China announced that it will hold military exercises that include live-fire drills in six zones surrounding Taiwan following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's arrival in Taiwan.

Nancy should get in full view of them and give her famous clap.  Those pussies aren't doing a damn thing.  Seriously, that's the only proper response.  Fucking clowns.

Your former Republican is showing.

True enough, but I have never much cared for her on non-ideological grounds.  She's performative, before the GOP took over that nonsense and perfected it.

And, this is an example of it.

And now I wish she'd retire so the Democratic Party can move on.

My comment wasn’t about her or your politics.

It was about the misogyny.

Guilty as charged. I can be a ditch pig at times, especially when going for lulz.

But I really harbor no fundamental disrespect for women. But I should be better.

We're going to walk away from them?

The People’s Liberation Army in China fired 11 Dongfeng ballistic missiles into waters north, east and south of Taiwan between 1:56 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time Thursday, the island’s Defense Ministry said in a statement. Sun Li-fang, a ministry spokesman, earlier said missiles had been fired from land, without providing more details.

China also sent long-range rockets near the northwestern outlying islands of Matsu and Dongyin, and Wuqiu in the west, Taiwan confirmed. Its defense ministry said it had strengthened its guard around the islands, which are located closer to China’s coastline than Taiwan.

Japan’s Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi condemned Beijing for its actions, saying it marked the first time a ballistic missile belonging to the Chinese military had landed within the waters of its exclusive economic zone, according to Kyodo News.

So Nancy visits and China responds by launching 10's of millions of dollars worth of military equipment into the ocean and providing us with mountains of intelligence on their weaponry and capabilities ?   I say  Nancy buys a Taiwanese vacation home and go back monthly.

Like the NCAA punishing Alcorn State for cheating at UNC. Completely meaningless from a practical perspective. I get the sovereignty, etc., etc., but they aren't going to invade Taiwan for this, let them have their little performative tantrum, and it'll go back to the nonsense before. I still think it's utterly pathetic that our country has so much fucking wealth yet we kiss China's ass so our poors can buy cheap furniture at Walmart. You know how we can set up a system where ordinary people can afford to pay a little more for American made products (or imports from places that don't commit human rights abuses)? Let all that wealth actually trickle down to the workers instead of hoarding it at the top. The right bitches about socialism but we are so far to the other side that it's sad and pathetic. People working 40 hours a week can't afford rent or food. Fuck that, we have the wealth, it's just stuck with a few assholes.

This.  Just like with Rare Earth mining, China's advantage isn't tech or savvy or less regs or whatever, it's that they do it much much much cheaper than we can, so PE isn't going to invest in it. Why would I build a factory here when I can get it for a fraction of the price from Asia, including shipping? That mindset is what got us in this problem.

So you are saying it was the super rich who were looking to create even more wealth for themselves at the expense of other Americans?

All this time I thought it was the blacks and gays that were the problem. That’s what I’ve been told at least by Fox News.

I mean, we still have sturdy almost-free furniture that my 14-year-old ass built in 9th grade shop class.

Think about it. All those woodworking machines sitting unused in school buildings about 4 months out of the year. Oughta be a way to rent weekend access to them so Jimmy McWalmartCustomer could scavenge some planks and build a scratching stick for his true love. Maybe hire an underemployed PoliSci adjunct from the Juco to come in, lock up, and sweep up fingers.

The Reagan is traversing the Taiwan Strait next week. We have brave men and women in harm’s way. Keep them in your thoughts.

JFC dude, China is not going to attack a US carrier and start WW3 over Pelosi visiting Taiwan. We know it. Taiwan knows it. China knows it.

They've been watching the Russian fail in Ukraine, just like the rest of us. Russian equipment is being thrashed by our 1990's and early 2000's tech. Chinese equipment based on Russian designs would perform even worse against our modern stuff. China thinks long-term and will not start a war they would lose badly, especially while we are currently leading a global coalition of nearly every other military on earth worth a shit.

In the extraordinarily small chance that China is willing to go to war over Pelosi visiting Taiwan, then war with China is inevitable eventually. Better to get it out of the way now while we are still considerably stronger than them.

Tensions in the Taiwan Strait are escalating following Speaker Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last week. China’s military conducted a series of military drills over the weekend – 66 planes and 14 warships were spotted around the island on Sunday, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry.

Susan Shirk, UC San Diego Researcher Professor and 21st Century China Center Chair, described the political and social implications of Speaker Pelosi’s visit.

“It’s quite possible that Xi Jinping has taken advantage of the Pelosi visit to mobilize support for himself and to kind of create a new normal in which Chinese military planes and ships and other gray zones, even Coast Guard vessels, will be pressing Taiwan,” Shirk told Yahoo Finance Live.

Quite possible? Kind of create? Damn, those are strong words.

Uncle Joe told Nancy that it would be a disaster and shows that he was right. She let her ego drive her decision and why the Dem leadership sucks so much. Instead of focusing on results, they play dumb games and lose.

Need more Uncle Joe and less Obama and Nancy

I spoke to my parents over the weekend. Even with the Chinese shooting missiles in the seas around Taiwan and deploying more warships and airplanes, my parents didn't seem terribly concerned.

One thing my mom said though was "I wish Pelosi hadn't come. She's causing trouble."  That's just one grandma's opinion, but I'm sure it's not isolated.

Maybe the news media here is portraying a worse picture that what's actually happening, but with my folks living there, I can't help but be concerned with what's going on.
