50 Texas Sheriffs Attend “Constitutional Sheriff” Training

Some 50 Texas sheriffs have attended “Constitutional Sheriff”’ training and had it count as required continuing law enforcement training. As best I can tell, the ideology is similar to sovereign citizens. Sheriffs are the “highest true legs authority” and should not enforce federal laws they don’t want to enforce.

Of course Ken Paxton is involved.

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, the key organization fueling the movement, led around a dozen training sessions in Texas in 2020 and 2021. A February 2021 session in The Woodlands drew at least 27 sheriffs or deputies. At an October 2021 session in Mesquite, the keynote speaker was Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and attendees included state Sen. Bob Hall, R-Edgewood, and former state Sen. Don Huffines, who unsuccessfully challenged Gov. Greg Abbott in the Republican primary for governor. Other attendees have included justices of the peace, police captains and members of the Texas Farm Bureau.

I remember in high school in podunk county Texas, Sheriff has a bumper sticker on the cruiser that said "My Gun Protects Your Rights"

Always struck me as odd, even back then.

Nothing new. Nobody batted an eye when a Texas sheriff chased a car across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama all the way to Atlanta in 1977.

One dude lost his hat...

Glad this has its own thread.  Quoting again my favorite bit from the article about the guy who's pushing this narrative:

Quote

Mack asserts that elected sheriffs are accountable only to their voters, not judges or legislators, even when other branches of government make or interpet the law. In effect, sheriffs can nullify a law by refusing to enforce it. “The federal government, the White House, or Congress do not hire us, they cannot fire us, and they cannot tell us what to do,” he wrote in his 2009 book “The County Sheriff: America’s Last Hope.”

Yep. There's a Cedar Park Constable's SUV I've noticed over the years. On the back window in 6" white vinyl lettering is "In GOD We Trust." Pretty up front about what you can expect should you have an interaction with him.

Can your defense be “Jesus took the wheel?”

Nothing but grief for this in the replies. Don’t know if that account usually is interactive, but not a peep from it to defend the tweet.

and as an alum of gms and ghs, 25 years ago, couldn’t be less surprised.

I saw it first on Jake Kemp of The Ticket’s feed. He caught some shit but did not back down.

Grapevine PD posted a sort of apology on their FB page. They got slammed there too.

To be clear, there is a difference between a actual Christian and an American Christian. An actual Christian spends their time feeding the poor and helping the sick. An American Christian plays with guns, is fascist, and hates the poor/sick

Until actual Christians start speaking out against the vocal majority, ACAB

Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Days after Illinois passed a law banning assault-style weapons and large-capacity magazines, dozens of county sheriffs say they won't enforce the measure, claiming it is unconstitutional.

Displeasure appears strongest around the Chicago area, where top law enforcement officials in McHenry, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, La Salle, Grundy, and Kankakee counties have publicly stated they will not enforce the new legislation, WLS-TV reported.

There is always a push-pull between the Rule of Law and sincere civil disobedience when the law promotes evil and injustice like segregation.   How you justify your actions usually depends upon how you feel the issue.  “Law Enforcement” by its very definition should not be the entity refusing to follow the law.

Certainly not at the cop level, even the "senior cop" level.

The executive branch is charged with executing the law, and I think some discretion is permissible there, particularly when the legislative branch is sclerotic, and possibly mentally retarded.
