We have drafted the Tuesday after Labor Day for many years.  Then last year CBSSports crashed during the draft.  Everyone was pissed and it ruined what should be a blast.

We probably are moving it up a little.  Not going on that Tuesday again.

I've had some vacation lately and during my commutes I like listening to podcasts. I dialed up the FF stuff and now I'm entrenched. Dorking out way too much but fwiw. Here are some guys I like well above their current ADPs (PPR): Trey Lance, Russ, Jalen Hurts, Saquon, Javonte, Etienne, Chase Edmonds, Rhamondrae Stevenson, Dameon Pierce, Michael Pittman Jr, Courtland Sutton, Michael Thomas, Mike Williams, Kadarius Toney, Jalin Tolbert

Picking 11th in my first draft, that’s no bueno.

I got first last year for the first time in 20+ years.  I hope it takes that long before it happens again.

I like 10-11-12 for getting 2 studs with that 2nd round follow..  Of course nothing is guaranteed...

Draft in a week and I have a dilemma. It is a one player optional keeper league, salary cap/auction style draft. Depending on how long you have kept a player the cost to keep varies. The only player on my roster even worth considering keeping is Kamara. I like other players better than Kamara but I can lock him in for 20% of my budget. I think he would go for about 25% of my budget on the open market. But the issue is availability of other top options at RB is going to be scarce.

JT will be kept

CMC and Ekeler might not be kept but will go for prices that I am not willing to pay, well above Kamara

Najee, D Henry, Mixon, Kupp, Chase, Cook will all be kept

Javonte and Saquon might be kept but I like both of those guys. I am guessing they will each go for more than I can keep Kamara for.

The biggest question is the pending 4-6 game suspension but Schefter and everyone is saying the case likely won't be decided until after the season so the suspension would be next year. Still no sure thing.

Lock in Kamara as one of my top 2 RBs at 20% and then go balls out for a guy I really want for my other RB?

That’s tough. I probably wouldn’t keep him, but I’m in one auction league too, & those goddamn RB prices will make your head spin.

Also, is it bad I want to draft Amon-Ra St. Brown because of Hard Knocks?

I said the same thing. And I would move Swift down.

Appreciate the vote of confidence. Can I trouble you for your logic?

I don't want him. I want Javonte and Saquon and/or Etienne with a possible side of Chase Edmonds. I'm worried I'm gonna get stuck with a bill for Javonte and Saquon that is 3x what I could have had AK for.

There is going to be more $$$ chasing less resources (rb price inflation).

You have a below market value option at a position of scarcity. This makes him doubly valuable, even if you like other running backs more. Worst case scenario, Kamara’s market cap will make him a trade asset for you after the draft.

The best draft’s and league winning rosters aren’t filled with “guys that I wanted”, they are filled with getting excess value out of each pick. Getting Kamara for 20% instead of 25% is creating excess value for your roster. Reallocate the extra 5% on a splurge player, or bid a couple bucks on 2-3 sleeper running backs when everyone else is out of money.

I'm thinking 7 is the sweet spot for drafting this year. Gives just enough room for someone to take someone far too early in the 1st and still get one of the top targets. Also like the groups that should be available at 18 and 31 in the 12 teamer.

Also, just finished a draft yesterday in a 9 teamer. I'm either finishing well ahead in 1st or dead fucking last. Boom or BUST players include the following:

Trey Lance

CMC

Michael Thomas

JuJu

Jeudy

Etienne

LOVE Etienne. I watched the Jags this weekend. He is explosive AF and also has great vision, broke more tackles than I expected, as well. I think Jax will be much much better on offense. I think there is a fantasy relevant role for both TEJ and Robinson. I also think Christian Kirk and Trevor Lawrence are going to be relevant.

I have now compiled 10 years of historical auction data for my league. I have compared average positional draft value of 10 year historical and 5 year historical with recommended max bids on Fantasy Pros. I think I'm more prepared for this draft than I ever have been in the past, and I get the sense I'm going to be able to get good positional value on a lot of the guys I like that I mentioned upthread. Of course, these things get wild and while I plan to hunt value I can't be a shrinking violet, either. In our league no one backs down. If you back down you find yourself with $160 left and the best players left on the board are Cordarelle Patterson and Marlon Mack. Legend has it that a few years before I joined (and I've been in it for 18 years) Jason Hanson once went for $31. The biggest questions now are who is going to get kept. What would you do?

Starting pool of $200. PPR + 10 pt TD.

Team 1: Javonte (35), Chubb (40), AJ Brown (35) or no one

Team 2: Saquon (40) or Kelce (35) or no one Edit to add - Owner has bad history with Saquon

Team 3: Ekeler (45) or Jefferson (35) or Chase (35) or no one (and no they didn't win the league least year!)

Team 4: Jones (35) or Cook (40) or no one

Team 5: CMC (45) or DaVante Adams (35) or no one Edit to add - Owner has bad 2 year history with CMC

what does the historical data look like for your league as far as top tier and next tier guys?

In my auction league, the top RBs press 70, with usualy 3-4 more in the 60s and 4-5 more in the 50s. So obv in that environment, there are some solid values on the board. If your league is a bit flatter, maybe not.

Depends on the year and the player. With our keeper rule, it's rare for the top tier RBs to be on the market but yeah they will press 70 sometimes. Davante Adams went for 70 last year. Hell one year I drafted Priest Holmes at I believe 92. Obv the year he got hurt and b/c of the draft capital I couldn't afford to draft LJ. This is what the data looks like. Past 5 numbers are skewed for Top 10 RBs and Top 3ish WRs b/c I didn't pull out the keeper data.

