Defund the IRS

I remember back in the day when we were told immigrants were given free money or loans. They all get this and you mericans are screwed.
I actually used to believe this. However an easy search said free money for legal immigrants is available. $900. That is causing red blooded mericans to not get their share.
Fattie is too lazy to research this and believes Fox News with 0% research.
Go down rabbit hole and illegal immigrants usually pay 8-10% tax with 0 return.

I am far from rich and no kids and used to wonder “why do I have to pay school taxes”.

Grew up a little and realized more educated people is better for all of us. Some are too stupid to realize this.

But it is at least theoretically possible for the ignorant to work really hard and smart and achieve some upward mobility, if not "the American Dream."  But, as a practical matter, I think the ability to do that has diminished significantly in the time since between the Depression and WWII and the 80s, when "trickle down economics" and other things started biasing everything toward the capital-holding classes and against the labor classes.

I'm still fundamentally a capitalist, but part of the philosophy underlying capitalism is the "Protestant work ethic," and, setting aside "Judeo-Christian," Protestant, and other loaded terms, I think many of those philosophies carried a significant bit of altruism, both personally and in governmental policy.  And we've lost sight of that.

Or, if you want to look at it another way, the Gekko way, "greed is good."  To an extent, yes it is because it is one of our baser instincts, so it is a reliable motivator and policy basis.  History has seemed to prove that it is a more reliable motivator and policy basis than pure altruism, as those societies seem to have rapidly become corrupted to the point of failure (because the ineluctable greed and self-interest wiped out any benefit).  That utterance in Wall Street was intended by Stone to be shocking and kind of horrific, but, because 80s, it wasn't entirely viewed that way.

But, greed remains one of our baser instincts, and isn't really "good" at all.  From the perspective of most of the world's religions/moral philosophies, it's actually evil and a sin.  It must be tempered by altruism or the society based on it will become corrupted and fail, as well.

I think it's plainly obvious that the most correct answer lies somewhere in between.  A mix of the best parts of capitalism and socialism.  AKA Democratic Socialism.  But that's just scary words for far too many people.  Oh well.

I just came in this thread to see if that Meerkat dude was banned yet.  I see he is only at -92 if I’m reading that correctly.  I’m very disappointed in all of you for not doing your part to ban him so he can come back again as some other animal and smoking device.

Now pardon me while I go start a thread about defunding the fire departments around the country.  I mean if you are dumb enough to to let your house catch on fire then you deserve to lose everything, right?

They also pay gas tax, sales tax and other. While usually getting lower wages. Google worker shortage in Texas.
hope you don’t want a house built anytime soon. I laughed when I saw the worker shortage story. Cause I know lot of people that are considered working poor and will bitch about paying more for stuff but believe magats about immigrants.
https://www.dallasnews.com/news/texas/2022/09/12/texas-is-among-worst-states-in-us-for-workers-study-finds/

How many stories do you see about immigrants coming in living with family, having $20 and starting a successful business. You never see stories about them getting huge government loans and starting business. Not sure why FN hasn’t covered this issue.

Face it, you’re all for “freedom and rights” as long as you don’t have to pay more for it. You are jealous cause Fox has told you to be jealous about issues that don’t exist. It’s time you realize you have 0% empathy and you belong somewhere like Venezuela.

Loathsome and disingenuous? The same meme/premise was met with 7 pos reps and humorous applause (just 10 posts or so after the last cactusflintheas post so had he wanted to be disingenuously, as you say, offended he could have been), on the lol thread.

My only error appears to being the opposite of disingenuous, which is being serious and starting a conversation about that seriousness, in a room where a few very intolerant and ignorant people (just a few bad apples) can’t help but to pity themselves and get angry all the dang time and go on deep neg witch hunts.

What percentage of YOUR income do you pay in gas tax? Or sales tax. Or car registration.
Now, what percentage of a poor person’s income do they pay in gas tax? Or those other things?
That’s the difference. Those costs are FLAT for most everyone, but as a percentage of income, they are REGRESSIVE in effect.
Math. Do some.

If you admit to watching Fox and Hannity, in the past, we can at least assume a lot of your worldview was formed/created in that toxic universe.  If you listen to Rush over the years and absorbed his daily lies and hate as truth and guidance, you will come to the same opinions.

As a judge once told me, internal assumptions are the railroad tracks to inevitable conclusions. Conservatives’ opinions are usually formed by the “truths” they have heard for decades on what passes for conservative news.   Problem is, most of those truths are simply false.

From the Taxes thread, which fatty participated in at the time:

Quote

I didn't say poor people are excluded from property taxes. Poor people pay rent, which usually covers their landlord's property taxes. They also pay sales taxes and working poor pay payroll taxes.

But most of what I'm referring to aren't even called "taxes," because those who impose them don't want people like you to think they're taxes, but by any reasonable definition of the word "taxes," they qualify. I'm talking about traffic tickets, fines for nonpayment, court costs, etc. All of these are levied disproportionately against poor people and can make up 50% or more of a city or county's budget. Those are taxes. They are compulsory levies to fund government and are punishable by imprisonment for failure to pay. By any definition of "tax," they qualify.

