OU is having trouble raising NIL funds and with his father at ND this shouldn't be too big a worry. Anybody familiar with NDs NIL and/or ease of transfer?

Bobby was saying this kid is from the midwest.. looking at tosu but probably follows his dad/brother to ND

I’m upset.  We’ve been in the wild west of portal season for twelve whole hours and nothing interesting has happened yet.  I was told there would be chaos.  I want to see Colorado’s entire two-deep enter the portal.  I want A&M’s QB room to transfer to Wyoming.  I want to see some DIII school pay Georgia’s 5th string linebacker a million dollars to destroy lesser players.

It’s my portal season and I want it NOW!

Holy shit immamac, this is genius in multiple ways. Not only is it a great gag, it’s tremendously good marketing for surlyhorns. And it’s a great example of good NIL. Well done. And eff you.

So what's everybody's opinion on who/how many on this list need to transfer to really decimate their program where they can't even get to their usual 8-4 season.  I don't think someone like Nolen (or any DL for that matter) deciding to transfer would really hurt them because they are so deep with all those DL men from the last class.  Obviously Weigman would be crushing but I don't see it happening.  Would love for Stewart to bolt but we shall see.

How many to decimate their program? 10%.

Burton mentioned today that he's hearing BJ Allen is already well over 210 pounds and there's some questions as to whether he is going to stick in a traditional safety role long term (for reference, Cook and Jerrin Thompson both played at around 185-188 this year). Said that news emphasizes the need to get a starting safety from the portal even more.

They are really thin at Edge, RB, WR and already lost a few.

OL and DL are their healthiest positions, and they probably need to thin them out anyway.

Then what are we guessing his long-term position will be? He's too short to be a LB. And idk about playing the dude in a "nontraditional" safety role. Seems like it'd be easier just to play a different dude who fits the role more cleanly for continuity. Jesus, tf did the dude do? The dude was listed at 185 as a recruit and he's gained 30-35+ pounds?

The bigger red flag to me is that he's one of like four freshmen that didn't play a snap this year. I think the others were Maalik, Trevell Johnson, and Derrick Brown.

I saw it mentioned a few weeks ago that the reason he didn’t play was because he had a non-football injury.

According to Bobby Burton a few weeks ago, BJ Allen had a non-football related injury earlier this year that set him back... Bobby did not disclose what the injury was or how it occurred because he felt it wasn't his place to share.  Also said coaches were still upbeat about BJ Allen's future...

Being up to 210lbs is surprising to hear about Allen though...

Portal Overview from Hudson

Spoiler

The Transfer Portal winter window is officially open and the action has been heating up as over 600 FBS players have already entered the portal with hundreds more making their intentions to transfer before entering their name known.

Texas was a major player in the portal last season with starters Quinn Ewers and Ryan Watts making their way from Ohio State, along with a host of other talented prospects including Wyoming's Isaiah Neyor who was a projected starter before suffering a season-ending knee injury in fall camp.

The Longhorns will continue to be active in the portal this offseason and Horns247 Transfer Portal Central is the place to follow all the action. Tidbits on players expected to enter or leave the portal, sourced NIL updates, new articles with intel surrounding the portal, and much more will be consistently added in the moderators only comments and article itself to provide an easy chronological rundown of the Longhorns portal efforts.

There are also multiple new key features regarding the Transfer Portal including the introduction of Transfer Portal Windows and the removal of the 25 initial counter limit, as 247Sports' Chris Hummer mentioned in his 'Mass Chaos' FBS staffer survey.

"This is the first cycle with transfer portal windows, which stretch from Dec. 5 to January 18 for the FBS with another period from April 15-30. No longer can players enter the portal whenever they please, though there are always exceptions to the rules. Graduate transfers and players whose head coaches have left the program are not subjected to these guidelines, which is why athletes have already started entering the portal.

Schools are no longer limited to signing just 25 initial counters per cycle. This means programs can aggressively rework their rosters to sign up to their 85-scholarship limit. Many across the country believe that this will lead to players being run off rosters. The NCAA also passed a rule that schools are required to keep transfer athletes on scholarship through the completion of their eligibility clock or until they complete their undergraduate degree. This means there’s more risk than ever in taking an undergraduate transfer, because they’re stuck on the roster no matter what."

QUARTERBACK
State of the position: The Texas quarterback room remains in a bit of flux, but Quinn Ewers should have a hold on the job despite his ups and downs. Hudson Card entered his name into the transfer portal, and he should be one of the more heavily pursued players at his position. The Longhorns will get five-star quarterback Arch Manning on campus in January to start his career, while Maalik Murphy and Charles Wright return. Ewers must take a step forward in the spring, but the quarterback room is in good health.

