PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — A California lawmaker introduced a bill Thursday that would require schools that play major college sports to pay some athletes as much as $25,000 annually, along with covering the cost of six-year guaranteed athletic scholarships and post-college medical expenses.

I think the number is a fair one at $25K.  The issue on this will be those programs like UCLA who have $63MM in debt.  Yes, they are about to be bailed out by the B1G, but the financial issues still stand for other schools.  Football alone will be North of 2MM not to mention the other title 9 sports that will absolutely require athlete payments as well.  What will happen to sports like Mens and Womens golf that are already losers in the AD?  Will they just cancel the programs?

Coog High spent almost $47 million in academic side money on athletics in 2021 and has been doing similar for a number of years.....the vast majority of that is NOT the student approved athletics fee it is simply money over and above that fee that the administration chooses to subsidize athletics with

with 38,500 undergrads that is about $1,200 per undergrad student per year so about $4,800 over a 4 year degree or $6,000 if it takes 5 years

I believe only undergrads pay their athletics fee (generally how it is at most places), but the other transfers comes on the backs of all students so you are still looking at over $1,000 a year of $4,000 to $5,000 in the time to get a degree

that is a shit load of money to put on the backs of students and all the more so if student loans are involved

sure one could argue that in the Big 12 they will reduce that, but if they reduce that in any meaningful amount they simply fall further behind other P5 programs in total athletics revenue.....Texas Tech with $90 million in revenue only had $40,000 in total subsidies in that same year and they have been around the $2 million or so mark for a number of years (and reducing it)....Tech was #45 in total revenues (not including private schools and there will be a number above that)

coog High had $66 million in revenues, but that is including that $47 million subsidy so if Coog High cut their subsidy in half with Big 12 money they would still be below Tech and that would still be $24 million or so in subsidies

north Texas state had a total budget of just over $40 million with $30 million off the backs of students so about $850 or so per student and they are going to get next to no meaningful bump from the AAC move

at some point when students wake the fuck up they are going to demand this shit stops at a ton of universities across the USA and a lot of these athlete students and the dumb fucks that think the vast majority have talent that demands a wage close to the annual income in the USA plus housing, food, and other "goodies" are going to find most of these athlete students are not getting shit because athletics programs have been cut to zero

with 350 to 450 athlete students at most universities you are looking at about $10 million just in pay and then add in another year of tuition and room and board on top of that and you are dropping another $250 to $350 a year into regular students

this shit is about to get really stupid

Cali of course has zero clue what will happen with this as far as collateral damage. You’ll have big rev sports, neutral, and losers. Losers turn into club sports. Neutrals barely hang on. Guaranteed 6 year scholarships. Lifetime health care. That will reduce high school offers and shift more to get transfers of proven players.

Pre nil I believed players should be paid a bit. Believed in loosening rules as I don’t care if a booster bought mama a double wide. Never believed in 6 year schollys. Should be annual renewals. Believe athletes should be able to hire an agent and stay eligible until they sign a contract. Get hurt school insurance should take care of it. But if you play nine snaps a season. Nope.

They’re trying to say if you have any coaches making over 500k a year and cut sports your AD gets suspended for 3 years.

also they’re asking for a 50% cut of the money from profitable sports be set aside, but that money usually subsidizes all the loser sports. Gonna be interesting.

My guess is there are going to be some shocked season ticket holders when they get the new prices for Big 12 tickets. My dad has season tickets for both football and basketball, and they don't come close to my season tickets for football alone. That is likely to change, which should help a little. It will also help that teams playing closer to your stadium will mean more visiting fans will show up. They will also get a huge jump in revenue sharing from the AAC to the Big 12, and their basketball program is currently in the same tier as the top Big 12 schools.

As far as this bill goes, what do they mean by "some" players, and I imagine the Title IX bitches will want their fair share as well.

Very insightful. I was surprised to learn that during a ten year span that began when aggy left the B12, the university loaned aggy athletics millions of dollars. So, even some who love to brag about how rich they are, can at various times be in need of a cash infusion. In that regard, UH is not alone.

Aggy still hasn’t paid that money back to their academic side.

I think this is more along the lines of what most people were thinking of when we were all [pre-NIL] like...."College athletes deserve to be compensated".

Well, okay at least that's what I was thinking anyhow.

“Student athletes can’t even afford to take a date out for pizza and a movie.”

I heard that more than anything. Of course, and like so many other things, nobody really thought that’s where it would end.

It's almost as if 99% of student athletes aren't worth paying and should shut the fuck up and take their free education.

Which is why I don't understand schools like SHSU jumping to D1. There is no way D1 athletics is that much of a benefit.

there was actually a vocal group of their fans that were not happy about the move up

there opinion was they can either compete for championships in D1-AA as they have recently or move up to D1-A and become fodder for the SEC SEC SEC and Big 12 and others with 5 home game some years and maybe 6 other years

they do not have the enrollment, alumni base, alumni donor support, endowment, or facilities to really ever be very competitive and most likely never will and the CUSA is not just a hodge podge of teams that are left over in CUSA or that have randomly moved up when they probably should not have

My cousin is a grad and small time booster. He is under some crazy impression that this is going to be a financial boon. It's hopeless trying to reason with him.

Just wait til the players unionize.

Hoo boy.

The only players that could unionize would be the athletes in the revenue generating sports which would, ironically create more inequality in college athlete pay.