But even if you want to exclude those tickets, fines, fees, and similar charges that are imposed pretty much only on poor people, well, I've got some bad news for you (well, bad news for your argument, could be great news for your bank account):

Quote

Our findings are striking. One in four low-wage workers face marginal net tax rates above 70 percent, effectively locking them into poverty. Over half face remaining lifetime marginal net tax rates above 45 percent. The richest 1 percent also face a high median lifetime marginal tax rate – roughly 50 percent. Double taxation matters.

...

Our findings are striking. First, American households typically face high marginal net taxes on working. Their median tax rate is 43.2 percent. Second, when one disaggregates by age and resource level, one sees a U-shaped pattern, albeit it minor, in median rates with the bottom and top quintiles facing higher rates of marginal net taxation than those in the middle three quintiles. Third, marginal tax rates among the poor are very highly dispersed. Fourth, one in four bottom-quintile households, regardless of age, face marginal tax rates above 65 percent. Thus, a major share of poor households are effectively locked into poverty by America’s fiscal system. Fifth, in ignoring the double taxation of earnings (because of the subsequent taxation of earnings from saving), conventionally measured marginal tax rates – current-year marginal tax rates – significantly understate the more comprehensive remaining lifetime marginal tax rate. Sixth, state-specific tax and benefit provisions produce major differences across states in marginal and average tax rates. Indeed, a typical household can raise its lifetime living standard by as much as 8.1 percent simply by moving states.

That's from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, not some hippie college study. They looked at the impact of personal income taxes, corporate income tax, FICA, sales taxes, estate and gift taxes, and Medicare Part B premiums, and the following transfer programs: EITC, CTC, social security benefits, SSI, SNAP, TANF, medicaid, medicare, ACA, Section 8 vouchers, and childcare assistance, and found that when all of these programs are taken together, they fuck the poor the hardest, the richest 1% (in terms of income, so we're not actually taking about the wealthy here) the second-most, and the middle class actually gets fucked the least. And for some reason they didn't even take into account the impact of the mortgage interest deduction, which certainly doesn't help the poor.

It would be nearly impossible for you and your party to be any more wrong about how the government operates and who it helps. It overwhelmingly helps middle class (white) Americans and bleeds the poor dry to do so, and then takes a large chunk from working professionals, self-employed, and small business owners to cover what the poor can't.

Fatty's been presented with the data that proves him wrong and has never bothered trying to dispute it. In fact, he spent the whole next page bitching about poor people being stupid for not maxing out their 401ks.  He just hates poor people.

Cool, let's go down the list.  Most all working poor have all three of those withheld from their paycheck.  There's a FICA line item on freaking McDonald's paychecks.  They also pay gas taxes.  They pay property taxes, which are pass-through in rents.   They pay to register their car.  They pay for any necessary work licenses/credentials.  They pay sales and use taxes.  You are focused solely on Federal Income Tax, as if it was the only tax out there.

It is inarguable that as a PERCENTAGE of income, the poor pay more in government taxes and fees than the middle and upper classes.  Further, the percentage who "have no skin in the game" -- that is, who pay no Federal Income Tax, is a buttload less than you think, AND.....are exactly the people we would expect not to owe taxes:

Quote

In 2007, before the economy turned down, 40 percent of households did not owe federal income tax.  This figure more closely reflects the percentage that do not owe income tax in normal economic times.

These figures cover only the federal income tax and ignore the substantial amounts of other federal taxes — especially the payroll tax — that many of these households pay.  As a result, these figures greatly overstate the share of households that do not pay federal taxes.  Tax Policy Center data show that only about 17 percent of households did not pay any federal income tax or payroll tax in 2009, despite the high unemployment and temporary tax cuts that marked that year.[5]  In 2007, a more typical year, the figure was 14 percent.  This percentage would be even lower if it reflected other federal taxes that households pay, including excise taxes on gasoline and other items.

Most of the people who pay neither federal income tax nor payroll taxes are low-income people who are elderly, unable to work due to a serious disability, or students, most of whom subsequently become taxpayers.  (In years like the last few, this group also includes a significant number of people who have been unemployed the entire year and cannot find work.)

Moreover, low-income households as a group do, in fact, pay federal taxes.  Congressional Budget Office data show that the poorest fifth of households paid an average of 4.0 percent of their incomes in federal taxes in 2007, the latest year for which these data are available — not an insignificant amount given how modest these households’ incomes are; the poorest fifth of households had average income of $18,400 in 2007.[6]   The next-to-the bottom fifth — those with incomes between $20,500 and $34,300 in 2007 — paid an average of 10.6 percent of their incomes in federal taxes.

