Tim Duncan had a 6 game WCF where he went 28/17/6/4 stocks on 57 FG%

some time not too long after kobe's death i went and started that thread about the top 10 players ever, and not only was i caught up in the moment, but i must have been smoking crack, because not only did i insert kobe into my top 10 for the first time ever, i dropped larry bird (the fuck?!) and TD down in my rankings. someone in that thread mentioned TD's playoff performances, and when i went back and looked at them i was blown away. i quickly got my shit together and re submitted a much more proper top 10. that dude is an absolute playoff killer. top 10 player ever for sure.

I'm biased as fuck but I have him over Bird and behind Magic.

I think he was just as good as Bird and simply did it longer. I also have Duncan closer to Magic than I have Bird to Duncan.

Go check out his 2013 season where he made first team all-NBA at 36 years old.

Posting this because it just came up in my feed.  Here's one of my favorite highlights with old man Timmah.  I remember watching this game in real time and couldn't get over how Tim just totally busted Demarcus mind.  Just blew it up.  Mind you, this is Cousins at the peak of his powers and thinking he's getting the better of Tim, as Tim just subtly and robotically pounds him down to powder.  38 years old and taking the supposed best young post player to school......  BTW, Spurs won.

Even the Kings announcers are laughing because Cousins is doing nothing but offensively fouling.

I watched every playoff series of his as a kid, and well into becoming a young man. And because of his greatness and ability to rise to the occasion, I knew immediately that guys like LaMarcus or Demar Derozan weren't nearly on his level. He would be locked in, and playing his ass off when it mattered most. If he wasn't shooting well, he'd be playing his ass off defensively..... nobody really has been able to replicate that since. Maybe Kawhi, but Kawhi had the examples all around him during that Spurs last championship season.

If he had played in a major market, the perception of Tim would be MUCH different.

It's mystifying that CHAMPIONSHIPS are somehow written off as 'Dude was just a program guy. He benefitted from Pop."

That happens on either coast and the talking heads would never shut up about Tim Duncan.

He may have been the best defensive player ever if you dig into the stats.

He was unbelievably good on the court and was basically unparalleled as a leader.

The people say that he benefited from Pop aren't lying, but the relationship was symbiotic. They both elevated each other to a whole new level and, by extension, their teams. I doubt there will be a player like Timmy ever again.

Duncan only played with Robinson for 6 years. The other “twin towers” you reference over the last 13 years of his career are players like Nesterovic, Dejuan Blair, Fabricio Oberto, and Tiago Splitter. That alone explains his greatness even more.

I always really liked Splitter next to TD. Dude was skilled but injury prone. TD/Splits/Diaw offered so much versatility.

Oh yeah, he was terrific. I meant it more in the context of Duncan never having another big man to carry the offensive load when he went to the bench. The biggest mistake the FO made during that era was not signing Luis Scola. Dude could really play.

Was that on the FO? I thought he was just asking more than the team could pay due to cap space and luxury tax and all that

You figure it out for a player like that, especially one they had stashed and waited on so long.

I really just have a top eight.

1. Kareem (if we take his high school and college careers as well. Otherwise Jordan is #1 if it is just NBA...but not by a whole lot)

2. Jordan

3. Lebron

4. Wilt

5. Magic

6. Russell

7. Bird

8. Duncan

Then there are a ton of really awesome players that are hard to sort out. But there is no doubt in my mind Duncan is either #1 or #2 of his era.

Hindsight is 20/20. We couldn't have known Scola would have been that good, and to be honest, at his position at that time I don't know if he would have been worth all that trouble.

I'm not taking peak Duncan over peak Dream.  It just ain't happening.

Duncan's teams achieved more, but I still don't believe Duncan is better as an individual on both ends of the basketball court.

queue the stats guys...

Seriously not trying to change the thread, but many of these posts sound like the never heard of Hakeem Olajuwon or saw him play.

Now back to the Timmy praise, which he rightly deserves.

There’s no right or wrong answer here. Hakeem had a peak of peaks. Duncan had one of the most singularly consistent careers in the history of professional sports. We were lucky to have both play in this state.

