Good ol' Hank Scorpion came through for him!

It's Scorpio. But don't call him that, call him Hank.

This scene is funny because when they wrote it the Broncos had been a .500 team for several years - but the season when this aired Denver went 13-3 and then won b2b SBs the next two seasons. So Homer would have made out quite nicely.

So, People of Walmart now = Broncos fans?

The People of Walmart are professional Denver sports teams in general.  See below:

  • Colorado Avalanche (NHL): Owned by Ann Walton Kroenke
  • Denver Broncos (NFL): Owned by Rob Walton
  • Colorado Mammoth (NLL): Owned by Stan Kroenke
  • Denver Nuggets (NBA): Owned by Ann Walton Kroenke
  • Colorado Rapids (MLS): Owned by Stan Kroenke

Too lazy to find the article, but apparently in 1998 John Elway had $21MM in deferred salary coming to him and Bowlen offered him 10% of the team instead and he turned it down. He also offered another 10% for $15MM cash, and he turned that down. That share would have netted him more than $900MM….

Here is an excerpt from Rovell’s story: “In September 1998, then Broncos owner Pat Bowlen offered Elway, who had just led the Broncos to their first Super Bowl title, a 10 percent piece of the team for the money that they had owed him ($21 million). Bowlen sweetened the deal by offering another 10 percent of the team for $15 million. ... “At the $4.5 billion valuation, John Elway’s 20 percent stake that he could have gotten for $36 million would have been worth $900 million today, a 1,330 percent return, factoring for inflation. He also gave up the rights of first refusal to buy the rest of the team.”

I lived in Denver for a bit and Elway always was in a cash crunch it seemed…divorce, restaurant, car dealers…

Elway’s dad was the head coach at San Jose State when he was the #1 recruit in the country, and clearly he was going to a higher-profile school than SJSU. His dad had a quote in SI something like “You know, I give up. I gave this kid money, bought him a car, and slept with his mother and he STILL isn’t going to sign with us”….
