Well guess I’m going to get my Twitter info on this thread for awhile as the DT one has gone to shit…same handful of posters in a frenzy throwing out woke memes, pummeling Eddie on his argument against shadow banning and jerking each other off.

Took a peek.  Repeating as always but the group that cries the most about getting political, well, you know.  That's the second time lately I've noticed Cajun not being the poster I recall him as being from the other site.

Covid seriously ruined some posters who used to be perfectly normal people. Cajun and MNLonghorn are two of the most obvious.

Given the gnashing of teeth, I can seem the legacy twitter folks seeking to unleash chaos before the deal closes. Petty but not surprising. Capt. Obvious, but I think no one except bad actors would oppose getting the bots executed.

Speaking of disinformation, I came across this fascinating story about how people use social media to fan it. I definitely came across my fair share of fake "experts" but this seems to take it up a notch by the use of classic Instagram influencer. In fairness, no idea who is the author, so take it with a grain of salt I suppose.

“If [Twitter] does not comply with our law, there are sanctions — 6 per cent of the revenue and, if they continue, banned from operating in Europe,” he added.

This is pretty interesting.  As some of y'all know, my Twitter feed has 90,000 followers.  Everyday I get an average of 110-140 new followers. At any given time I can look at the list of most recent followers. Usually, if I mouse over the profile of each new follower, I'll have a wide diversity. Some will have had their twitter accounts for 10 years, some six, some two or whatever. They will also have a wide disparity in followers, of course.

Since the announcement that Musk is buying Twitter, I've been flooded with new followers and most of them are bots. This first shot shows my most recent followers. Many of them are bots.  How do I know? They all got their accounts this month, they are all following between 10-75 accounts (right now), and they have not tweeted at all (or maybe just one tweet). Example: MrFisherman, Marcie Crow, Nicole Naumann, and probably luis garcia are bots.

If you look at the second, third and fourth photos, you'll see the accounts that MrFisherman, Marcie Crow, and Nicole Naumann --- who all just got twitter accounts ---- are following. I am at the top, naturally, because I just got the message that these accounts are following me. But check out the rest of the folks these accounts are following:  Lauren Boebert, Chuck Woolery, Dinesh D'Souza, Donald Trump Jr. etc..

There is absolutely no question that these are bots. My guess is that they're being planted and either won't tweet at all or will be used to retweet Boebert, Woolery etc...

What's interesting is that I don't see any move by the Democrats/liberals to counter this.  I'm not seeing legions of new followers that, when I check who they are following, I see AOC, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden etc...

That's why I think it's interesting that Elon says he's going to defeat bots. It will be great if he manages to do it.

Again, the first image shows my most recent followers. The next three show who some of my new followers are following. Between them, neither MrFisherman, Marcie or Nicole have a single tweet and all three got their twitter accounts yesterday (I'm guessing).

Great input. Thanks for sharing and you’re a great follow. If you see a tweet I shared earlier there was a breakdown of how a lot of left leaning sites lost followers simultaneously in pretty substantial numbers. I don’t believe that many left leaning accounts quit the day of Elon sale announcement.  Maybe it’s some kind of bot rebalancing? I don’t know why you would have bots switch sides though.

I hope you keep sharing your view from the side of a highly followed account. I don’t think this is the last strange change we will see happen with Twitter.

You think bots switch sides? Why do you think that this sudden shift in followers isn’t part of the same game plan?

I also think it’s pretty likely that Twitter offices in some form move to Texas. That is awesome obviously for us. Gavin Newsome and California Dems have been such a gift to our state. They made it unbearable to live and work in such a beautiful state as California. Unbelievable.

We’ll look back in 10-20 years and be amazed at what a windfall they gave us by pushing so much industry away. Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter just from the Elon sphere. Add all the other business not linked to Elon.

yes, hopefully mississippi, arkansas, and oklahoma continue to help us keep the lights on out here. 🙏🏻

Is this the part where you tell us about stolen elections?

Uh, you’re definitely barking up the wrong tree. My point was bots do what botnet owners tell them to. And just because there’s this new surge of RW followers doesn’t mean it shows some change of heart on the part of those owners. If a foreign actor is sowing discord through social media, this is just a new phase of the same game plan. Twitter was fairly active in knocking down disinformation so the bots had to be a little more subtle. Now that Elon is saying that those shackles are coming off, the bots can go back to signal boosting the crazies.

To expand on this now that I’ve had some coffee, this is a simple trap for Elon’s free speech rhetoric. How do you filter people from bots? Twitter was filtering speech that caught bots and people, but the goal was to stop disinformation, so baby with the bath water and all that. Elon wants to avoid infringing on people, which I think he will find is close to impossible. Plenty of people repeat the same shit bots are saying (see yesterdays ivermectin trend). So he can’t do a simple filter on “ivermectin works” because he will catch plenty of people in the same dragnet.

He is going to find it extremely hard to filter bots without targeting speech. Any smart bot operator will intentionally include “live” accounts that mirror their bots so they can cry foul when the filter pulls based on metrics. The idea of validating people based on anything technical is laughable. They aren’t going to verify accounts via IP, because that’s easy to defeat, and not everyone gets a public IP anyway. Elon’s baby Starlink runs on CGNAT for fucks sake. It’s also difficult to imagine them using govt IDs considering the global footprint of Twitter.

It's going to be fun watching imma and BL try to figure out how to moderate the DT thread once musk starts to champion "hunter bidens laptop is legit", because I'd really like to see hear why they think guliani is a reliable witness and makes it acceptable to overlook the multitude of holes in the story

BL won’t care until a CR poster goes in and posts actual facts to refute their nonsense.

Hmm, seems that elon is just using the twitter thing to continue grifting right wing internet dipshits, just like he did with bitcoin. And as someone pointed out in another thread, the bots make twitter seem more "active' than it really is and so make it more valuable, so look for that to increase.

Since he’s taking it private he doesn’t really “need” bots to simulate activity and therefore maintain the valuation of the company unless he finds it’s needed to maintain ad rates. That was mostly ignored to help maintain the valuation for public investors. He won’t have any obligation to report any such metrics.

You don’t think ad buyers will want verifiable metrics on their ad buys?

Unless he likes throwing money away, bots are still a large part of Twitters ad revenue. He can certainly be truthful with ad buyers and explain why their metrics are down 30+%, but that truth is still going to cost them revenue. It will be interesting how Elon can simultaneously kill bots, nerf the algorithm and likely reduce traffic, and somehow grow Twitter’s revenue so he can get ROI.

Do you have people say that they hate Californians out there too?

Sure.  But they tend to be more vocal on the internet while in person gladly accepting all the money brought to them by those same ex-Californians.  Hatred of a generic 'type' is easy.  But not sure what this had to do with my little attempt at humor.

I'm rooting for Musk to make Twitter better, specifically the bot issue and profitability, but those seems to work against each other. I just don't think he understands free speech whatsoever and should stop pretending this is about free speech.

There's also the problem of what is protected free speech in this country like posing in nazi symbolism is explicitly illegal in other nations like Germany or Poland. Twitter is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than just the US and has to abide by the law of each of the countries it wants to do business in.

I don't think there's even a remote possibility that he makes Twitter better for anyone but Elon stans and the alt-right, so I'm rooting for him to fuck it up horribly and cost himself tens of billions of dollars in the process.

The removal of anonymous accounts has also been floated but removing anonymity will kill off a lot of popular accounts. It will also harm political activists in other countries as well as our own.

Hell, he doesn't even have to remove anonymous accounts. Elon outing anonymous Chinese dissidents to the CCP is almost guaranteed.
