My Bariatric Surgery Journey

248.6.
86,000 steps in the last week. 16,500 yesterday my high this year.
41 miles.
240 minutes in the zone. All rolling 7 day average highs by a lot.

Only 1.5 pounds in the last week (still working off a 15,000 calorie per week plus deficit, maybe more) so the expected loss would be 4 pounds. Makes me believe I can still sort of keep up losing 10+ pounds a month- even as I get smaller, if I keep up and expand the exercise.
that would put realistic aggressive goal of 199 for 9/1/23

Wu, my man.  I believe you to be an inspiration for both sides of the weight loss regime.  Keep calm and keep on kicking ass.

Thanks man.
Wife feels fully recovered now if you know what I mean. Definitely incredibly noticeable with us collectively down close to 100 pounds from our fattest.
She’s super pissy right now. Bummed out. Only lost 1 pound in the last week even though she’s on purely liquid diet. I tried to talk her into reading this thread and she was like- not a chance.
probably for the best. It completely sure I’d love the idea of her reading every single post of mine on here. Probably wouldn’t mind but maybe?  She might accuse me of oversharing.

We are pretty open about everything so I don’t think she’d be surprised by anything I say here. If anything it would be irritation that I shared something she thought I ought not have. But, for example she knows I live journaled the RV trip. She thought it was weird I’d want to do that (or this) but she didn’t care.

I'm killing it. I've got 17 days in a row with all my steps (10k plus) all my mileage (5M plus) and all my calorie burn (3620). My averages are way over that. I'm also averaging over 30 minutes a day in the workout/fat burning zone.  247.0 today.  Exactly 75.2 pounds from my fattest.

Wife I can tell looks slimmer. She's up 1 pound in the last week and so pissed off. I was reading her posts from the same time that I was posting when I was pissed off. I know a lot of people thought I was being dramatic or silly but my point was that I was going to post what I was feeling and do it honestly to be a help to someone else. Kind of funny the help ended up being for her.

slightly over 1/2 way to my goal weight of 175. Maybe I get there maybe not- but 200 is happening for sure and sooner rather than later.

245.0. Half way to another milestone (I’m a simpleton that gets excited by round numbers- sue me), so that’s exciting.
Wife yesterday was up 0.4 pounds from where she was 8 days ago and is pissed. Especially since she’s been on liquid diet that whole time. Like- beside herself.
when that was happening with me at the same time she was pretty dismissive.
she didn’t fully appreciate that when I pointed it out. Weird.
but- on a serious level I feel really bad for her right now because it’s incredibly disheartening and frustrating.  But, she looks way better so it will ultimately be ok, even if it does suck right now.

244.4.
This is where it gets irritating.
I was gone for the weekend. I woke up every day and hit the treadmill at 5:45 or 6. I averaged 16,000 steps. I did my body weight exercises. I burned 13,000 calories according to my fit bit. I ate something like 3,000 calories because I’d didn’t have my shit to do my protein milk that I usually use 2X a day as a supplement to get to 1500 or thereabouts. So, like a 10,000 calories deficit. Bell, I even did something approaching running for a little while (first time in 20 years) and over a 4 day period instead of down 4 pounds like the math would say it’s 0.6 pounds.

I’m not going nuts about it or anything just a little irritated  seems like I’m at 2 pounds a week average but the calorie math would indicate I should be at 4 (this is over the last month).

4 a week means I get to the biggest goal of my life in 11 weeks (sometime in July). 2 pounds a week means sometime around OU weekend. I’m seriously upping my activity level. It’s taking longer than it feels like it should based upon “the math”.

Behold- the weekly numbers.  I set another personal high again- with 95k steps. I'm going for 105k this week. My workout/burn zone is up to 45 or so minute average and I'm even running (not much but a very little bit) some.  I think I might get a gym membership this summer and start lifting actual weights, but not completely 100% sure on that.  The weight loss is still a bit of a slog compared to my calories in/calories burned math- but it's steadily coming off seemingly 0.2-0.4 pounds a day (2.5 a week or so), even though I'd prefer 4 based upon diet, activity level and math.  The size 38 shorts I intentionally bought that were too tight for me 3 weeks ago (I got them on but it took the jaws of life to get me in them) fell off me (right out of the drier when they are their smallest) when I didn't have a belt on yesterday. I'm down to 2 pair of slacks and gym shorts that fit me is all. I just can't go buy more though b/c I won't have them for more than a month.  But definitely need some new swim trunks as my other ones I had to hold onto with one hand while going in the pool with my son this weekend.
Wife is eating solid food (soft) and much happier. She lost 3 pounds over the last 3 days so she's literally back to where she started about 11 days ago. She's not thrilled with that but I told her this should be a good lose for her this week.  She's much better now that she can eat real food like split pea soup or the like.  She needs to get moving more as you can see with me doubling her up right now. She said she will this week.  I get it- that liquid diet is a beat down and you feel pissed off and like crap. She's not competitive nor was she ever in sports so she's not as good at putting her head down come what may.

