I’m not saying Merrill and wolf won’t eventually be beaten out, but let’s wait a week maybe?   Or do we just go off of high school film?

We shouldn’t use high school film. Just our eyes and our brain.

Bobby Burton on today’s practice

  Reveal hidden contents

The QB battle is the big one of fall camp.

In watching workouts this afternoon, I’m of the opinion that Steve Sarkisian has an interesting choice ahead of him.

Hudson Card clearly has crisper footwork. He’s faster and quicker in his movements to get to throwing position. It may be only a slight difference between the two QBs, but there’s a definite difference in favor of Card on nearly every set.

At the same time, Quinn Ewers often has better ball placement underneath, intermediate and deep. He also varies speeds of the ball much better. He can zip it and he can put air underneath it, both with above average accuracy.

**

I watched the QBs, WRs and OLs primarily so that’s what I’ll talk about the most.

Who has the best hands on the team?

Troy Omeire. He catches the ball effortlessly.

His route running remains a work in progress given his previous injuries. But he is significantly further along than Jaden Alexis, who also suffered a knee injury, in that regard.

**

Agiye Hall dropped multiple passes and did not run crisp routes. Perhaps it was just an off day for the Bama transfer or just an early season adjustment, but I can’t imagine he will grade out well in coach’s tape.
**

I was not expecting Malik Agbo to look as good as he did. He has lost some weight and is already adding definition. He’s also deceptively quick for such a big guy.

In all, the freshman OLs are as advertised.

Kelvin Banks, Cameron Williams and Agbo are the team’s three biggest OLs and all of them are keepers IMO. Cole Hutson and Campbell are a tad smaller but perhaps quicker. Neto Umeozulu seems to be struggling with conditioning somewhat.

**

I liked what I saw from Jordan Whittington, Xavier Worthy and Isaiah Neyor.

Worthy just moves differently than everyone else. Neyor is a great deep threat. Whittington had a one-handed grab up the seam from Ewers. It was perhaps the prettiest pass play I saw.

**

The first team OL did not look particularly imposing. Perhaps that’s no surprise. Physically, the third team OL looked better.

Of course, looks aren’t what counts. But the physical discrepancy there is significant.

**

Put this in the bucket of good news.

Savion Red and Brenen Thompson both have natural hands.

Red could very well be the starting punt returner. He didn’t juggle or misjudge any punts, and I saw him grab five.

Thompson could be an absolute killer on option routes out of the slot to the outside. He snatches the ball easily and gets upfield.

**

I feel like Texas probably has two future NFL QBs on the roster. But they are also the two youngest in Ewers and Maalik Murphy.

Murphy is very talented and routinely has good ball placement but his footwork can be sporadic. He is a very strong developmental prospect IMO.

In case yall were wondering if Burton got any ass in college...he didn't

“Even though I don’t see any practices, workouts, film sessions or anything related to stuff off the field, I know that (insert name here) needs to be starting! I can’t believe these coaches who just went 5-7 and are trying to put food on the table and not get fired are just putting guys above (insert name here) on the depth chart just because they feel like it!”

is my favorite fall camp tradition

Collins …. Recall the under armor or all american game or some such coming out of high school.  He was repeatedly punk’d by some tackle headed to tosu.   I remember thinking ‘this kid is a five star?’ He was pushed to the ground over and over - don’t remember him winning a single snap.   It’s put up or get in the mfer for Collins this fall.

Get in the muthafucka right now... Of course, that will be enough to get him to play elsewhere...

Cool. So every single other walk of life we don’t do this kind of nonsense but football is so unique and different to every other culture that it is the only way we can possibly do it, as it came down on high from a glorified PE teacher 90 years ago so it must be holy writ.

Not true.

New employee stepping up a level doesn't usually get the hot projects and opportunities... Even when highly recruited.

How about you and I wager if Merrill von Ogden stays ahead of Banks and Campbell by the end of fall camp. Name any amount you want.

Y'all, we have fifteen 4-star DBs on our roster. If we can't make a solid secondary out of that, I don't know what to say. FWIW, I think we will.

Yep. This is why UT trying to get a portal Safety back in the Winter/Spring never made sense to me. There was already going be an abundance of DBs, who were all 4-star recruits, to throw at the position this Fall Camp.

Does this mean God is getting some of his carries?

Bobby can be a huge part of why Texas finally makes it back to winning AND also say some goofy shit. They can both be true. It’s akin to you being a part of the NIL first being setup at Texas which will be important for Steve Sarkisian to win then coming on here and shitting all over him constantly, one is great and the other one is just goofy as fuck. Lighten up Francis.

10k followers isn't one of the biggest followings on the team. It's slightly above average.

...sort of all 3 of those QBs have the same grade but are ranked this way. as far as i know, no one at ESPN has gone into how they differentiated between the 3 guys.

Where do we think Card ends up next year? Georgia was trying to flip him late if I remember and Tim Beck is at NC State right now. UCLA if Chip survives also feels like a good system fit.

it is way too early to have any input on that now. who knows, maybe he finishes his mccombs degree and decides to go grad transfer elsewhere for a graduate degree?

I can't wait for this season. If Ewers (or Card I guess) can take care of the ball and make plays, we should be fine. There is A LOT of damn talent out there, just gotta make it work. I'll be very surprised if we don't win more than 8 games. (Think I have said this the past 10 years at this time of the year).