Portal need (0): There doesn’t appear to be a need for additional bodies in the portal, but that could change if there were any unexpected attrition. The Texas roster won’t be attractive for quarterbacks given the presence of Ewers and Manning, but if needed, they could attract a depth quarterback looking for a chance and an opportunity at a Texas graduate degree. Overall, we don’t see them exploring the portal at this position.

RUNNING BACK

State of the position: Star running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson are likely headed to the NFL after an ultra-productive final year in Austin, but leave the running back room in good health with Jonathon Brooks and Jaydon Blue expected to return and Keilan Robinson’s status in question. The No. 29 overall player in the nation Cedric Baxter will be an instant impact player for the Horns and plans to early enroll at Texas in January. DeSoto all-purpose back Tre Wisner will add to the depth in the running back room and has shown promise at slot receiver this year for the Eagles.

Portal need (0/1): Unless there is a surprise outgoing transfer I’m not sure Texas needs to attack running back in the transfer portal. Sources feel confident that Baxter will be a significant contributor in the backfield by committee next season and Brooks has earned snaps by his spot play in multiple games this season. Robinson is an electric player that could be set for an increase in touches upon return, but if he does leave the program Blue could field a similar role for the offense.

WIDE RECEIVER
State of the position: The Longhorns have some playmakers at receiver, but they struggled to diversify the attack outside of Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington last season. Worthy will return for a third year in Austin while Whittington is still weighing his choices. Texas should also get a boost from the return of Isaiah Neyor from injury. Troy Omeire will enter the portal leaving a gap of experience between the young and old players in the room. Savion Red and Brenen Thompson both saw action as freshmen and should be able to take a bigger role. Who knows what the Longhorns will be able to get from Agiye Hall, but Johntay Cook and Ryan Niblett along with any other members of the 2023 class should be ready to play immediately.

Portal need (2/3): This will likely always be an area where the Longhorns look for options to improve the roster and add more playmakers to the offense. I’d expect at least two portal targets to emerge here with the need to find a big body on the outside and more explosive ability to push vertically. I think there is also an element of finding a best player available regardless of a specific fit. We’ve also been told that the staff would be choosy when it comes to this position. We should have a better idea of names when they are officially in the portal, but there are a few guys we’ve got our eyes on that we will talk about more in-depth this week.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Devon Campbell (Photo: © Taylor Estes, 247Sports)
State of the position: The offensive line room is as healthy as it has been in years with a young crop of talent and more coming in the class. Andrej Karic already announced his intentions to make a move, and we could see one or two more names trickle in following bowl practices. Still, Kyle Flood has a talented group of youngsters to develop with another full class incoming. Christian Jones and Junior Angilau will make way for some of the young talent to see more playing time as they leave the program as well. Devon Campbell, Cam Williams and Neto Umeozulu are all guys that will get a great look in the spring and throughout bowl practices.

Portal need (0/1): We were initially told that the offensive line might be a spot for the portal, and we won’t completely rule it out. However, after talking to multiple sources over the last week, Texas seems to feel good enough about the young talent on the roster to move forward with the desire to develop that group. If a potential game-changer comes along, Texas could make a move, but I don’t see them taking a shot at any player who isn’t an obvious upgrade at the position.

TIGHT END
State of the position: For the first time in over a decade the Texas Longhorns have a true receiving threat returning at tight end in former five-star prospect Ja’Tavion Sanders. The Denton Ryan product was expected to be a significant contributor this season and delivered, upping his blocking game while becoming the second receiving option for Ewers and Card. Gunnar Helm was steady as the second tight end in 12 personnel and Juan Davis is an intriguing weapon that continues to improve behind the scenes. Spencer Shannon from the incoming 2023 class is a clear fit at the inline Y position and Manning’s teammate Will Randle will be depth for the room as he recovers from a season-ending knee injury. Five-star tight end Duce Robinson is still in the mix, but we feel Georgia and USC are better situated for the Arizona native.

Portal need (0/1): Unless there is a clear stud in the portal or more attrition than expected I would expect Texas to stay pat at the tight end spot.

DEFENSIVE LINE

(Photo: Tim Warner, Getty)
State of the position: Impact interior defenders Keondre Coburn and Moro Ojomo won’t return for the 2023 season but Texas will bring back a good core with T'Vondre Sweat expected to return along with contributors Byron Murphy, Vernon Broughton, and Alfred Collins. Jaray Bledsoe is a name that could take a significant step forward after showing promise behind the scenes. Sydir Mitchell and Dylan Spencer headline the IDL commits although there is a strong possibility Texas adds to the 2023 class at this spot before National Signing Day.

Portal need (0/1): At defensive line, the early returns from conversations with sources are that Texas plans to only take one potential difference maker but could stay pat if there is limited attrition and positive development from key returners in the spring.