It's funny how on Thursday you're trying to remind your wife that it's a marathon and not a sprint, but four days later you're in the exact same position she was in. And I mean that literally and not dismissively. It's funny and hard and a kick to the dick when you put all the work in and don't get the results you want. I remember last time I dieted busting my ass on like week three - running 5 miles a day three days a week and hitting the gym hard another two to three, eating all the right shit, watching my booze intake and my sugars, etc, and being pissed off I only lost half a pound over the previous week.

Keep on keepin' on y'all!

Oh no doubt.  And this thing is literally a journal about my journey so it's really authentic and feeling based, so that hopefully if someone else wants to go through it then it will be there and helpful for them.

But every time you hit the scale and end up losing less than you think you "deserve" it's frustrating. I don't want to make it seem like I'm in despair or anything because I'm really not- more a sense of "huh- why you got to be so stubborn- we allegedly did better than that".

Some guys make bathing suits with belt loops or built in draw string belts.

I have the built in draw string belts. It wasn't even close to be capable of staying up.

I was simply saying that if you replace it with something like that, you'll probably get more usage out of it before you have to toss it.

239.4!
Bam.
did 16,200 Thursday’s

did 17,000 yesterday with 131 minutes in the zone. barely ate. Just wasn’t particularly hungry. Think I was working too hard to be hungry. Starving this morning. Time to go make my self a breakfast burrito and eat half of it.
Life still seams so weird.  I wonder if I will ever get  used to it.

Pretty well.
she’s one week in. Today was her first day off clear proteins and onto milky shake type proteins. 2 weeks on that, then 2 weeks on soft food and then she’s good to eat normal (new normal). She’s still got gas pains (they pump your stomach full of CO2 so that they have room to get into your stomach and it sticks with you for a while and is pretty miserable) but other than that she seems to be doing pretty well.

Those gas pains are no joke. I had them after my colon resection last year and they were almost as painful as the diverticulitis attack itself.

Awesome work Wulaw!

Best Fitbit to date week, even with Sunday being my worst day in a month (sit in church, cook in kitchen, sit and do family dinner for mothers day, play cards with the olds, decide- fuck it- I aint doing 7K steps from 7:00 pm on during a Sunday evening). So, I'm reliable enough that I get my steps in except for Sundays that are also holidays- that's not bad I guess.  Did 21,000 steps and over 10 miles yesterday as make up/punishment. The streak did end at 27 days though. Not bad.

I'm two days in to trying to take of 10 lbs and I'm a complete bitch. 10,000 steps and my back is killing me. I don't know how you do it.

2 different ways:

1) I try to walk 5-10 minutes an hour every hour. That's 400-800 steps.
2) I try to go at least 45 minutes with a walk and body weight exercizes mixed in.  So, walk a lap (equivalent I don't actually do it on a track) and 10 squats. Walk another lap and 10 more squats, then 10 more, then 3 sets of 10 lunges, then 3 sets of 30 wall push ups, then a couple planks and side planks and 1 legged bridge lifts at the end.  So, that gets my body weight stuff in and my heartrate going doing it during the walk.

Mixed in a little light jogging/running.  Very little for now.

Probably 3 months away from lifting things heavier than my body.

whats the surly consensus on ozempic

I think it’s awesome while you take it, super expensive and you immediately put the weight back on when you stop taking it I think.
my sense is if you want to lose 10 or 20 pounds for a wedding or graduation or special event it’s probably amazing.
Not a doctor. Not a nuanced or well researched take- talked to a couple people and read a couple articles.

238.2. Back to rolling along. I’d eaten some stuff that was borderline bad (not a ton- but some desert for Mother’s Day) and even though it was 1500 calories during that day swelled up and gained 2 pounds. Dumped all that after getting back on track and now down 1 pound over the past 4 or 5 days total.
If I can keep this up that makes 8/24 the day I see a 1 on the scale. Will be interesting to see when that day is. I’m pretty comfortable I used the right word in saying when not if.

I mean, you know this, but your body weight can fluctuate 5, maybe even ten pounds, right? Ive been at a plateau for three weeks now, with my weight ranging about 4 pounds at any given time. If it’s at the higher end one day, I don’t like it but I know I’m not suddenly getting fatter. Same with the low end and getting skinnier.

Yeah I know that.  But lower on the scale is fun and higher on the scale sucks. I am down to only weighing myself twice a week and I'm certainly not obsessing over it, but it still feels good to see lower rather than bad.

