If we win 7 games, Kelvin Banks is gone but the moment we win our 8th game, Banks will pledge his allegiance to the 40 acres forever via social media.

You can be hyperbolic all you like, but if we have a poor season, Kelvin could leave.

anyone could leave, they could leave if Texas wins 10. Kelvin is more likely staying if Texas wins 6-7, because he is more likely to start in that scenario. Go undefeated and that probably means Karic locked down the job and Banks never sees the field. He is a bigger transfer risk now. So should we root for 8-9 games to be safe?

I think the Kool Aid pumpers are all geeking out on war porn in the Ukraine thread.

I guess we root for an undefeated season in which Karic nevertheless plays poorly?

I am worried that neither Sarkisian nor that OL class survive here long enough to benefit us given the portal. Knowing our luck they all bust and then portal to ride the bench in Nacogdoches.

Sark chose not to improve our O-line & LBs last year through the portal, and that more than anything else, led to a 5-win season.
He has made no effort to rectify that mistake so far this offseason. I sincerely hope he proves me wrong, but for some surreal reason, he (wrongly) has confidence in the crap show we will roll out as starters at these position groups.
I would like to believe someone who coached at Bama and had a brief stint in the NFL (talking about Flood here, but Sark as well) knows O-line talent when they see it. Maybe no sure-fire upgrade that would realistically come here hit the portal? Idk man, but willing to let it play out and see what happens.

LB is puzzling, I'll give you that. If our D shits the bed again and PK isnt fired, thats how we know Sark joins the 3 and out club.

They didn't want to play two deep safeties.  The pass rush was so bad and their safeties were so bad in coverage that they were terrified about getting beat over the top.  PK's defense has always featured Cover 3 with one high safety and minimal blitzing when he has the correct personnel.  If you have to bring 5 or 6 on any given play to have any shot at pressuring the QB, you're going to get picked apart in the Big 12.

I’ll take your word on wanting Cover 3. I don’t/won’t dispute that. I have no idea.

There were quite a few plays, seemingly against OSU and BU, in which we made tackles within 1 yard past the sticks on a pass play. If we are in Cover 2, that is infuriating. In cover 2, if those safeties are deep, then I’d want my corners to be very aggressive in front of the sticks especially knowing my defense is suspect. On 3rd and 5, giving up 6 yards is worse than 15 in my opinion.

Our safeties were not beat over the top much in the pass game. I’m not sure what their pass skills are truth be told. Foster made a couple of nice picks. Think Schooler had 4 picks as a frosh at Oregon. Both those guys are better athletes than given credit for. They did not play like it though.

Our pass rush is not good so I’m there with you. Blitzing doesn’t really get there either. As I was on board with bringing on the big frosh Oline class, I feel the same on the Dline/Edge. Even with Ossai, we weren’t any good. People can whine about not bringing in ILBs, but it starts with playmakers upfront. Then the next thing we need is tackling out of the safeties.

I think when you have a shitty defense, you need to play for negative plays and turnovers. I hate the speed bump defense with a bad defense. Personally, I think you can get away with being conservative when you have talent. When you dont, you should play aggressive.

Agreed. Especially if you can score some points.

Oh, if I thought there was any prayer of it, I’d love for him to be fired. But he’s going to be here for 4 years, so it’s pointless. I’ll hope to be wrong and cheer for the team and mock the pollyannas in the run up to the next search that Texas fucks up for its HFC.

Reminders for practice reports today:

1) Omit any mentions of Card, @BurntOrange&White gets upset when he sees his name

2) Anything positive mentioned about a defensive player is sunshine and should not be believed

3) Anything positive mentioned about the offensive line is sunshine and should not be believed. Our 5 guys couldn't start at St. Edwards.

4) Anything positive mentioned about the defensive line is because of the offensive line

5) Anything positive mentioned about the punter or kicker is because they aren't in a live game environment and shouldn't be believed

6) Anything positive mentioned about the linebackers is because they know our offensive playbook and shouldn't be believed

7) Anything mentioned about Bijan or Worthy can be believed.

Am I missing anything?

