88th Texas Legislature

Gonna be a fun year.  I'm sure that the Texas Freedom Caucus or whatever the fuck that group that Briscoe is a part of, will try to get internet porn blocked without you presenting a government ID to whatever porn site you are wanting to look at, like Louisiana has done.

Las Vegas Sands (and a few hundred registered lobbyists in the state) is making a massive advertising push to get casinos in Texas, helped by some Texas legislators who want to get it and sports gambling on the ballot for Texans to vote on.  Abbott says he's open to limited legalized gambling, Dan Patrick says it won't happen on his watch (fuck him for deciding what everybody else does).

Good rundown of everything else

Paxton wants more power to go after "election crimes" - https://www.texastribune.org/2023/01/12/ken-paxton-texas-legislature-election-crime-bills/

LGBTQ stuff - expect the Republicans to try and suppress any kids who have different views on their identities - https://www.texastribune.org/2023/01/12/texas-house-2023-bills-lgbtq-chapter-313-gambling/

Quorum breakers can be fined daily and be expelled from the Chamber - https://www.texastribune.org/2023/01/11/texas-house-rules-democratic-chairs/

Just a few of the things we have to look forward to.

GOP cutting funding to any school with diversity education.

Also any school that teaches about why Texas actually seceded and fought against the United States of America.

I wonder how long before they ban the text of this in any Texas schoolbooks or books allowed in any school libraries.

Yeah, this year is shaping up to be a special kind of shitshow already.  Wish I was joking about the legislature trying to restrict internet porn like Louisiana, but it's only a matter of time.  And they have made it publicly known they are going after trans kids, gay kids, etc. because that's the thing our education system needs - the legislature going after kids.

There’s going to be plenty to hate coming out of the capitol and there always is with this band of misfits calling the shots.

why does Bathroom Dan get to single handedly kill everything fun and get re-elected all the time? With Dan Patrick, Texans will never get any form of legalized gambling, marijuana, and he will spend nearly all of his time on shit like going after transgenders, internet porn blockages, and delta 8 or 9 hemp crackdowns.

So what're you guys gonna do with your $170?  I'm thinking of putting in a pool.

Lulz I’m definitely picturing this being the ultimate result of the ptax relief. The surplus doesn’t do shit for stemming the ptax tide besides a one yr windfall really.

got a chuckle out of the state univ’s telling the leg they demand a billion or two of the surplus so they could reduce tuition costs…. No wait, they just said freeze tuition rates forever… No wait, freeze them for two years.

this would be a HUGE mess in the larger counties, which are a huge target for texas maga gqp

So the end result of this is that the cost of elections doubles?

Or are they envisioning that a bunch of people wouldn't bother to get the second ballot?  Because as the party of the poorly educated, I have bad news for how that's going to work out for Republicans.

Loved one of the bigger gop house rep faces talking in a news sit down about tightening abortion laws then the very next topic talking up legalizing gambling since we are such a strong liberty state and letting citizens decide for themselves. Strong

I don't know the woman, but she sounds quite fetching.

Also, my hand measures nearly 11" from pinky to thumb (the extended version like they do at the NBA draft), so I tend to make dicks look small.  Mostly, my own.  Mostly.

Is there a bill filed already for the Plan-B/Morning After Pill?  Genuinely inquiring.

Also, if they go after contraception, are condoms next?  How else will Briscoe Cain take it in the ass?  I absolutely 100% know for a fact that a friend of mine and him used to fuck, at the Driskill Hotel.  Often.  NTTAWWT.

I’ll try to find the article/interview again, but I don’t know that legislation has been filed yet, just that they were targeting the “abortion pills anybody can get” and that Roe v Wade being overturned was “just the start”.  And keep in mind some of these nutters consider The Pill contraception to be almost the same as Plan-B/Morning After, because it stops what God intended or whatever nonsense they are pushing.

Turning Texans against Texans and encouraging them to spy on one another, I'm sure that's why Wild Bill Hickok, Davy Jones, and Daniel Boone died at the Alamo when the Germans attacked them.

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2023/1/9/23540562/abortion-pills-medication-dobbs-roe-mifepristone

Quote

One proposal, which is expected to be introduced this week in Texas, would expand the ability of private citizens to bring civil lawsuits against anyone thought to have terminated a pregnancy illegally with abortion pills. This would build on a six-week abortion ban that took effect in Texas in 2021, which included the novel citizen enforcement mechanism.