3 week plateau is teh suck. You still on program?

I’m down to weighing twice a week. I’m not obsessing about it. For the most part it’s going really well.  The. You have days like today where it really sucks.
240.0

8 days ago I weighed 239.6. I’m up 1/2 a pound.
yesterday I ate a burger patty with cheese and avacado on it- no bun or other condiments, chicken salad (no bread), 2 pieces of cake (extremely small- it was my daughters birthday and 2 different we’re there and made) and a 4 OZ ribeye. Also 15 cool ranch Doritos. Measured out. I’m guessing  1500 calories certainly no more than 2000. I did 4300 calories burned per my fit bit. I walked 3 miles in the morning and then jogged/walked 1.5 after church. I did my body weight stuff. Some of it twice.
the last week I’ve averaged 3919 calories burned. And here I sit 1/2 a pound heavier.
I know all about water retention.
I know all the other stuff, but it still galls, even if this is temporary and will go away.
I think I ran about 300 yards yesterday. That was my furthest in forever (since my 20’s). I’m trying to work up to running to the stop sign that is 7/10 of a mile away. It’s hard to describe how much I hate running.

Another personal record week in the books. Sunday I had church and then my daughters birthday party. Was like I'm not getting my steps in. But instead I woke up (no alarm) banged the wife with surprise morning sex and then did 4 miles on the road.  Then, after church before the party I went for said run for another mile.  Here are the numbers:

238.0 🙁

at lewst I’m down from my last official weigh in on Monday at what we that was/ but this is something like 10 days past my mark at 238.4. So, something like 1/2 a pound in 10 days. Not eating much and working a ton still. I know it will happen but the starts and stops are rough. I approach this scientifically as to what I’m eating and want it to be linear but it’s just not.
have to say I’ve been really busy with end of school stuff with kids, wife has been sick and it’s been hard… I was out last night walking with a flash light to get my steps in. Sunday I was on the road at 6:30 before church and it sucks to get up before daylight on a Sunday.
We are going on a cruise starting Saturday and I actually expect it to be easy on there, should have a chance to be pretty active. It will be weird to go on a cruise and not eat excessively, drink too much and smoke a pack a day while gambling.

Thanks man.
Hasn’t been fun.  We went to a Mexican food restaurant the other day, spent $80 and I ate queso flameado with a spoon and we brought 3/4 of it home. Was as unfun as I expected and I used to love Mexican food. No smoking.  K dipping. No booze. No fried food. Working hard.
But, I feel really good and all my health problems went away so glad I did it. It’s a serious and life long commitment.

I mean you are still very early in this journey. I would think that all the brain rewiring, body changes, and lifestyle resets have a pretty significant runway.

That being said, it sounds like it was a no brainer decision for you and the fam. Rooting for you big time, and again I admire your balls for putting this all here on Surly for us degenerates to see.

It’s helpful to me to keep tabs, be honest about my feelings and hopefully e courage someone else trying to do something like this.

Good for you, man. I had some bad levels on my blood test 3-4 years ago, which motivated me to lose a ton of weight, which I did. Like 40 lbs. Went back, and took my levels and shit that had been an issue for awhile (cholesterol, lipids) were all perfect or within range. First time in a decade, which felt great. What did not feel great was when I went back to the doctor for my physical last week, and got my levels. Since the last test, I have gained 10 lbs. Just 10 lbs. I'm 6'3, so 10 pounds doesn't even make me LOOK that different. I'm still eating healthy, I'm still exercising regularly. But you know what, my body said "go fuck yourself." All my levels were back to previous shit areas, and on top of that, now I apparently have pre-diabetic levels of blood sugar. Which is fucking terrific to hear for a guy who's sugar intake is damn near as low as humanly fucking possible. It's a shitty feeling to feel like you have ZERO margin for error and your body is just going to go to shit if you don't stay at 205 lbs or less.

So when your health is improving, that's a huge thing and you should be thrilled. And yes, it's apparently a fucking lifelong commitment for all of us, not just folks like you who have gone through serious surgery to try and improve your health. But outside of physical changes, don't take the internal healthy positives for granted, which it sounds like you haven't, but that is a good lesson for all of us.

That sucks man- sorry to hear it for you. Obviously you are healthy weight, healthy size and doing what you are supposed to do- sucks you drew the genetic short straw as regards to that kind of shit.  My understanding is that cholesterol is probably more about who your parents are than what you eat (though both matter).

I would have to imagine that it takes a good bit of work to stay in the 100's at 6'3" and getting older.  Getting older sucks man.

I've been in the 180s before, and the 190s. And I've got to tell you I look absurdly skinny to the point of "this can't be healthy" at those weights.