5 to 2.  I take Tim Duncan every single day and twice on Sunday.  I would agree that Hakeem is a top 10 player as well, but Tim Duncan had a better career.

and KG should not ever be mentioned in the same sentence.  TD was easily the best PF of all time with my # 2 being Kevin McHale who doesn't have the stats of Karl Malone but was a better player.

I’m probably the only KG homer here and I know better than to put KG in TDs realm.

TD had better teammates no doubt but his resume also speaks for itself. It actually bothers me how TD isn’t mentioned in the top 4 or 5 of all time because he doesn’t have flashy dunks or lead the league in points

I’d like to know how many days in TDs entire career he spent under .500 or how many times his spurs lost 3 games in a row. Shit like that has to be insane

First - KG is generally underrated. He just went to a monumentally shitty situation and stayed there for the first 10 seasons of his career. Mentioning KG alongside Timmy isn't a slight to Timmy at all (although that poster thinks that McHale was the 2nd greatest power forward ever). KG was arguably just as talented if not more so. I think he won less because he didn't have the support TD did and because he didn't bring the same intangibles.

Second - Duncan in '03 was just as good as Hakeem ever was. That '03 supporting cast had no fucking business winning a championship. He was just as good in '02, too. Even if you think Dream at his peak was better as an individual talent everything that TD did that doesn't show up in the box score outweighs it in my book (and it's not like he compares unfavorably there, either. He went 28/14/5/5 stocks for a 31.8 PER in the '02 playoffs over 9 games). Again - I'm obviously biased - but I don't think there's much of an argument. What is the argument, anyway? Hakeem had flashier moves? He had better steals numbers? Hakeem was a bit more efficient as a scorer but Duncan crashed the glass and dished it to a higher degree. Also - scoring efficiency was somewhat significantly higher in the mid 90s compared to the early/mid 2000s.

I mean - part of my reason for posting this is to highlight that despite his rep or accepted archetype as a player TD put up some insane stat lines in his heyday.

Hakeem is one of many amazing players who have claims to be top 10 of all time. I get it.

I just disagree. Duncan was better. That's nothing against Hakeem, I thought he was awesome.

Duncan was better neither offensively nor defensively than Hakeem.  He was a better defensive rebounder than Dream.

The posts that act as if Duncan was definitively better than Olajuwon are blinded by black and silver shades.

His team results were better, and that begs the question- would the Rockets have been better with Tim Duncan?  Would the Spurs have been better with Dream?

Individually, Olajuwon was better.

no.  I laid off the thread.  the continual ignoring of the comparison with Hakeem is bullshit and deliberately lazy.  Tried to tap the brakes politely, and people doubled down.

Back it up chief. You're just vomiting on the thread.

I did back it up.  You choked on your vomit.

Don't get me wrong, they are both alltime greats.  This thread ignores the fact that Timmy wasn't better individually than Hakeem Olajuwon. Nobody outside Bexar County takes Player A over Player B in those comparisons.

Did you see that post where I provided things like direct comparisons and era adjustments and attempted a holistic evaluation outside of stats? What exactly are you refuting here? All you've done is say Hakeem was better and then copy paste a bunch of irrelevant bullshit. You're slorching a grade A slorch job at this point. Just piling diarrhea on top of wet garbage.

Look up just about any of your favorite NBA pundit's all time top 10.  Duncan is in every single one of them.  Some of them have Hakeem on them, but he is always behind Tim.

Peak Dream got to feast on a pre-peak, Kobe-less Shaq that took advantage of a Bulls team having an unusual season. His greatest accomplishment that year was the team besting a prime David Robinson, a serviceable Sean Elliott, and a middling supporting cast consisting of Vinny Del Negro and Avery Johnson. There's no denying that Hakeem was absolutely the best player in every series he'd won that year.

Still I don't see that as more impressive than Duncan's run in 03 against an absolute gauntlet of talent in the western conference in all three rounds including prime Amare Stoudemire with Stephon Marbury and Shawn Marion, prime Shaq/Kobe coached by Phil Jackson and supporting cast featuring Robert Fucking Horry, and prime Steve Nash playing alongside prime Michael Finley and a young Dirk Nowitzki, a squad that had just spoiled the chances of the snakebit but dynasty-caliber Sacramento Kings in a year that Shaq/Kobe/Horry no longer would have been standing in their way to reaching their first NBA Finals.
