2023 Poker in the Rear

Always buy in for the max amount (within reason, like I don’t always auto match the stack, depends on… stuff), top off to max buy when ya get below 2/3ish of the max buy in, and bring as many bullets as ya feel comfortable losing in a single session.

The Lodge looks to be bumpin per Poker Atlas, it’s the Brad, Andrew, Doug 1/2 meetup game. 25 1/2 tables going as of now. Was just going to the current withdrawal spot (TCH), but may have to venture north, beyond the wall tonight.

played on Sat,  bought in for $300,  got my stack up to about $550, when  I was the button on a double straddle board.   folds to me, and I decide to make a move, and make it $45 with Qh4s.  BB, stradle 1 &2 all call....  shit.

4d 6d 4x... maybe not so shit.   checks to me, I bet out $50 to make a flush draw pay.  BB calls. all else fold.

Turn is 9h.  now BB bets out $75, with another $140 behind.  I shove. she snap calls and shows 6h4h... I dont improve.  guess thats what I deserve for playing Q4....

end up going broke in a bomb pot where I had top set on 1 board,  and an open end straight draw with any 4 cards needed to hit the nut straight... lost when the front end flush hit on my set board (no pair), and totally wiffed on my wrap draw on the other.   left after -300

played yest bought in for $300 for about 2.5 hours, managed to slowly chip up without any major hands to talk about, left with $470   +170

played for 2 hours today... bought in for $300, down to $100 at one point (topped up $200).  Get AsAd UTG,  limped to target 3 guys later to act, first one didnt disapoint, he made it $20, the 2nd one called the $20, 3rd on made it $65. I  reraise to $165.   FTA shoves for a total of $185, one fold and then the 3rd guy calls.

Flop is all low clubs.   I bet my stack of $110. 3rd guy folds.    no more clubs hit, other guy says hes got AK, and folds when I show the AA.   left shortly after.   +$200

To acknowledge the… other side of poker, I’d actually been on about a $4k downswing, mostly from a crazy 5/10 home game that I was really under bankrolled for.

Anyways, point being downswings happen, keep playing yo game you’ll be on the right size of variance again!

How diligent and what do y’all use to track your shit? I’ve gotten much better tracking sessions this year, maybe because I’m not able to play as many. For tax purposes this is all sample data, of course. I use Poker Income, seems to check all the boxes I need, but maybe there is some new awesome shit out there?!?!

Both plays were fine imo. I don’t do the AA UTG limp play myself but it can be quite effective at low stakes where there are a few always-aggro players. Risk is of course that everyone else limps too and you’re pretty much just set mining with rockets at that point and stand to lose a big pot by overplaying them post flop.

Suited Q opener on button is proper in normal game with no straddle. May be edge with double straddle, though I like your sizing to cover that additional risk

totally fair... there is a reason I am playing 1/2.     I am not even remotely good enough to play anything higher... I try to stay in my lane and let the drunks pay me off when I have a big hand.

Just bustin your sack. If you play at Red Star regularly, I’m sure we’ve played together and I can prolly guess who some of the villains you’re talking about are.

I’d just seen ya mention the AA limp move a few times recently, so maybe throw in the occasional A 2-5 suited, etc or something into that limp/reraise range may be something to consider.

I also forgot to mention two slightly humorous hands that happened last night where the poker gods were both laughing at me, and protecting me at the same time.

first hand happens when I am the CO, with QQ.  a pretty tight player leads out for $15 and folds to me.   Obviously i plan to raise here. and I thought I grabbed one green and two reds to make it $35.  and I bet out the 3 chips except I managed to grab 3 reds instead,  dammit.... stupid.    everyone else except BB folds, he calls.

flop is A K 7.  BB shoves for $110, tight dude insta reshoves for more... as last to act I lol and say damn, these are no good anymore and show the ladies.

BB shows A7,  tight dude shows KK.... lol WOW, I ended up losing the absolute minimum with that hand.

