Texas Men's Tennis 2023

Texas is pre-season ranked #8 in the nation and picked to finish 2nd in the Big12 behind TCU.

This might be the most experienced team we've ever had. On our roster we have

3 fifth year players led by Cleeve Harper
4 fourth year players led by Eliot Spizzirri
1 third year player (Micah Braswell)
1 second year player (Pierre-Yves Bailly)
1 first year player (Lucas Brown)

Last year's team was riddled with lingering injuries. If this team can stay healthy, they have a chance to do some damage in the league and in the NCAA tournament.

First match for Texas is @ #12 Florida tomorrow morning. Florida is the opposite of our team in experience, as they have 5 freshmen, 1 sophomore, and only 3 upper classmen. Their top player from last year, Ben Shelton, turned pro after last season. Their new comer to look out for is freshman Jonah Braswell, who is brother of current Texas tennis player Micah Braswell. Would be an entertaining match to see those two play against each other.

Ranked No. 13 in singles, Woldeab helped the Longhorns defeat No. 13 Florida, 5-2, to open dual match play. Woldeab, a 2022 doubles All-American with Eliot Spizzirri, began the day by earning a doubles point with new partner Pierre-Yves Bailly as they downed the 43rd-ranked duo of Jonah Braswell and Lukas Greif, 6-1, to be the first team off the court. The junior then picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Greif at No. 4 singles to once again be the first off the court and give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead.

Woldeab garnered a Big 12 weekly award in 2022 and now has earned two in his career.

"Bailly, a 17-year-old from Belgium, who, like Geller, made two junior slam finals to finish No. 1, hasn't ruled out joining his brother Pierre-Yves, who was the 2022 Big 12 Freshman of the Year at Texas. "

This article makes it sound like Gilles Bailly is either coming to Texas or going pro. (For those who don't know, the author has been a reporter in junior tennis world for decades.)

We have another tough test against #24  USC tomorrow at the indoor UT courts. Their top 3 singles lines are better on paper than our top 3 singles lines, but Texas has the edge lines 4-6.  Doubles point will be key to get.

Also of note, USC's assistant coach is Texas-Ex Liz Begley who played for Texas from 2010-2014. I think the indoor courts opened just after she graduated, so I'm sure she'll enjoy touring the facility.

TCU won 4-0. Spizzirri and McDonald were the only guys that won a set today. The last 2 long 4-3 matches Texas had really did them in

We overachieved to reach the finals.

No shame in losing to #3 after taking out #1 and #4

A great showing

I assume the college athletic scholarship is not a thing in Europe.  And that there aren’t enough good US players to go around.

Correct. Generally speaking, you’ll see the smaller D1 programs load up on foreign players since the top American prospects will sign with a power program. A middling foreign tennis player >> middling US tennis player, and that’s just due to the pool size. Tennis is a global sport that is popular just about everywhere so that’s why college tennis recruiting is global.

Texas wins a nail biter against NCST 4-3. We lost doubles, and singles matches from Spizzirri and Woldeab. Very fortunate to pull out the W

Kind of buried the lead there that we fell behind 3-1 (not just "lost doubles and Spizzirri and Woldeab single matche") and rallied to win 4-3.  NCST is ranked #20.  Nailbiter indeed.
