28-3 overall before any of the tournaments? I would take that in a heartbeat.

But I don't like the No.2 rating. Too high. Way too high for these guys right now. Not sure they're ready to be frontrunners.

I don't know about them, but I'm not ready.

But while Kenpom is important, it's not what gets the media excited. They'll be in the low teens in the coaches/media polls when the season starts.

And Beard did a great job of having last year's team improve throughout the season and playing at its best at the end of the year. Aside from that conference tournament game against TCU where he seemed to me to not care all that much about the result.

His ratings are the ones I follow the closest for sure, but any preseason ranking system is going to be silly as fuck, it's mostly just fan fodder. I rarely find myself questioning where teams end up on his chart at the end of the season though, which probably speaks volumes for how much work he puts into it.

I noticed that the broadcasts were using his metrics a lot more toward the end of the season than I remembered in years past though.

Kenpom's final top 10 from 2022, and where they were ranked preseason:

1)Gonzaga- 1 (AP 1, coaches 1)

2)Houston- 11 (AP 15, coaches 14)

3)Kansas- 3 (AP 3, coaches 3)

4)Baylor- 6 (AP 8, coaches 8)

5)Arizona- 47 (AP 29, coaches NR)

6)Kentucky- 17 (AP 10, coaches 11)

7)Texas Tech- 12 (AP 33, coaches NR)

8)Duke- 10 (AP 9, coaches 9)

9)Tennessee- 13 (AP 18, coaches 17)

10)Villanova- 9 (AP 4, coaches 4)

So they’re all a crap shoot with about a 50% hit rate?

That's pretty good, assuming there are no subjective inputs.  Arizona and maybe Kentucky are the only real outliers.
