Everyone spend 1 minute thinking about those. After you’re done, stop generalizing. Every group has something different going on, but it’s still gonna be 65/35 total

Found this from September in the Chronicle:

Now, following back-to-back years of sharp increases, the murder rate has begun to recede in Houston and the county as a whole. And each major category of violent crime — murder, rape, robbery and assault — has declined countywide through the first half of 2022 compared to the same point last year.

Also, they said that murder in the unincorporated areas was flat at 5 per 100,000.

It might not be impossible but it would be difficult for a Republican to win the mayor race in Houston.

Technically it's non-partisan but the real Dem candidate will do what they can to ensure voters know who is who.

joke from several years ago:

houston mayoral election consists of: old, white, male, trust fund architect; middle aged, white, lesbian accountant; old, african american, big law and former city attorney.

which one is the republican?

Mealer could run for Mayor with Turner term limited, but coming off a losing effort in 2022 "red year" is not going to endear her to many people.

GOD YES.  I will give her credit for knocking off Devon Anderson, but god damn, Harris County can do better.

Devon is a law school classmate.  Used to be liberal as hell.  Her mom is a perfesser of women's studies at Baylor (or something similar) and a big buddy of Ann and Cecile Richards.

Probably some political expedience running as an R, but a career spent in law enforcement probably turns many into mini-Himmlers.

I assumed it was mostly bc her husband was an R and when he did, it was easier to run as a R, especially in 2014 Harris county

What do you think and how do you explain that? As mentioned in the other thread, Abrams was a rising star just like Beto. What changed that she couldn't get the band back together of her former coalition and status quo who supported her in the past? I don't recall any self-inflicted wounds or controversy she stepped in from then and now.

There was a lot of local backlash against her stemming from her purported national ambitions. Also there were countless examples of her doing stuff that proved the narrative that Kemp raised about her on this front.

  1. About 4 days before the election she called into a local Atlanta morning radio show, got into an argument with them and then hung up.
  2. During her book tour she didn't have any appearances in Georgia.
  3. She's more of a policy wonk than a talented politician.
  4. Her campaign was accused of being too insular and not heeding local advice
  5. Plus you have the stuff like that proved successful for the republicans that did win ie Kemp deciding to distance from Trump and Abrams being tagged with being against opening up the state during covid lockdowns and also playing a role in the MLB allstar game leaving Atlanta even though she played no part.

give it two year of R’s war on abortion. They’ll want to track cycles real time, permission to leave the state, fine corporations for covering abortions, go after dfw, Austin, hou, ….

For better or for worse, that Freedom Caucus in the Texas legislature is well-funded from those West Texas billionaires, who want them to go hard on abortion, up to and including trying to criminally prosecute corporates that allow/support employees leaving Texas for abortion.

And now that the mid-terms are over, I imagine in January they will try to put something in place to prevent women from getting abortions outside of Texas, even if it's just going after employers and healthcare providers.

Saw she completed an Ironman competition in Cozumel and people still tried to talk shit to her on Twitter.
Seems like statewide they have identified her as the number 1 threat to the club and for some reason Ogg wants to help.

Any pictures of her coming out of the swimming leg?

This is the answer. We saw it with Hillary, Pelosi, AOC and the Squad, and now with Hidalgo. The GOP is not fond of women, and most especially women who call them out on their bullshit and are rewarded for it. They will sling mud for decades and eventually turn their camp into rabid anti-whoever the target woman is acolytes. Hidalgo a real but remote threat so the poo flinging machine has cranked up. It isn’t in high gear yet because we’re talking about a blue result in a blue county. But it’ll continue at a steady pace until one day she tries to run for something statewide and they’ll let it rip.
