.  BB had a much more fulfilling end as Walt left us, big ass smile on his face.

In my current rewatch, Half Measures probably has been my favorite episode so far by a mile.  And as much as I am not a fan of the character Skyler-the-Wet-Blanket, she lays something on Walt at the beginning of Season 2 that approaches Edie Falco on the Sopranos level (not at that level, but approaching).

On my first watch, I got so wrapped up in Walter's character that it was low-key anxiety inducing, as if his problems were my problems.  I didn't love Hank because he reminded me of a friend of mine's dickhead brother.  This time around, I don't like Walter much, and I love Hank.  Mike is the absolute best though.

The “I broke my boy” monologue in Better Call Saul is better. Banks should have won an Emmy that season. He was absolutely  robbed.

And after you do, watch the version with the Curb You Enthusiasm Theme at the end of the clip. Still gets a chuckle out of me.

His motivation for choosing life in prison, as opposed to getting out in his mid-50s (and playing golf while eating ice cream), is still unclear to me.

Remember back to when Kim first broke things off with Saul.  Kim was done with the lying and scamming.  In her heart, she wanted to help people, not hurt them.  Hamlin dying set her over the edge.  She told Jimmy that she couldn't be with him anymore because he was what he was.

When he heard what Kim had done (confession), he realized the game was over.  He had been harboring delusions that he could work things out with Kim within the parameters of the game up to that point.  He loves Kim and realized there was only one path to redemption in her eyes.  To become the honest man that she yearned for.  He sacrificed his frredom to win her love and respect.

***

That finally was awesome.  Excellent use of flashbacks with cameos to round out the story.  Nothing gratuitous.

That is being pretty generous to Kim, who was the driver in eventually getting Howard executed by Lalo.  But I do think you nailed the rest of it.

Good points. I feel that Saul could have found a method to save Kim and found something a bit better than 86 years. However as some pointed out, Jimmy might like life in prison. With his legal background he could very well have a relatively decently life there compared to other prisoners.

I assume that in leaving her boring job, Kim also left her boring husband. Did I miss anything that confirmed that?

Finale and whole series was brilliant.

Saul was Jimmy's prison. He went full Saul (as we knew him in BB) once Kim left. Created some over the top personality and never had another meaningful relationship. He is now at peace in prison. Never has to worry about his past catching up with him or getting caught. Even if he got the 7 years and got out, then what? He served fed time and his job prospects would be next to none. Everyone he cared about is dead or moved on from that life. He's not going to be relocated under a fake identity as he doesn't need to now. Everywhere he goes, shit ends up bad and he hurts people. He was done with that.

He made good with Kim, had one last smoke with her and now can sleep well knowing he made right with her, the only person left he cared about. That was worth it to him and why he took life in prison in my eyes. I think he gamed the system because he wanted to prove he still could.

Also, I do not think Gus/Lalo prequels would be that interesting as it would be your typical rags to riches mob/cartel stories. Those have been done to death. I think this was a great ending to this world that started last decade. We know the back stories of mostly every character and the 2 series plus the El Camino wrapped everyone up. We know Skylar got her deal so that is wrapped up.

Bittersweet as its all over with as I got into BB in Season 3 in 2010 and been watching that and BCS in real time.

Agree with most of your analysis but think back to when Jimmy's license was suspended. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him because it forced him to be resourceful enough to sell burner phones to Albuquerque's most upstanding residents, which later became his lucrative client base.

It's safe to say Jimmy has the street smarts and cred to thrive behind bars, he would have done just fine after his release even with a conviction on his record. Think of all the wannabe Saul Goodmans he inspired that would gladly pay him a "consulting" fee just for the mentorship.

Of everyone left Kim is the only one that could be a great Gilligan sequel spin off. Rhea may be done with Kim though. I would watch anything with Kim Wexler as a character, and anything with Rhea Seehorn as an actress, including MILF porn.

