MLB umpiring thread

Can't believe there is nothing in here from cards yanks today. Home plate ump was horrible. Boone got tossed and marmot just kind of sat there and smiled because he knew he was right. Then ump takes a 101mph fastball on a foul tip to the forehead and yadi had to grab him and hold him up to keep him from going down. He was 100% out on his feet. He tried to hand a new ball to the batter.

Fucker stayed in the game and he was still just as shitty. Hopefully jomboy does a breakdown.

Jomboy's breakdown makes a pretty compelling case that this was a textbook play by Sanchez.

Yea how he broke it down and showed Sanchez setting up out of the lane and then drifting to catch it seems to makes it allowable by the way the rule reads.

You don’t see infielders throwing their knees or feet down directly in front of the bag when they need to tag out a runner. With collisions out of the game, there’s no real reason for catchers to be doing that anymore. I actually think it’s good that the rule is being enforced now.

lololol, pujols just struck out looking on a terrible call vs a kid making his major league debut. i guess it's bizarro world day at wrigley.

I think this is a case where the pitch zone graphic is incorrect. That might have been a ball but it was way closer than the graphic showed.

Umpire Angel Hernandez responded to Major League Baseball in court Wednesday as part of his long-running discrimination lawsuit, accusing the league of a “hit piece” and “ad hominem attacks” for pointing out his three overturned calls in Game 3 of the 2018 divisional playoffs.

His reasoning is that those calls occurred after the 2011-17 period in which Hernandez is claiming MLB discriminated against him by not promoting him to crew chief or giving him World Series assignments.

“MLB is once again showing its true colors, and inadvertently demonstrating the veracity of Hernandez’s allegations against it, by selectively choosing ‘isolated incidents’ to demean Hernandez while it has repeatedly avoided doing so for the non-minority umpires it considered for crew chief and World Series assignments during the relevant time period,” the umpire’s filing states as part of his appeal to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

“MLB’s Brief continues its troubling pattern of distorting Hernandez’s on-field performance, caricaturing it as inferior to the performance of his non-minority colleagues.”

A federal district court judge earlier this year tossed Hernandez’s discrimination lawsuit, in part because he found the umpire pool too small to deduce statistically whether the league discriminates in its umpire hiring practices. In August, MLB underscored the 2018 blown calls in its response to Hernandez’s appeal to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

The umpire does not address those calls in the reply motion filed Wednesday, other than stating they “are not even accurate descriptions of what happened.” But he does answer another strike called against him by MLB. In 2013, he failed to overturn a replay review of a double in an Oakland-Cleveland game in which the ball was seen as hitting the railing over the wall for what should have been a home run.

“For years, Hernandez has refused to admit that the call he made was incorrect and instead has attempted to blame the quality of the replay equipment,” MLB wrote in its Aug. 31 reply. “Hernandez’s inability to put the Cleveland incident behind him — and his continued insistence that others were at fault for his wrong decision — was emblematic of why [then chief baseball officer Joe] Torre considered him to be unsuitable for World Series assignments and a permanent crew chief role. The issue was not the bad call itself, but Hernandez’s reaction to his mistake.”

In his reply, Hernandez wrote that, at the time, the umpires only had access to a small analog monitor in a broom closet at the stadium, inferior to what was available on the broadcast. The two videos the umpires saw showed one with the ball above the railing and one hitting the wall, the brief stated, meaning the call on the field stood.

“MLB likewise chose not to defend Hernandez or explain why Hernandez was unable to reverse the call on the field per MLB’s own rules,” the umpire argued. “But when an incorrect call was made by a white umpire two years before this 2013 Cleveland game, MLB jumped to defend him, issuing a public statement regarding that umpire’s integrity.”

Hernandez does not identify the White umpire.

The reply brief also addressed another incident MLB raised, when in 2012 Hernandez arranged for pitcher Homer Bailey to autograph baseballs following Bailey’s no-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds. Hernandez argued it was common practice at the time for players to autograph baseballs for the ump and crew.

When Hernandez filed his lawsuit in 2017, the league had only had one minority crew chief in its 150-year history. Since Hernandez filed the lawsuit, MLB has promoted one African American umpire and two Hispanic umpires to crew chief.

That's a pretty weak balk call but at the same time when the ump tells you why he called it then you do the exact same thing two more times in a row you're basically asking him to keep calling it.

Much better reaction would have been to hold the set position for 10 seconds while staring directly at the ump the entire time.

Automate balls and strikes.  Fuck the human element.

Maybe it’s off season vacation get away day … but, Bill Miller was ridiculous in today’s Toronto-Baltimore game.

Twice he called third strikes .. once against each team .. that overhead camera angles showed the ball directly over a batter’s box chalk line.  Jim Palmer suggested if Miller was that ready to get home, he should leave early because no one would notice.

Rosenberg has been called up from Triple-A for 39 regular-season MLB games between 2020 and 2022, according to retrosheet.org. Crew chief Dan Iassogna defended Rosenberg's decision to the Inquirer after the game.

"Did Randy act hastily? No," Iassogna said. "I believe Randy felt like the situation warranted an ejection, and that's what he did."
