2023 Official Astros World Champs Offseason Thread

I wasn't able to post during the game, and nsiap, but has anyone ever hit a ball up there before the Big Man did it tonight? Smoltz said he didn't know of any, and Altuve said he'd never seen it.

That bomb will be talked about for 100 years.

Thanks again for all of you who kept the faith and kept supporting the Astros even when they were down. Like we were saying after game 3, it ain't over til it's over ... and it wasn't over.

Congrats Stros. Hell of a franchise y'all got there. I hope we can make it to that level someday.

It made a bunch of people very happy at the bar that I'm at and that made me smile.

We need to keep you cocksuckers from winning more of em now.

Y'all got a great hire in Bochy at least. And Semien seems to do really well every other year so look out for him in 2023.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Yuli at 1B next year.

Wouldn't mind it, either.  But you've got to get a fallback plan, too.  I love Yuli, especially that glove, but his hitting plummeted this year and sometimes guys get old fast.

I'd feel a lot better in general if we got somebody who could backup mutilple IF spots and pinch hit.

The scary thing for the league is that 2022 was a light offense by our standard and we've got the trading chips to fix that.

Ok- now comes the part of the season that I find even more fascinating than the regular season and 162 game grind. So much of baseball is just math now that putting together a team in the off-season sort of guarantees you will get through the regular season way more often than not, and from there it’s sort of a crap shoot As to what’s going to happen in the playoffs that doesn’t develop necessarily in a normal or logical way. Can baseball surprise every day?  Yes, and that’s one of the coolest things about it.
Does baseball in the regular season matter?  Not all that much, which is also a great thing about it. It’s there with you every day. Like a friend. You know you can count on it for 6 straight months. It’s so relentless that I find myself bummed out every time the Astros have an off day bc it’s like something in my life isn’t right. Then, it comes back the next day and it’s like- cool, I can take a deep breath and life is back to normal. But the off-season, that’s what sets the entire Rube Goldberg machine up so that’s why it fascinated me so.
And this off-season there are so so so many decisions.
I’m going to break this into parts so that instead of 1 tl/dr you will get 3 or 4 TL/DR. Thanks for indulging me.  Hopefully a couple people will like this. For the rest of you please feel free to roll your eyes and scroll on through.
Thanks

Part 1- context for the game: what’s going on in baseball and why I’m so excited for these changes

part 2- pieces on the chessboard, decisions they Astros will have to make

Part 3- goodbye and good luck- thanks for the memories

Part 4- hey, let’s talk about an extension

Part 5- Are we shopping at Dior (I love you Carlos but that was douche)?  Walmart?  Somewhere in between?  FA moves and markets I’m really interested in.

going to do some research and blow some of these out. Y’all have one long winded one a day every day next week that you get to ignore.

Unpopular thought but I don’t think JV comes back. It won’t be in the poor manner that Cole left us but I think he wants top pay for 3 years with an option for a 4th.  300 victory chase. And why not, since someone will pay him. Especially the Dodgers and doesn’t he live out there?

the dominance of the bullpen and Javier make JV a bit less necessary.

hope I’m wrong. I guess it will come down to whether crane will pay. I’m guessing that all else being equal he would stay with us.

He made some great hitters look bad in the process.  Wonder if there's any chance of him moving to starter.

He came up as a starter and I love grooming young players in relief first but I think he’ll need to upgrade his change up if he wants to start.  He’s primarily fastball/slider and this is the first year since A ball that his control didn’t seem to hold him back.

I think it’s been pretty well established that Verlander is a Crane favorite and re-signing him doesn’t have the same budget limitations that might have applied to previous free agents.

Agree but there are always limits. It definitely helps us that a 8-10 yr deal isn’t on the table given JV’s age.

This is also not very sabermetric of me, but I think having a guy who’s been a historical #1 starter helps keep the whole staff organized.  Even if it’s a Dave Stewart or Jack Morris who maybe doesn’t have the numbers of the number 2 or 3 guy.  I don’t think it’s purely because of Strom that Cole had his best seasons here, I think it’s because he didn’t have to be that guy and deal with the pressure associated with it.

The Yankees messed with his whole pitching approach.  When he was throwing 98-99 at the knees for strikes, he was pretty much unhittable.  In the ALCS this year, he threw more breaking balls than fastballs.  Spider tack doesn’t explain it all because Frambler recovered.

Ha. You missed the first extend with the write up explaining Framber is arb 2 but still has 3 years of club control.
second possibility- I fucked it up.

Nah, you skipped Maton.

Sorry about my double double Abreu post.  Not sure what happened.

Every MLB front office exec this AM : We need a roster that can challenge Houston in a 7 game series. Can we hit Framber, Neris, LMJ, Abreu, Pressley, Javier, Garcia, Urquidy, Martinez, Brown ?  Can we hold down Altuve, Pena, Yordan, Bregman, Tucker, Chas ??? Who are they going sign ?? Who's their next Pena ??

I think Crane’s alleged plan to move on from Click and maybe Dusty had been put on the back burner.

Sign Judge and send him to AAA just to be like that.  Sign anyone the Dodgers come for just to be like that.

This is how I run my businesses.  I also used to own a lot of casinos in Atlantic City, a scam college and a steak-by-mail boondoggle, so I know how to do this.

Another question to be answered is backup catcher. Do we just give the job to Lee and groom to take over in 2024 or bring someone in? I haven’t been overly impressed with Lee so far.

hopefully lee is a prime trade piece

diaz will get a shot, imo

leon is a catcher too

little correa was moved to catcher, he'll be an mlb player too

keep Yuli obviously.   Keep Vasquez, Montrero, and Brantley (we'll see how he returns).

Dump Diaz, Will Smith, Castro and Mancini (sorry).

Trade Maton (to the NL bottom dweller) for a hitter.

Hensley to minors mostly.

Next year playoffs - make JV the 3rd or 4th starter.  Valdez and Javier should be 1-2.

Gallo and Yordan. They need to paint a chair orange up there for Yordan

So I guess this means we sign (trade for) Gallo. Let's just go full death star.

Yes this is a joke, but I'm not sure there's anything else left after Judge signs with the Giants that will make a certain poster's head explode more than Gallo coming to Houston, getting coached, then becoming a consistently productive hitter.

Some of you need to separate your emotions from the decision and realize you’re advocating resigning a guy who will be 39 and was worse than replacement level this year. He was a black hole on offense at a bat first position.

It’s awesome he rebounded in the postseason. Thanks for the memories and let it go.