Then no more than 1 orbit later, I am  MP with AsQx   I make it $10 to go.  get 4 callers, until the  BB who had basically been felted last hand- hes only got $14 in front, he shoves it out there.   Its a dead raise, so we all call the extra $4.

flop is QsJs3s.

thats pretty damn good for my hand.  I lead out for $35.... folds to the SB who shows Jx 4s  and folds, and I take back my bet, I show the hand and the BB is getting up off the table.  Turn is a J.... river is not a spade.

he fips over K4ss....   oh wow.       another hand where I could have very easily gone broke and instead lost the bare minimum... even the dealer commented that he couldnt tell if I was getting lucky or unlucky.

I would argue very lucky, both of those hands could have very easily resulted in me getting either felted or heavily gutted. In those cirucmstances, I happily lost that $29.

Was Q4o not suited, I def hate doing that to win blinds in a small stakes game where people aren’t going to fold often enough and we have literally one of the worst hands in the deck for how it flops. Agree Q4s, J9o, 86s etc obv fine.

Ah misread that as Q4 suited. Yeah Q4o is an instafold.

Let’s “make plays” in position with suited hands that allow us to semi bluff cbet when flop gives us a draw. Q4o will almost never give you anything to semi bluff with

Going to miss this one, unfortunately.  Everything I've heard in my poker room suggests its going to be as big as ever.  Amongst the tourney regs, its not even a question of if but of when and for how long they'll go each year.  Seems like the youtube vlogs have given us another mini-moneymakeer jolt

Incredible content! Great play by both and I love his 25% randomizor

I’ve recently added to my arsenal the “approval” for me to call a missed flop when I have the possibility of turning both a backdoor flush and backdoor straight draw. It’s made for some excellent hands like this

I have not played cards in years. I mostly played NL hold ‘Em and PL Omaha. I want to get back in to playing, but I have no idea where to start. Any new books, or websites, that anyone recommends reading? Also, does anyone play online? If so, what site(s) do you recommend?

On this one, it never seemed unreasonable to me. There was no hollywooding or mental paralysis here

If I had a $750k decision, I might blackout for a bit. Even so, Polk actually apologized, unnecessarily. I used to think Doug Polk was a total jackass but I’ve watched him some on The Lodge streams and he seems fun to play with.

Agree. He can absolutely be a dick, but I’ve also see him be a gracious host, respectful guest, and of course a fantastic analyst of poker hands.  I can do without the click bait and soap opera drama on his YT channel, but the poker content is top notch

Been a couple months since I've played anything. I also created a Twitter Circle that are the only people to see my tweets, for 1) to not spam tons of people who don't GAF about things like day 1 chip counts or hand histories (including people who don't follow me, but someone they know does, etc.) and 2) to ensure people at my table aren't seeing the tweets.

Fire me a DM here or there and I can add you.

I generally like the guy I see at the table.  I can't stop watching his YT table despite fully knowing it's click bait and soap opera drama.  My animus towards him stems solely from the fact that I can't quit watching.

New poker room in Vegas:

After 11 years, poker will soon be back on the menu at the Tropicana Las Vegas. Trop owner Bally’s has signed a deal with Washington state’s Maverick Gaming to operate a poker room. The hope is it will attract customers by offering low stakes and the “lowest rakes in town,” according to an announcement by Maverick.

The Maverick Gaming Poker Room will open in June, with more details of the grand opening expected to be announced soon, according to Jeremy Weinstein, CMO for Maverick.

The deal will include the expansion of Bally’s Big Bet Poker live stream and TV show to the Tropicana. The show will feature poker player and Maverick CEO Eric Persson and other big names in poker playing for high stakes in a dedicated broadcast studio located adjacent to the poker room.
The Trop’s poker room closed in September 2012 and was replaced by rows of bankable slot machines.

‘Black Friday’ Poker Room

The Tropicana hasn’t had a poker room since 2012. Its last was short-lived and ill-fated. With former WSOP champion Jamie Gold as its ambassador, it had the misfortune to open on April 15, 2011, a day known to poker players as “Black Friday.”