See - you're catching on.

IT practice notes from today

Quote

-Since the team isn’t in full pads yet, most of the information we gather comes from passing drills, 7-on-7, and 11-0on-11. That’s why there’s going to be more information about wide receivers and defensive backs at this stage.

-Overall, the defensive backs had a better day than their offensive counterparts, both receivers and quarterbacks. The passing offense was not as crisp today. As a result, the defensive backs won the day.

-One bright spot on offense was Isaiah Neyor. He had an active day and saw first- and second-string snaps after beginning as a third-stringer on Tuesday. He worked mainly at X but did move around some. Neyor at X means Xavier Worthy at Z. Worthy also moved around some.

–Casey Cain is faster and has improved his game. His main issue is Neyor is in front of him, but that will work in Cain’s favor because it will aid in his development. He’ll have a good example to follow in the Wyoming transfer.

–Ja’Tavion Sanders had a few possession receptions today starting from an attached position. When he was targeted, the former five-star hauled the ball in.

-A few notes on freshman cornerbacks: Jaylon Guilbeau stood out today, picking off Quinn Ewers in an 11-on-11 portion of practice. He also deflected several passes. Everyone rotated in at cornerback, meaning Guilbeau received reps with the ones and the twos. The same goes for Terrance Brooks. He had a solid Thursday practice, though maybe not quite as good as his first practice on Tuesday. Brooks is performing well in 7-on-7 and in 11-on-11. He plays with physicality, but had a couple of minor miscues today that were nothing to worry about.

-Other defensive back notes: JD Coffey looked really good today. Coffey and Jerrin Thompson are going to have a knock-down, drag-out competition. Coffey had an interception today on a deep post. We’re not sure who threw it but are working to find out.

-Thompson is competing with Coffey at safety because of the strong sentiment that Jahdae Barron will be the starting nickel. Still a long way to go there, but the battle is trending in Barron’s favor.

–Jaylan Ford jumped in the mix in pass defense. He had interceptions in both the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 portions of practice. One came via a tipped ball, the other a result of him jumping a short route.

-Not a whole lot to report on the offensive or defensive lines. The D-line looks good in pursuit. They might be a little faster and playing with more effort, but not there’s not much else to takeaway along both lines.

When you are dealing with young people when you get into a death spiral things just have a hard time getting worked out.  There is a timeline last year where we hold onto the OU game and win by 3 TD's, as it looked like we were well on our way to doing, the team is confident, poised and relaxed and we win- oh- I don't know maybe 9 games and the season seems like a big success.

I'm going to just flush Kansas out of my mind and chalk that up to- shit got borked and we weren't good enough to fix it.  That is a plausible read.

I think that your take is probably more likely than not to be right, but this is all a probabilistic endeavor where we only have 12 data points and they are binary.  You are talking in absolutes when you should be talking in probabilities.  I compared it to a straight draw with 8 or so outs-  you are talking about something like a 1 in 5 chance at winning 10+ games with this team. Then- there's probably a 2/5 chance that we win 7-9 games and a 2-5 chance we are 500 or below.  You acting like there is no ceiling to this team and nothing can go right. That's not true.  And it's also not wildly implausible.

There are far more than 12 data points on Steve Sarkisian. He’s got 93 games as a HC for goodness sakes.

Do you have any actual conclusions to draw from his last two stops?  Have you watched any of his games prior to last year as a head coach? Or is this just the same "Seven Win Steve" trope, yet again.

In those 93 games, Sarkisian has never won when being down at halftime.

Shoot me for looking at it positively. I’d like to have more thrown right to us.

The Arkansas one was a very nice play. Baylor he actually had to move some.

I’ve had enough positive talk about Foster. Wait, the fact that he’s gone is the most positive thing I can think of and where the positivity surrounding him should end.

From his last two stops?

Bama-Saban is the reason for all of the success. He has won NC’s with several different OC’s.

In Atlanta, Sark’s offense was so bad he got fired. After 1 season.

Did I watch games when he was a HC before? Yes. I watched some USC games where he was the coach. He didn’t impress me, but in his “defense”, he was drunk a lot of the time.

