Yea he’s not staying there I’d say.  Just hope he makes a roster at this point.

Except their OL is still dogshit.

This was the old Cowboys model in the 2000s. Just worry about the skill positions and piece together a shit OL and pray it works (it never did). They didn't get serious about OL until drafting Tyron in 2011 and then they built arguably the best OL in football. Although they kind of went overboard and used a ton of draft capital and a lot of the salary cap and it only netted them one great year together (2016). After that, it fell apart year by year. You don't need all these 1st round picks on the OL. Get 2 really good guys to anchor it and fill around it.

The new coach wants someone he knows who knows his offense to start the season while Will Lewis learns the gig. Minshew has won games in the league. Sam needs to have a strong ota season and camp. He puts up good tape he’ll either stick at 3 or get another gig. Sam may never be a starter but if he can prove to be a great backup that is a very good gig making lots of money for a long time. He’ll be fine.

I guess the Texans are definitely taking a QB at 2. Trading back, signing Minshew instead of Keenum, and taking Hooker in the second or third round is what a smart team would do.

It could be the “system” colluding against him, but all the NFL Network and ESPN types have shared many similar anecdotes about Jackson and his mom being woefully inexperienced in contracts, not for football but also endorsements. When the Ravens offered him a reasonable extension with a lot of guaranteed money, his mom asked questions about various clauses in the contract. When they told her it was standard NFL contract language, she took offense that they were implying her son was a “standard” rather than exceptional player. That blew up the negotiations as much as them insisting on getting more guaranteed money per year than Watson got from the Browns.

If the Ravens won’t give him $50m/year guaranteed, why does expect another team to give him that plus lose two first round picks in the trade?

He’s a dumbass. Too bad he’s not listening to someone with wisdom.

Deshaun Watson didn’t “reset the market.” The Browns paid over market for him to convince him to come to that hell hole instead of Atlanta. Lamar expects to get paid more total and more guaranteed than Watson and Mahomes when so much of his game is based on his legs which will likely start to slow or get dinged up more often during his next contract period.

Expanding on my previous post, the NFL Network Radio breakdown went into all the shoe, soda, trading card, etc. deals he’s missed out on because his mom is obsessed with him being the highest paid at everything. He ends up with very few endorsement contracts and has left millions or tens of millions on the table.

Lamar Jackson has requested a trade. No idea who is in the market to give up two first round picks and pay the salary he wants.

All that draft treasure and guaranteed money for a running QB who has hurt legs and hasn’t finished the past two seasons and is so limited in his game that you have to reconstruct your offense. And you have to deal with his crazy mother and his entourage of “counselors”.

Pretty much. Still hanging onto that MVP season which was 2019. A season where they got embarrassed as the 1 seed against the Titans at home.  He is no longer that player. He hasn't finished the last 2 seasons due to injury. Running QBs don't last long. There is no collusion against him. Teams are nervous to get him a huge extension. And a non Ravens team has to give up 2 first rounders in the process. People need to stop saying the Browns set the market. No they didn't. It was the Browns being the Browns. They were desperate for a QB after the Baker experiment went south so they went all in on Deshaun and just guaranteed his whole deal. No team is following suit on this.

And I see comparisons of "you think Cincy would do this to Burrow?" You mean the guy who has been to back to back AFC championship and a Super Bowl mixed in. Stays healthy and is a damn good QB? Of course not. Lamar is none of that. Mainly because he can't stay on the field to finish a season. Availability is a big thing. Especially for the most important position on the field.

Burrow’s contract will be interesting because it’s the Bengals. Will Mike Brown cough up the bucks, given his cheapness. I think he’ll make him a big money deal but will not fully guarantee it. Say it’s $250/5 years. All of that guarantee has to go to escrow.

There is a salary cap.  What money is he saving by not paying the QB.

Assuming they spend the same amount on the roster (you aren’t required to spend the full cap, only above a certain floor), he’s not saving anything. However, guaranteed money must be put in escrow up front and QBs are getting significantly more guaranteed money these days, so some teams may not have an extra $250M in the bank to put in escrow. Also there’s the philosophical decision of spreading your salary cap out more evenly over 22 players vs. tying up 40% of your cap on one QB who could suck or get hurt.

Bengals going to run into the same situation every team with a rookie deal QB. They did take advantage and had success under Burrow under his rookie deal. What's it going to be like once he has a massive deal? But you have to pay him. You need a QB to win in this league and the idea of getting a lesser skilled one to be able to spread the money out rarely works. A really good QB can hide the deficiencies.

I really wish the league would do something about the QB salary and how much it counts towards the cap. They want to promote these guys as the face of the league and you really need one to win but teams are handcuffed so much once they get off their rookie deals. I guess one reason they won't is the NFL doesn't want super teams or stacked rosters.

But with these QB salaries keep going up, not sure where it stops. When a guy like Daniel Jones can get $40 million a year, that tells you all you need to know.

That guaranteed money has to be escrowed rule is so conflicting. The owners don’t like to be forced to tie up such a significant amount of cash flow but it also gives a built in excuse to try to limit guarantees. The players like it in that it ensures that they will get paid what is owed. Yet if it didn’t exist, a larger  portion of their salaries would probably be guaranteed. Quite the conundrum.

There is zero chance the NFL expands fully guaranteed contracts beyond the occasional goofball deal like Cousins or Watson. Injury, declining returns, and the proven path to playoffs of a cheaper QB and more better other players. If Watson gets a catastrophic injury the Browns are fucked cap wise.

The Niners will continue this process with Purdy and seek other cheap QBs that can play. It allows them to have so many more weapons.

Niners only played Purdy because Trey Lance got hurt and so did Jimmy G. They spent a lot of capital on both, be it money for Jimmy G and the draft picks in the trade to get Lance. Purdy happened to SF like Dak happened to Dallas. Both were not expected to play at all those years. If SF feels their system in place with Shannahan means more than the talent of their QB, then we'll see. I can't imagine Lance is not going to be written off that quickly seeing as what they spent to get him. I'm skeptical on how much success Purdy has long term. Nothing stands out much when you watch him. It's like you said, they have so many weapons for him and a great defense that really controlled those games so he wasn't needed to do a ton. Also had one of the best ground games in the league.

I'd just rather have a great QB who can make lesser areas of your team than counting on putting the perfect offense and defense together year after year in a league with such high turnover due to short contracts and the violence of the game either forcing players to retire early or they just are never the same.
