Yeah but if that big man is out on the perimeter he isn't able to do his job as a rim protector. That's his only value. Now the paint is open for Curry, KD, et al to operate.

They will never listen. In the 90's the bigs on offense would go stand on the perimeter knowing their man had to be within 5ft of them, and then whomever had the ball could just play iso. They had to come all the way and double or it was illegal defense, making it easier to get to the rim. That's what created the triangle offense. Imagine Lebron iso'd at the 18ft mark one on one. What would he score 40? People in this era HAD to learn to shoot because they were forced to with the allowing of zone defenses. There was no room for the hackers like Oakley and Mason anymore. Hand checking and such isn't that big a deal because the offensive player can be just as physical in return. If players can come to the rim with a knee up like Malone buckets will be had.

Players from this era are absolutely more skilled and anyone saying different is an idiot. These kids are getting private lessons, in the weight room, and playing against higher levels of competition at an earlier age than ever before, and that's any sport. So as such kids are bigger, stronger, and faster than previous athletes. We were enamored with Jordan's athletic ability. Now everyone in the league can jump like he could, or even higher. It's a different day the same as it would've been if you pitted the 90's guys vs the guys from the 60's.

When all of us were kids we used to laugh at people trying to tell us the Big O was better than Jordan. Now we are the olds doing the same damned thing. We should all be ashamed of ourselves.

This is a huge point.   Especially in his first few yrs MJ looked like a fucking alien compared to most of the other players.    He was MUCH faster than most 2 guards and taller than the rest of them.   He was so quick that in his first couple yrs he got travel calls made on him cause the refs couldnt believe his first step was that fast.   The team had to submit slo-mo vids to the refs to show he was putting the ball down before he lifted his 2nd foot from a face up.   In today's game the avg 2 is about the same height and stronger than him along with being just as athletic.   MJ's physical advantage just wouldnt exist.

Agree with most of your points but everyone can jump like he can today?  LOL

I didn't google "jordan highest vertical" and I'm not saying this site is spot on - just saying there's plenty of evidence out there that maybe a handful of current players have Jordan's vertical.  Again this site is whatever the fuck but there's plenty of others showing everyone having Jordan's vertical today is laughable.

Also the everyone is just SO much more athletic is bullshit too.  Yes, they're trained younger and definitely have a million advantages but the way people talk you'd think records like the long jump would just be all millennial and younger athletes in the top 100.  I know you can say those events don't draw the same athletes they did in the past.  But if all these athletic people who don't translate to the NBA are just on their ass why not go get an easy ass World Record and the couple million bucks that go along with it?  Bottom line the very best athletes from the last couple eras aren't a couple rungs below today's best when it comes to pure athletic ability.

That's actually a pretty good deal for the Lakers.

3 rotation guys that can shoot for one rotation that cannot and 2 guys that dont play while only giving up one of their picks.   I am not AT ALL a fan of Russell but its pretty good for them

An unprotected first for a losing player like Russell seems crazy, especially since it doesn’t make them competitive in the west. Like what’s the point? But maybe they just desperately needed to rid themselves of Russ.

Edit: just saw it’s got some protections, so that helps.

He’s toxic. Of course they needed to get rid of him.

1. ditching russ is a net positive in and of itself

2. putting shooters around lebron and davis is a smart idea

3. the pick is "lightly" protected which i'm guessing means top 3 or top 5 protected which lessens the potential impact of losing the pick a bit.  we'll have to see what "lightly" means in this case though.

GOAT discussions are always annoying to me, it’s impossible to fully compare players from different generations. There are a pantheon of greats who all have valid arguments. I do think that Wilt was probably the most dominant player for his generation. They literally had to change rules and court designs to keep him from taking over every game.

This does make the Purple and Gold better. I can see them getting to the 7th or 8th seed if AD can find a way to stay upright the rest of the season. That’s asking a lot out of him, but whatever. The main thing is the Lakers did not get saddled with World B. Flat and all of the insanity that comes with that. I am fine with Russell being back instead of having traded for a team destroyer.

What dumb fuck would take Westbrook?  I mean one that’s not tanking

The talk is Clippers. He and PG are supposed to be tight from their okc days and John Wall hasn’t exactly been killing it there. Russ was actually somewhat effective as a sixth man for the Lakers this year. For the minimum, you could do worse as long as he’s willing to accept a role.

Russ on bench watching pg13.  Turns to kennard and says “you know I can do triple doubles all day”

Another trade:

The Portland Trail Blazers are trading Josh Hart to the New York Knicks, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday night.

In return, New York is sending Cam Reddish, Ryan Arcidiacono, Svi Mykhailiuk and a protected 2023 first-round pick to Portland, sources say. The lottery-protected pick turns into four future second-round picks if not conveyed this year.

I feel good about Russ’ chances of getting to number 2 all time in TOs, but I don’t know if he can get to #1.

I’m hoping he can still maintain being the worst ping range shooter in the league.  He used to be the worst defender at one point too. Don’t think he is anymore

So what's Phoneix's starting 5?  CP3 - Booker - ?? - Durant - Ayton?

Cam and Mikal would have been the 2/3 starter, but with both being sent out, are they going to put TJ Warren there? Not much depth on the team either.  They might be able to acquire something tomorrow before the deadline though.

They've got shooters on the bench. I can't think of any glaring holes other than depth behind Ayton.

It’s Phoenix. They’ll find a way to fuck this up.

This isn't some home-run type of deal like KD to the Ws was. PHO is trading away a couple of great depth pieces - CP is 48 years old and can't stay on the floor and Booker is coming off of an injury.

If their core 4 can stay healthy for a playoff run then they're the prohibitive favorites but that may be a big if.