Wtf is with all the negativity.  If Ewers is legit this offense will be fucking badass.  Shit, the offensive depth chart reported features NINE guys with starting experience.  Same for defense.  If our QB and coaches are worth a runny fuck this is a 10+ win team.

10 wins is our floor.

I have 5 kids. One has been raised successfully to adulthood with a career, husband and kid on the way. They've all played sports throughout and I've coached them many times as the head guy or assistant. Been a spectator plenty too. Believe it or not, I'm considered a nice guy out there and the kids like me. But I laughed at the GIF and the notion of my Internet persona.

I'm obviously more optimistic than you (hell- Kevorkian probably is) about Seven Win Steve leveling up and becoming 10 win Steve next year- but if you are right about everything this may be the most negative thing you've posted. If he shits the bed again he needs to be gone after next year. We need to be decisive when it becomes clear a guy doesn't have it.  4 years in a tailspin would be bad. Really bad.  Do not want.

Dude, there is almost no way, short of bad personal stuff, that Sarkisian isn't at Texas for 4 years. Almost no way.

Didn’t CTJ say that Bama was going to chortle my balls one year, then they went on to win the title? I’ll take his hot takes with a grain of salt. We’re going 9-3 next year. Anything short of that is very disappointing given the schedule.

I predicted their failing season to be something like 12-2 and no CFP appearance because of staff and roster turnover. Whoops. Outside of the thread title, which was meant for clickbait, it wasn't like I was expecting Saban to go 5-7 and lose to Kansas.

It really shouldn’t be that hard to figure out.

Returning a bunch of starters from a terrible defense isn’t exactly a great thing, and if our coaches were worth a runny fuck last year, that team would’ve easily won more than 5 games.

@Snake Diggity is a good poster, but he's an obsessive list guy. He thoroughly falls in love with roster maneuverings. I assume he's an accountant, engineer, or actuary by trade. So he's going to fall into the "experience" trap every now and then.

The more I read on this site, the more I realize that most of the posters do not truly understand the game.

Coaching a youth sport doesn't make you some sort of savant about said children's game that can judge the plebes with indignance.

Karic is a placeholder for Banks. It won't be a competition. Banks is the day 1 starter. Folks here may not like that, but tough shit. I confirmed that as the plan with someone who knows earlier today. There will be 3 freshman starters by mid-October on the OL barring some really crazy development otherwise.

Are you under some sort of illusion that it's difficult to have an understanding of Sarkisian as a coach for those of us on this board who watch and discuss football religiously? It seems that way. Everyone here barring a few exceptions have watched the guy for many years. There are handles on this thread that were discussing Sarkisian as a coach at length on both Hornfans and then Shaggy, well over a decade ago. Get a fucking grip.

Oh, and btw, the notion that going further back into Sarkisian's career beyond last year offers some sort of better insight to who he is as a head coach is selective reasoning at its finest. "Hey guys, nevermind all of the latest shit we've seen from this guy. Let's go back to 2014 and beyond in order to really get a feel for this wunderkind at the helm." It's a fucking awful take, but it is laugh out loud hilarious, I'll give you credit for that.

Also, there may not be a more pointless stat than a coaches record when trailing at the half. I saw some stat a while back that Bill Belichick is like 4-22 when trailing at the half the last 5 years and laughed. The NFL win percentage if you are trailing at the half is 26% and I bet it's even lower than that in college. It shouldn't shock anyone that teams and coaches who get outperformed in a first half of the game have a 75-80% chance of also getting outperformed in the second half.

I will take all bets from any poster who wants to take the side of 10+ wins for any dollar amount. I'll take the under. Just line up and name the number and we're good. Thanks.

Done.

10 wins. Any and all post season wins count towards the number.

I’ll be around to pay up but if there needs to be some sort of good faith effort, let me know.

Now layer that over what Sarkisian did last year with a halftime lead and defend it.

Oh, I agree. 5-4 record with leads at the half is terrible. Just pointing out that a coaches record when trailing at the half is a weird stat to look at when there are much bigger red flags.