It's a one player keeper league. Your first year keeping a player costs you 35/200 and every additional year the player is kept that increases by $5. So for example the team that had Ekeler, Chase and Jefferson last year kept Ekeler last year for a second time at a cost of $40. This year he would cost $45 to keep. Yet they drafted Chase and Jefferson last year so instead of keeping AE they likely will save the $10 and opt to keep Jefferson or Chase for $35. At least I would.

ahhhhhh, that's a very unusual setup. my keeper league you add $5 or 10% to the previous year's value, whichever is higher. Given that setup, and your values posted, I'd go:

Team 1: None

Team 2: None

Team 3: Jefferson

Team 4: Cook

Team 5: close, prob slight lean Davante, esp given if the same guy gets CMC-fucked 3 years in a row, his brain may explode

Mostly on board with you. Guy with Saquon and Kelce has already told us he's keeping one of them just not sure who. I can guarandamntee that Saquon, Kamara and Javonte Williams will go on the market for more than they could be kept for but that doesn't mean that there's value there.

ehhhhhh.  Your data says $40 means need to be a top 11 RB.  Saquon ranked RB20 right now on FantasyPros, RB 20 minus keepers is $26 on your chart. For Javonte, $35 requires a top 16 RB, and Javonte is RB 21 on FP.  You didn't list Kamara in your OP so I dunno about that one.

Appreciate the back and forth, sincerely. You are helping me think through everything, even though I'm sure it's not much fun for everyone else! With our league's scoring plugged in and all keepers ranked, FPros has Kamara as RB10, SB as RB11 and Javonte as RB13. With keepers factored in and salary cap values assigned by FPros they have them as Available RB3 for Kamara ($45), RB5 for SB ($43) and RB7 for Javonte ($34).

I have Kamara's value pegged at right around 39 or 40 based on where I rank him. I could have kept him for 40 but I'm electing not to even though I am guessing he will go for upper 40s. I have Barkley's value right around 45 and I might be willing to spend a bit more. Javonte is a guy that it is going to take a swing to draft in this league (and I'm starting to think most leagues). I'm certain of that. He is a player that multiple teams will be looking at to target while his overall FF value is on the upswing if you buy into the thinking that he's going to bust out this year and be a top 5 pick next year. I do, personally. I know about the timeshare, I had Gordon last year. I think it's going to be more like a 60/40 or even 65/35 split this year and I think he's good enough with that offense to put up a monster year. He catches passes, too. Just how big of a swing though? I haven't decided. In the past if I had decided he was my guy I'd ride or die, 60, 65 whatever it takes. I've shifted my philosophy but will still go above market on a few players that I think will out perform projections.

I like your team. I think Cook has the potential to be RB1 this year if healthy. 15 goal line carries last year for Dalvin and only 3 Rushing TDs on them. That should flip.

It went off today. Didn't go how I planned really but I got good value in most spots and I took my swings on Pittman and Javonte and Chase Edmonds and won them for a bit over market value. I took a swing on Herbert unexpectedly because he was under valued at his current cost and won him so I had to abandon my Hurts/Lance plans. I know they're not highly sought after this year but my favorite is the team that spent $6 total on QBs and landed Rodgers and Dak. It's really kind of impossible to plan for this kind of draft. Keepers were JT (40/200), Ekeler (45), CMC (45), Dalvin (40), CeeDee (35), Kupp (35), Saquon (40), Mixon (40), Mahomes (45 LOL), Najee (35). Looks like the guys in the rectangle are mine.

Super Flex throws my shit off entirely, because it's almost a whole new game, but I really like your team.

Drafted this afternoon and stand by my 7th pick draft spot love; got JJ at 7 which seems almost silly, but Chase and Mahomes went ahead of him. Not necessarily loving what I have in the RB spot, but pretty happy overall.

  • Hurts
  • Fournette
  • Etienne
  • JJ
  • Pittman
  • JuJu
  • Michael Thomas
  • AJ Dillon
  • Kadarius Toney
  • James Cook

I like Etienne a lot. Read they are going to use him as a RB/WR combo.

Gibson went for like $40 in our $200 auction draft this morning (think his avg. dollar amount was like $15-20).

We’re all asking the guy who took him if he has an alibi.

In our auction league the guy who got Robinson yesterday went zero RB but also got Gibson because everyone knew he was trash. $5 for Robinson and $6 for Gibson. Now without his competition Gibson is projected Top 10. Oh yeah hope he's going to be ok.

One thing I can't recommend enough for a snake drafter is go use the Fantasy Pros draft toolkit. I'm not sure what's paid and what's not at this point because they give you a free membership if you deposit $10 in one of their partner sportsbooks. They have a connector that will hook into your draft on ESPN or CBS or Yahoo or wherever. It can not only analyze historical results and tendencies of others in your league, but it literally will overlay your draft and you can use the FPros interface to not only tell you who to draft next when you're up, who should be top at each position, top ECRs at current draft position, but you can do it without leaving the FPros interface. With a bit of practice and following general direction of their wizard, it's pretty easy to consistently come up with an A-/A/A+ type of draft, regardless of draft position.

I know imgur doesn't play well here but here's my last one. This is just stupid secondary league I'm helping a friend with. Wish it was this easy to ace my auction league draft.
