Dear Texas, we need to have a conversation about Louie Gohmert

Not only does this Aggy keep getting re-elected, no one has come close to unseating him.

What the fuck is wrong with Texas’ 1st Congressional District?!?

Recent Gohmert news...

Gohmert expressed fear that he might become the target of gun violence similar to that experienced by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and refused to hold public town hall meetings.[20]

Uh, have you seen where the 1st congressional district is located?  No hope.

The awful truth is that there's probably thousands of people in that district who would be so bad at that job, they'd have us longing for the relative sanity and stability of Gohmert.

Texas has an abundance of wide open spaces, whitetail deer, oil, and fucking idiots.

I would point out that the 1st district had an extremely competent rep for nearly a decade in moderate Democrat Max Sandlin until the 2003 redistricting. And they got him out by making the district LESS rural, not more-swapping Tyler and Longview in for the northeast corner of the state.

My native East Texan defensiveness required that.

Hugo you really have nothing better to do on a Wednesday afternoon than start a thread about some dipshit rep from east Texas?

Getting an explanation on the phenomenon that is Louie Gohmert has been an itch I’ve wanted to scratch for a long time.

This might be a possibility, by HUGO himself.

I can't remember the actual Lyman quote from West Wing, but he essentially says that Dems fund-raise off of guys like Louie. They don't try to oppose him in his district and send out a fundraising letter every time he says something crazy. The problem for everyone is that people like that are becoming the norm and not the outlier.

I've never, ever, ever understood what that DB was thinking there.

That’s just good technique.  Prohibitive Heisman trophy favorite that has 40 pounds on you coming toward you with a head of steam? Try to tackle high and make sure you are stiff legged and on your heels.

I would have gone for an ankle tackle, but it really is a hopeless scenario he found himself in there.

Tyler Texas is really that bad?

One time my buddy described his brother in laws redneck family by saying, "They're from Tyler." That was it, "They're from Tyler" was the only description needed.

I've advocated for a long time that everything East of Bastrop should be given over to Louisiana.

All due respect, but go fuck yourself and focus on your Louisiana gutter trash before the word Texas drops out of your mouth.

My Republican congressional representative held two town halls yesterday.  No fear of being shot either because he’s not a raving lunatic, unlike Louie Gohmert.

Fuck off Hugo.  Your "recent news" is something that you pulled from a wikipedia article, which cites a piece from Feb 2017. Which also happens to be a few months before a LA rep was shot at a public event by a raving lunatic. You are trolling this site with shit you drudged up after spending your Wednesday night studying wikipedia articles about congressional representatives from Texas. Get help man.

Are you Louie Gohmert’s kid or something?

Defending Louie Gohmert seems like a strange hill to die on.

Lulz. Criticism of you is not defense/support of that douche from Tyler. Troll on troll

Definitely works in both directions.  For example, the GOP has no interest in putting a good candidate up against Sheila Lee Jackson as well.  They gerrymander it so that a minority area votes in a nutcase, which allows the GOP to limit their losses and produce great sound bites for fundraising.

The real question when it comes to Sheila and Gohmert is why their own party doesn't try to offset the problem by putting up a good alternative in the primary.  Eliminate the sound bites and fundraising for the other side.  Or is there some unspoken rule about allowing a few screwups as long as both sides agree to limit them.

The GOP did not gerrymander SJL's district.  That district was drawn by Dems back in the early 70s to take a seat from the GOP.  SJL, Craig Washington, Mickey Leland, Barbara Jordan......notice a pattern there?

Splitting hairs.  Not changing her district since the 90s is the same as gerrymandering it.   the Texas GOP has no choice but to allow some Dem representatives from Houston.  Even the best gerrymanderer couldn't build a map in Houston that is 100% GOP and can withstand a court challenge.  So the GOP is happy to allow SJL  to be a rep.  And the opposite occurs elsewhere.

What point are you trying to make?