Yes that's true but at that point, he seemed done with it all. Jimmy to Saul to Gene had played its course and he was done with it. It wasn't worth it to him anymore. He wan ted to make right with Kim and live a life without having to worry about being outed and caught. He got bored in Omaha and started to pull scams like he did with Slippin Jimmy. It has to take a lot of energy to live a life like he did, money and connects made be damned. He can now be comfortable in prison for the remainder of his days,

I don't know if he can ever truly leave "Slippin' Jimmy" behind. Harmless pranks, small time cons. Marco. He cherishes that. Pulling one over on the department store.

It's when you get to the point of drugging strangers and stealing their identities that you eventually need to be willing to bash someone over the head with an urn or strangle a sweet old lady, that's something only Saul would have done but was beyond the pale for Slippin' Jimmy.

They could have had Jimmy and Kim smoking a cigarette against a wall anywhere. No need to speculate anyway. In the Sepinwall interview, Gould explicitly revealed how the idea for the ending began:

Quote

"What we started realizing was that the right ending for Saul was for him to be in the justice system, as a suspect and ultimately a convict, rather than a lawyer. This guy has lived in the justice system, he’s made a farce of it, he’s played it. And it just felt like that was the right place to end the series: him behind bars. But that was pretty much all we had back then."

Quote

why BB has what is generally considered to be the greatest conclusion/finale of the great modern dramas.

Based on...? If this is the case, why does a faction of the fans want to believe Granite State is the de facto ending, while Felina was a dream sequence? It's because the end was too tidy, too perfect, too fan-servicey.  I love Breaking Bad, but nice guy Vince tried a little too hard to please everybody with the BB finale. Walter White going out Rambo style in a blaze of glory on his own terms...sure, it was cool. Sorry, not the greatest ending evarrrr.

Saul Gone > Felina.

Oh, and "Made in America" runs laps around them both.

Used to be wrapping up things clearly and without confusion was how you ended a TV show, regardless of what happened to the characters.  Then a screen went to black suddenly and douchebags started running around using the phrase 'fan service' whenever a show didn't end in total confusion or made any sense.  Oh, there was a definite ending?  Fan service!  Oh, you understand the finale?  Fan service!

Fucking douchebags.

Based on the fictional world created by Gilligan/Gould, they showed he was very respected in there. He will be just fine for his remaining days. He had nothing left on the outside and his life would never be fulfilling.

Exactly. He's not going to live in there fearing for his safety. Quite the opposite. He will have any protection he needs and never has to worry about anything. His name carried weight by the corny chant done on the bus. Now he did not know this would be the case before making this deal. But once he hears Kim confessed, he wanted to do the same and gain her respect (or at least try). He came to a fork in the road on how to live his remaining life. Game the system, get 7 years and get out and do the whole scam routine and still living with the fact Kim wants nothing to do with him. Or do the noble thing in his eyes and get Kim's acceptance and be done with it all. He chose the latter and looked at peace in the final scene as she walked off. I interpreted it as their final time they would ever see each other. Jimmy can die in peace with how it ended with him.

There are a million paths to redemption.  Going to Fed prison until the end of your days to gain the respect of the woman you love is not an optimal one.

I'd have preferred they ended the series with a drone shot of Saul executing a drive down the fairway of the course on that cush prison he negotiated, and we can let our imaginations decide what became of him after his seven years were up.

Was thinking today; you can't shoehorn in every character and whatnot, but it would have been nice to have a minute or two with the vet and Saul doing their transaction for the black book.  To have the book shown being removed in the first episode of this season, and for Caldera to make the statement he did a few episodes later that he was getting out of the game and it would be for sale...that needed a bit of closure.

We know the end result, but what was the asking price?   There had to be some sort of explanation what the vacuum guy's business card meant, and the passphrase.  How about explaining the hieroglyphics?

Alas.

You seem kinda upset with the above “fuckers,” so maybe I’m missing the point, but I watched and saw an in color scene in which Kim signed divorce papers in Saul’s office, was given the brush off by Saul, then proceeded to have a long, rainy/smoky  conversation with Pinkman in front of the practice. This was all before Florida.

But yes, I agree she wasn’t married to the Yep asshole: at the end of one of the many banal days following an unsatisfying interaction, he hopped in his vehicle and presumably drove back to his place (but first securing a date to the new Outback Steakhouse).