Moreover, even these figures greatly understate low-income households’ total tax burden because these households also pay substantial state and local taxes.  Data from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy show that the poorest fifth of households paid a stunning 12.3 percent of their incomes in state and local taxes in 2011.[7]

When all federal, state, and local taxes are taken into account, the bottom fifth of households pays about 16 percent of their incomes in taxes, on average.  The second-poorest fifth pays about 21 percent.[8]

And those are just TAXES, not other government fees and levies, which are also significant as a percentage the lower your income.

Stop.  Just stop.  Your assumptions are almost entirely incorrect, and are contrary to all facts and data.

Fatty knows that the poor who don't pay any federal income tax pay no federal income tax because it's either they pay federal income tax or they can (maybe) afford food and shelter. He doesn't want poor people to be able to afford food and shelter, he wants them to die.

Cool.  So, in your mind, since the percentage of total income paid by the poor doesn't matter, let's play out a flat income tax of $15,000.

Guy who makes $100k pays $15k, has $85k left over, can pay his bills easily.

Guy who makes $35k pays $15k, has $20k leftover, can't cover his bills.

Jesus, this is fucking dumb.   How much money you have LEFT after paying the government its piece is a really, really important data point.  As someone who has paid bills when  DIDN'T have any money, vs. having money now, I can tell you the "how much money do I have left after I pay them?" question was THE most important.  Paying my $200 electric bill made me think when it meant that I had $1000 left to pay everything else.  Today?  I don't give a shit.  $200 is pocket change to me.

And regardless of what you feel, the data shows that the poor pay a much larger slice of what they have to gov't taxes and fees than most do.  They do have skin in the game.  And their skin matters to them more than it does to most.  I just paid to register my car.  Didn't even think about it.  But someone with $200 in the bank, trying to figure out how to buy groceries for the month....that decision matters.  Yet in your world, they have no skin in the game, and are on easy street.  It's truly amazing.

I wouldn't gaf half as much if their share was $10, or $50.  Now I get to hear about everyone who can't make $10 happen, and how that will decimate them.   But at least then you have some pride you've contributed like the rest.  I'd be fucking ashamed to show my face somewhere and pretend like I contributed to the financials of our society.  Thanks for all the cool shit guys!!!  It's cool, I paid sales tax on some stuff, and helped pay (way less than actually needed) to the highway fund with this gas I bought.

So, you're going to ignore the fact that 1) they DO "contribute to the financials of our society," and 2) as a percentage of their total income, do so at a higher rate than most.

Just so long as we've established that you are cherrypicking, and talking about only one of literally DOZENS of government taxes and fees that people pay, with no rational basis for that distinction, we're good.  We know that you are simply going to follow whatever path helps you rationalize that you are good, and poor people are bad.

I'm certain this was clear the entire time.  As stated, equality is great and a core staple, until it's convenient not to be.   Also as stated, no one has qualms about others (when they are unaffected) paying more, as long as it's their chosen group (corps, churches, wealthy, etc).   It's literally the same exact premise, flipped.

I mean....except for the fact that I'm among one of those "chosen groups" (I make enough to be taxed like I'm wealthy, although I sure as shit don't feel like it)....and I have no qualms about it, generally speaking.   A functioning society with functioning systems, infrastructure, courts, roads, emergency services, etc., costs money.  I reap real benefit from that, so have no problem paying for it.

And, if at the end of the day, my total percentage of income paid to run those things is, say, 20%.....and the total percentage of income of someone making $30k is also 20%....how and why should I resent that?  I ACTUALLY believe in a progressive taxation model which, yes, takes into account "what's left" after you pay your due to the government.  Thus, I would prefer that the guy making $30k pay much less in taxes and fees, because I'd rather he use his income to support himself, and maybe have a chance to work his way out of poverty, instead of getting caught in the well-known and obvious "poverty trap."  Likewise, even though I pay a lot in taxes, I have a lot "that's left" after we pay those.  So, as I've seen my tax bill go up, I'm okay with it.  Because I'm a member of a society, not just a stand-alone individual against the wilderness.

Your stated premise is that you want everyone to have "skin in the game."  The game, as you defined it, is "contributing to the financials of our society."  You have been presented rock-solid, irrefutable evidence that the poor actually and materially contribute to the financials of our society.  Yet you continue to harp on a thesis that has been completely destroyed.  You're not acquitting yourself very well here.

When I grow up, my hope is to be like you.  I mean that with only a tiny, tiny bit of sarcasm. Aside from your ledge dwelling, you seem enlightened.

No one is going to change any minds here.  And even if we did, no one posting has the power to take any action on it.  Masturbatory theoretics is all it is, every single last topic on this forum.

Can you point to when this was established?  I understand the premise.  I feel pinched compared to the rich, maybe I should get refunded in full?  Percentage between me and Bezos is pretty stark, after all.   I get how percentages work.

Okay, I just want to say no judgement.  We may have more in common than you realize.  You also have shitty takes.  Yada, yada, yada.  And Bob's your uncle.

But holy shit, "Masturbatory Theoretics."  I'm literally going to learn the clarinet and form a band with that name.  That is out-fucking-standing.  Have some rep.

You're incorrect that nobody has moral principles. You're projecting.
