Four-star EDGE Derion Gullette commits to Texas

By  HUDSON STANDISH      12 minutes ago

The Texas Longhorns added a major piece to the class today in Teague (TX) High Top247 2023 linebacker/edge rusher Derion Gullette. Gullette chose the Longhorns over Texas A&M, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Alabama and represents one of the Horns biggest wins on the recruiting trail to date.

As a junior, Gullette racked up 125 tackles, two interceptions, three sacks and three forced fumbles while turning 62 receptions into 1,430 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Marlin Bulldogs in Texas' 2A classification.

In addition to his football accolades, Gullette is a three-sport athlete that lived above the rim as a basketball player and led his squad to a second-place finish in the 4X100 and third in the 4X200 at the 2A UIL state championships.

247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Gabe Brooks said this about the four-star athlete earlier this year.

“A dominant small-school football player who also shows above-the-rim bounce on the hardwood. Marlin's Derion Gullette further enhanced his athletic profile with a layered track and field performance at the Class 2A state meet. Gullette qualified in the shot put, finishing ninth with a 46-foot, 7-inch throw, and also ran anchor on two medaling relay teams: Marlin's 4x100 (silver) and its 4x200 (bronze). A 2023 Top247 four-star edge prospect, Gullette possesses a unique and varied athletic profile that suggests immense potential.”

With Gullette's verbal pledge, this marks the second year in a row that Texas landed a prospect originally from the 2A town of Marlin, Texas after grabbing defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe in the 2022 cycle.

The four-star defender will more than likely miss his senior year of high school football with a knee injury and plans to enroll at Teague High School where his father Lawrence just took the girl’s basketball head coach role.

Gullette is the 21st member of the 2023 Texas recruiting class joining the nation's No. 1 player Arch Manning. Gullette is the 13th four-star to join the 2023 Texas class.

At 6-foot-2, 220 pounds Gullete is ranked as the No. 149 player in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite, an industry-generated rating using all four major recruiting companies. Gullette is also listed as the No. 18 EDGE in the country and the No. 27 player from the state of Texas.
