Bingo. Funk produced some of the best music ever. Some of the disco hits listed in this thread were actually funk.

Yeah, when I think of disco, I think of 16th note high hats and a kick and snare doing nothing but hitting the quarter notes.  By the time that rhythm came to dominate the music, it got kind of boring to me.  But there was a period in the transition where you can hear the disco emerging, but there is still a lot of funk in the rhythm section.

Love this group.  That dorky old white guy on keyboards?  He also wrote Off the Wall, Rock with You, Thriller, Stomp, Give Me the Night, Yah Mo B There and Sweet Freedom, among others...

Me and my junior high friends used to stand up in the front of the living room with Boogie Night playing on the turntable,  lip syncing and performing synchronized dance moves. I’m cringing now as I write this, but back then, good times.

My best friend and I did the same thing.  He had an older sister that played keyboards in a band, and they would practice at his house, so there was a drum kit set up as well.  We would "play" along to stuff like Magic by Pilot, The Boys are Back in Town, etc..  Pretty dorky now, but a lot of fun then.

“Disco music makes it possible to have disco entertainment centers. Disco entertainment centers make it possible for mellow, laid-back, boring kinds of people to meet each other and reproduce.”  -  Frank Zappa, 1978

Tough to call this disco. But it’s disco inspired and closer to disco than some of what else has been posted:

Most people I read music opinions from put Disco music on a continuum from present day EDM stretching back to house and techno and earlier pop disco, but also including 4/4 bass drum dance tracks from all eras including some uncommon ones or artists you wouldn't immediately think of as dance jam type artists.

Great thread and definitely some "not disco" stuff on here but still great songs.  I will echo the "Birdland" Jazz not being Disco at all and if you want the better version go to youtube and listen to Weather Report do the original with Jaco on bass.   Also, a cool fact about Jive Talkin' by the Bee Gees was that opening riff is actually the sound/rhythm of a car when you drive over the bridge from Miami to Miami Beach and the tires go over the gaps in the cement.  Barry Gibb heard that groove while driving and replicated it.   I will now add a few disco songs with great opening hooks that I am surprised were missed.

Just to add a couple more great hooks/intros from the disco era starting with a great one from a porn star.

Macho Man has the more disco sounding intro but this is more iconic.

I had to add my favorite Donna Summer song even though the intro is slow and the real "disco" starts in the middle of the song.

Czech dropping knowledge on my ass.  Had no idea that Temperton was in Heatwave.  Just knew him as a prolific writer of hits for others.
