Heat 2

Yup, there is going to be a sequel

But, surprise ....

Spoiler

This February, Mann turned 79 and ushered in an improbably busy year. In April, his “Tokyo Vice” pilot made its debut, setting the show’s fleet feel and stark tone. Not long afterward, it was announced that the financing had materialized for “Ferrari.” And next month, in a particularly unexpected curveball, Mann will release his first-ever sequel, in the form of his first-ever novel, “Heat 2.”

Heat 2 audiobook is excellent. This is going to be a great movie if Michael Mann stays attached. Please, please, recast Pacino, Kilmer and De Niro. No de-aging bullshit. Just cast good actors that resemble the originals.

I watched the original last night. So good. Even the Pacino screaming works.

De Niro, my Gawd, had some bangers in the 90s.

Goodfellas (1990)

Cape Fear (1991)

A Bronx Tale (1993)

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)

Casino (1995)

Heat (1995)

Sleepers (1996)

Cop Land (1997)

Jackie Brown (1997)

Ronin (1998)

Oddly enough I just (re)watched Heat on hulu.  I could have sworn I saw it around original release but couldn't remember a damn thing about it.  Turns out I probably never saw it in the first place, because seeing it "again" didn't refresh any recollections.

Anyway, it was a decent flick, didn't seem in any way ground breaking to me.  Just some good actors doing good, maybe not great, work.

One thing that stood out was how slim De NIro was.  That guy is a bit of a chameleon.  He's never not De Niro, but has a different look every time.

Kilmer would be a hard sell since he can’t speak.

Heat is an all timer.

yes please on a sequel with new actors.  So much could be done around those characters that would be vastly entertaining.

I'm not sure I really dig Michael Mann, maybe that's it.  I never watched Miami Vice at all, it seemed cheesy.

Not sure if Miami Vice counts as a guilty pleasure, but I love the show.  The first season or two are fairly gritty for network 80s tv.  It definitely got goofy though, but I still love it.  Hell, I really liked the movie.  But I am a Michael Mann fan.  Collateral was great and Cruise usually annoys me.  Heat is a classic.

The other thing, I guess, is that I apparently did not see it around original release, or it's possible that I was rather mindlessly drunk.

WIthout that context and with a lot of "gritty crime dramas" over the last 30 years, it doesn't seem as classic.

I liked Miami Vice the film. Farrell makes it work. Even the regarded mojitos in Havana scene.

Collateral also awesome. LA movies based at night are Mann’s specialty.

Crime Story kind of reminds me of the original Untouchables. Chicago Outfit guys are inhuman super villains.

There was definitely some sadistic guys associated with the Outfit, but Mann goes full Batman Forever Two-Face with his mobsters. It doesn’t work for me, but I’m sure it was entertaining as hell in the 80s when there were like 12 channels.

Same here (re: watching it on Hulu). It's great. Al Pacino's screaming cadence is fucking weird and frankly as I get older, I'm turned off more and more by violence. But great movie with a compelling story. De Niro really is great in this sort of role. I think Casino is my second or third favorite movie.

How can you accurately state something isn't ground breaking when you are watching it for the first time 28 years later? You have likely watched a lot that has been inspired or borrowed from Heat since then and not even known it.

Finished the book last week. It took about 100 pages for me to get into it, but overall would recommend.

Anyway, this probably more fitting for this forum:

I think if it surmises Chris' time in Paraguay... it could work as a 2 to 2.5 hour movie. Good to hear that they're not casting the geriatric originals.

Butler as Chris. Driver as Neil is OK for me. de Armas as Charlene works too. Good GD luck casting another Vincent Hanna.

Spoiler

I'd keep the Chicago, Mexico, LA scenes in the movie, but condense/eliminate Paraguay stuff. I mean it's sideline material. I'm not even sure if book character Ana even needs to be it. Chris making moves with Nate and Kelso works just as well. I doubt an American audience will give a shit about Taiwanese organized crime in Paraguy and Singapore.

Charlene isn't in the book much. Not the meatiest role for Ms. de Armas. Happy to have her in the cast regardless.

Well, there is that whole use of the term "seem."  That's kind of a qualifier sometimes.

have you seen the insider?  i cannot recommend this film enough.

the one with russell crow playing the guy against big tobacco?  I always meant to see it.  it came out when I was too young to care about that kind of storyline.

Finally finished this on my flight. It was really well done. I think my only issue would be just how connected everything was towards the end but the tension was really well done. I'd love to see the Chicago and Mexico parts on film. Both would be pretty damn epic. I feel like this would do better as a limited series versus just one movie. HBO could do a pretty decent job with it and they have a history with Mann.

Not sure on casting because I don't know how you replace Pacino as later Vincent. You could get Wes Studi and Mykelti Williamson to reprise their roles since both are younger than Pacino. Not sure who you would get to replace Val Kilmer.  I think the Paraguay part would be cool in a series but I agree that it would be a bit of a slog for a film. I bet they move that storyline to him being smuggled into Mexico and somehow blend that into the earlier Elena storyline and him returning to help out Gabriella. Wardell needs to be someone who is very imposing. Like a thicker version of Waingro. Jason Clarke could be a decent option. As far as actors, Michael Mann loves getting actors he's worked with before so I guess comb through some of those movies and series he's done in the past 10 years. Ansel Elgort and Rachel Keller from Tokyo Vice will definitely be in it.