It was the day that the US Department of Justice indicted the three largest online poker sites serving US players for violating the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), effectively shutting down the online poker market.

In the short term, the cessation of online poker might have seemed like a good thing for a live poker room. But in reality, the online game feeds the live game by attracting more players and swelling tournament pools through online satellites.

Maverick CEO

Maverick currently owns four commercial casinos in Nevada and three in Colorado. The company began buying poker rooms in Washington state like they were going out of fashion after the Supreme Court defanged The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA), the federal prohibition on sports betting.

Persson was banking on the state legalizing commercial sports betting to licensed gaming venues. But lawmakers had different ideas. When they passed a tribal-only bill in 2020, Persson sued the state and federal governments, arguing that the monopoly was unconstitutional.
When a judge ruled against him in February, Persson indicated he would fight the issue to the US Supreme Court.

The Tropicana is owned by the real estate investment trust Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc, while Bally’s is the casino operator. The two companies recently signed a deal with MLB’s Oakland A’s to build a $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat baseball stadium on nine acres of land near the Tropicana, which will be demolished.

Anyone playing WSOP now? I saw the $300 gladiators event going on, figured some surly (99%) folk would be playing. I'm gonna play the colossus at the end of the month, the online $500 deep stack, and then after winning either/both of those I'll play the main. ;)

I am trying to schedule right now. I want to do June 23-30 so I can do the Millionaire Maker and maybe the $600 Deepstack, but might have to do June 26-July 3. If I did that it would be the $600 Deepstack and the Colossus. I am at the mercy of a crappy flight schedule out of Grand Junction, CO.

Headed to Vegas.  Which room has the fish?

If you're not playing any WSoP events, I'd strongly suggest getting in one of their daily tourneys.  Outside of that, Wynn has the best room since its impossible to get a seat at ARIA these days.  MGM tends to run soft, but on the downside you're at MGM.

I'm staying at teh WYnn as a matter of fact.  It's a trip with friends so I can't do any WSOP shit unfortunately.  I live out in LA.  This needs to be more of a thing.

Wynn's poker room is possibly the best run anywhere and there are plenty of whales any time of day.  Obviously, there are also a shit ton of pros, but that's just the game.

They, too, are running a poker series right now thats worth considering.  As a bonus, during the daytime hours you get to watch scantily clad ladies come and go from their pool club right next to where they host tournaments.

Wondering if anybody has an opinion on mystery bounty tourneys. I am booked for June 27-July 3 in Vegas and thinking about the Golden Nugget $1100 Mystery Bounty $1 mill. gtd. Too much $$ goes to bounties in these things?

It’s fun.  Just a flatter prize-pool structure which a you have full approval to bitch about if you finish top 10… otherwise you probably greatly benefited from that structure!

1/2 game, 8-handed.

Hero opens A of hearts K of diamonds on the button, BB calls, flop is A-Q-J, Ace of clubs and two spades. BB checks, Hero bets half pot, BB calls and shows A of diamonds to the whole table.

Turn is the last A in the deck, the A of spades. You're both 200+ big blinds deep. Check or bet?

What do we think of BB?  Most semi competent players in BB's shoes would raise pre vs a button opener with AT-AK.  If we can eliminate those from his range, then we know a) we have him absolutely crushed and b) he's going to have a very hard time folding.

I'm guessing hero opened to $10 and BB called, so $20 pot, pre-flop.  Then Hero cbet $10 and got called on flop, so now $40 pot.  On the turn, I want to bet before any scare cards come on the river that would give him an easier fold.  Feels like we need to act like we're on a draw, but in that case we'd almost always check through this turn since he showed the table the Ace.  Super tough decision here.  I think we're now in a polarized situation where we're either getting a fold if we bet or we have someone willing to make a big mistake.  There may not be much middle ground.  Let's target those capable of making the big mistake and throw out $50.
