Isn't this program he's objecting to a fellowship program.  That does not pay more than a tenure-track faculty position.

This thread is my daily reminder never to put anything in email. I am legitimately curious about the emails our buddy Johnny has. I have zero doubt some of them are damning based on what I’ve heard at the table of both industries over the years.

I’m sure he’s pretty good about keeping his worst thoughts out of emails. At least he is before Thursday happy hour.