EDGE
State of the position: Barryn Sorrell took a much needed sophomore leap and consistently impacted games from the JACK position adding pass rush production to his already stellar production against the run. Ovie Oghoufo consistently started for the first two years at edge rusher for Pete Kwiatkowski and will need to have his snaps replaced. Justice Finkley played plenty in rotation snaps and will likely see his role expand next season alongside fellow 2022 enrollees Ethan Burke and JMond Tapp who are earning rave reviews behind the scenes. Colton Vasek could potentially compete for playing time as a true freshman while Dallas South Oak Cliff’s Billy Walton will likely stick to a more traditional true freshman developmental track.

Portal need (1/2): Texas will remain active in the portal evaluating all difference-maker options with the caveat that EDGE is one of the tougher spots to find true quality from the portal. This is a position group where Texas could take two if the options are available but likely will settle for the best available.

LINEBACKER

(Photo: © Peter Aiken, Getty)
State of the position: The health of this position could be dependent on whether Jaylan Ford stays for another year or jumps to the NFL. Still, the Longhorns could have a lot of opportunities for playing time even if Ford returns. We still need to see the status of David Gbenda and Jett Bush who would still have some eligibility remaining. Texas has three linebackers in the class and is still chasing Anthony Hill to go along with young linebackers like Derrick Brown and Trevell Johnson.

Portal need (0/1): If the Longhorns get Hill and retain Ford, I could see them moving forward with the guys they have. Still, I think taking one in this portal class would ensure enough depth going into the spring while the staff works on developing the younger players on the roster. The staff has looked into adding players at this position the last two offseasons, so I’d expect any players worth consideration to get a look from this staff.

DEFENSIVE BACK
State of the position: The defensive back position is still in flux with some natural attrition and others headed to the transfer portal. D’Shawn Jamison and Anthony Cook will both move on to the next level while Ryan Watts returns along with young players like Terrance Brooks, Jaylon Guilbeau and Austin Jordan who all saw action this year. The Longhorns will lose JD Coffey and Jamier Johnson to the transfer portal but do what they can to sign Derek Williams early. The five-star prospect should be able to compete for time right away along with returning players like Jerrin Thompson, BJ Allen and several others.

Portal need (1/2): Despite the group of young talent, I’ve been told that Texas will be aggressive when looking for defensive backs. I think the plan is to take one cornerback and one safety to help bridge that gap to the young group. I could even see them taking three if they find the right guys. Of note, we’ve heard one very interesting name who was a highly-regarded target in the 2022 cycle. That player has yet to announce any intentions to enter the portal, but there’s been enough buzz that we are keeping an eye on them.

SPECIALISTS
State of the position: Bert Auburn had a productive first season replacing Cameron Dicker, finishing 19/24 on the year with a season long 49 yarder against Alabama. Daniel Trejo took over punting duties early in the season as a graduate transfer from Texas Wesleyan in his final season of eligibility.

Portal need (1): Early sourcing is that Texas will look to add a punter with proven FBS production out of the portal.

RELEVANT VIP NOTES PRIOR TO THE PORTAL OPENING

(Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)
 Names to know:

JQ Hardaway, DB, Cincinnati

A former Top247 player in the 2022 class, Hardaway chose Cincinnati over offers from Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee and USC. The Under Armour All-American saw time as a freshman recording 8 tackles and a sack. Many members of the Texas staff have already followed the former Phenix City (AL.) Central star in hopes of landing a potential impact player. Hardaway fits the build Steve Sarkisian likes in his cornerback and could fit into the picture immediately.

Avery Helm, CB, Florida

The former Fort Bend Marshall star signed with Florida in the 2020 class and played three years for the Gators. After redshirting in 2020, Helm made 13 career starts in 22 games. During his time in Gainesville, Helm recorded 31 tackles and 4 PBUs. Helm held 23 offers in high school and picked the Gators over offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, TCU and Tennessee. Several members of the Texas staff are following Helm on social media indicating that there may be some interest once his name is officially live.

Dominic Lovett, WR, Missouri

A former Top247 member in the 2021 class, Lovett chose the Tigers over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Oregon and Penn State. Lovett saw action in two years with the Tigers accumulating 82 receptions for 1,019 yards and 3 touchdowns receiving. He also added 11 carries for 46 yards and 1 touchdown. Lovett would fit what Texas is looking for as an explosive big-play threat with multiple years of eligibility left and several staffers are following him on social media.

COMMENTS
Damieon George, OL, Alabama

The former Galena Park North Shore star signed with Kyle Flood out of high school in 2020. He was recruited by Jeff Banks as well, so there are plenty of ties to the Texas staff. During his time in Tuscaloosa, George saw rotational snaps and guard and tackle seeing a few starts. When he initially indicated his intent to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, a source told us he would be a player Texas might have an interest in. After talking with sources over the weekend, we don’t believe there will be much pursuit unless there is some unexpected attrition in that unit. The staff is happy with the current group of talent on campus and the group coming in with the 2023 class.