John Seago, president of Texas Right to Life, told Vox they’re looking to “utilize those civil liability tools” for abortion before six weeks, and his group is working to identify examples of people who might be distributing abortion pills illegally for local prosecutors to then charge.

Quote

Seago said Texas lawmakers are also going to explore ways to hold groups with ties to abortion pill distributors “financially and criminally accountable.” Though some medication abortionproviders are outside Texas and outside the United States, Seago said elected officials are looking to target entities with connections to the providers that might have subsidiaries in Texas. “If there is still an affiliation or cooperation of other entities with that pharmacy or physician dispensing the pills, then legislators can look at our law and spread out the accountability,” he said.

One targeted at Austin, but maybe overshadows by the DAs going after people, trying to prevent out-of-state travel for abortions, and blocking websites.

Because Texas believes in small government.

A Republican Takes Aim at Austin’s Logistical Support for Abortion

Representative Candy Noble wants to ensure that governmental entities (i.e., the Capital City) can’t fund travel, childcare, or other support for abortion-seekers.

Quote

The bill: House Bill 61. Filed by: Candy Noble, Republican, District 89 (Lucas, northeast of Dallas)

What it would do: The bill would prohibit a governmental entity from entering into a “taxpayer resource transaction” or spending money to provide any person with logistical support for abortion care. As defined by the legislation, logistical support includes travel to or from an abortion provider, lodging, food, childcare, counseling, and “any other service that facilitates the provision of an abortion.” The bill allows Attorney General Ken Paxton to file suit and recover attorney’s fees if a city violates the potential law.

Quote

The Republican lawmaker’s bill is the latest in a long line of not-so-subtle attacks on the city of Austin’s support for abortion care. A 2019 law (Senate Bill 22) passed by the Legislature directly barred local governments from contracting with abortion providers and affiliates, a thinly veiled shot at Austin for its $1-a-year, decades-long lease agreement with an East Austin Planned Parenthood clinic that offered only preventative health services, such as birth control and cancer screenings. (State and federal taxpayer dollars could not flow toward abortion procedures directly, despite what Republican lawmakers have said. The one local hospital district in Texas that did use local tax dollars for abortion services ceased that care after a 2011 state law—which, again, intentionally targeted Travis County, home of Austin—threatened to withhold state money from it.)

Quote

Noble’s attempt to pass this bill last session never got to a vote, while the bill’s Senate counterpart, filed by Donna Campbell, a Republican from New Braunfels, sailed through the upper chamber. The bill could feasibly pass this session, but it may end up sidelined and overshadowed by the more pressing anti-abortion priorities discussed among conservative lawmakers, including expanding the power of local DAs to prosecute, adding barriers to out-of-state travel for abortion-seekers, and blocking access to medication abortion websites, among other potential proposals.

considering most of the jackholes in charge won their elections easily/overwhelmingly, it would seem the vast majority of Texans are just fine being snitches and hating their different-from-them neighbors.

Texas has the leadership it's populace wants and deserves.

it's very sad and hard to come to terms with, i know 💔😒

You're friends with somebody who willingly had sex with Briscoe Cain? Might be time to evaluate some relationships.

Probably.  This guy was bi for many, many years.  He eventually just got tired of dating and wanted companionship, so he settled down and got married to a lovely woman.  No kids.  They're both in their 50's now.  He's a centre-left guy, not overly liberal.  But he has to tow a very centrist line due to his dayjob in politics (you probably wouldn't recognize his name, but you definitely know his work/reporting).

Few years back, we're sitting around the Driskill Bar during Texas TribFest.  About 6 of us, a full smattering of the political spectrum.  Briscoe had been/was about to speak IIRC.  Couple people in my group knew him so he comes over and sits with us for a couple rounds and makes this awkward joke to my friend about how this is bringing back old memories for them.  Got weird for a second, but the guy's whole vibe is just weird so it was hard to tell the difference.  Anyway, Cain leaves and my buddy is laughing about how awkward that was.  Another friend asks me if I knew what was going on, said no.  He explains to me they used to "meet up" together there.  And the formerly bi guy nods and smiles like 'Yeah dude, totally happened.  Don't judge me.  We both needed the indiscretion and the discretion."  No judgement except for Cain's non-stop crusade to make gay people commit suicide.

Really funny thing is if you've seen Cain in person, you know he's tiny.  Little pudgy but short with a slight frame.  And my buddy is a big cat.  About 6'3", barrel chested with very broad shoulders.  Everytime I think of him, I think of Rafi on "The League" when he whispers to Brian about being cellmates, "You should know (hushes tone)...I'm not gentle..."
